this past sunday why well to speak out against the keystone x.l. pipeline. in what many are calling the largest climate change protest in u.s. history activists marched around to us the white house and demanded the president move forward on his clean energy proposals advocates say the pipeline would cause irreparable damage to the environment due to the canadian tar sands extraction process it was only a month ago that president obama promised to be a leader in clean energy he reiterated that same promise in front of congress just six days ago at the state of the union address so will president obama hold true to his word well for more i'm joined by independent journalist well potter thank you for joining me so let's talk about let's talk about these tar sands why is this pipeline so controversial enough to be able to generate the biggest protests that we've seen in washington d.c. with climate change with the controversy with the keystone pipeline really reflects a coming together of a lot of issues that have been really central to the environmental movemen

will make its decision on the keystone. it will be 90-120 days after the draft eis is issued by the state department. it was not issued today. you can make some calculations on timing. i've heard first quarter, second, third, fourth. i know they work very hard on getting the cold relations -- the coal regulations. it will in essence close down every plant in canada. most coal plants will be goine ne in canada. i think they're working very hard on it. 2011, the state department reports on ghg's relative to american ghg's. 17%.d it at the latest numbers have it % on en 9 $ and 11 $ o average, lower the california thermal. comparable to venezuelan crude it is replacing. it was 10 to 1 20 years ago. the new technology is half a barrel to 1. ethanol is 3 barrels to 1 and that's a very important distinction between oil sands, which is half a barrel of water to 1 with the new technology. >> what's happening with our discussion t

the keystone is back on the table. the $7 billion project would build a 2,000 mile pipeline connecting canada's oil sands to refineries in texas and the gulf of mexico delivering more than 700,000 barrels of heavy crude oil into the country every day. president obama and the state department are expected to make a decision by the end of march, but it won't be easy. last weekend tens of thousands of environmentalists took to the streets of washington in what's being billed as the largest climate rally in u.s. history. opponents of the pipeline say that the extraction of the crude oil from the canadian tar sands is exponentially harmful to the environment. climate activist bill mcgibbon has said it's akin to lighting a carbon bomb, causing irrepairable harm to the environment. he emphasized in both his nagral and state of the union speempz this year wroosh proponents of the pipeline argue it will reduce our dependency on foreign oil and trans-canada, the energy company with the bid to build the pipelines, says it will cr

so i stand here saying that the keystone x.l. pipeline is a perfect example of the obama administration's pattern of delaying good projects by requiring excessive red tape. so i come here with you, the senator from north dakota and the senator from alaska, and look to you, the senator from north dakota, and thank you for your leadership, for your determination forks your, for yr fortitude, for you fighting to make sure that we as a country continue on our drive for american energy security. and that's exactly what we're going to have with this proposal. and i call on the administration today, the president as well as the new secretary of state, to approve the keystone x.l. pipeline, to allow that energy, which is either coming here to the united states or going to china or elsewhere, to approve it to come to the united states, to help our production, to help our consumers, to help our jobs in this country. those are the things that are important as we try to focus on energy security for our nation, economic growth for our nation,

we have 69% of americans support the keystone pipeline.art because they may not have clear information about what the consequences are of building it. >> going back to the point about the president and the political position he's in right now. one thing that makes it different from the '64 civil rights act of johnson, it's a moral dilemma. part of the problem is the notion of scarcity. we are in a frame of scarcity. we have so many people who need jobs. we are in part where our economy is not recovered from a tremendous recession. where the president rightly used, as an opportunity to try to rebuild the economy, invest in renewable energy, which is incredibly important. now, trying to figure out how in the context of incredible, real pain that real people are feeling on the job market, most of how people are seeing keystone is in this frame of jobs. jobs, jobs, jobs. >> you end up with 69% of the people supporting. >> the part of the conversation that's not happening to your point about information is if we invest, it's 1.9 million jobs co
