the keystone pipeline might as well be a line in the sand. environmentalists and lawmakers. >> teh keystone xl pipline is a 2000 mile funnel. if the $5.3 billion pipeline is approved, what does that mean for jobs? it will create 42,000 jobs during the two-year building phase. almost 4000 are pipeline construction jobs. the pipeline only expected to create 35 permanent jobs. a recent report forecasts a thin profit for oil companies. the recent shale boom created a glut of oil in the united states, dragging down prices. if oil can make it to the gulf coast through the pipeline, it competes against the mexican crude benchmark projected at $89 per barrel. if it stays in canada, it is $69, $20 difference. not so fast. the $20 premium does not necessarily mean big profits. canada's heavy crude is some of the most expensive to produce. it needs to fetch at least $65 per barrel to break even. add in transport costs. the profit margin drops to just $5.50 per barrel in the mexican market in 2015. if the pipeline does not get approved, who are the winne

the trans-canada keystone pipeline southern leg began today.s a 48 a-mile pipeline. this is really key, because you have four refineries here, big refineries, exxon, motifa, and motal and have a wlero. >>> this is really significant. that oil will be able to reach about 25% of the nation's rye fining capacity in the gulf coast. that's when you include the refineries that are nearby lake charles and also in new orleans. moving this light sweet crude in this way benefits the refiners, saves them roughly $15 per barrel to do it via pipe. this raises the question, of course, what about the northern leg of keystone. it could bring another 830,000 barrels of heavier crude from alberta, canada to the gulf cost. the cost saving there about $20 to $25, so you can see why the refiners are guest behind it. the canadians are growing somewhat impatient as they await a decision, recently say that president obama has punted on this sure, and secretary of state john kerry says the u.s. will not be sbushd making a final decision. but thens of thousands of jobs

. >> there's a lot of talk about the keystone pipeline. there is another pipeline that is important to the industry and that is the alaska pipeline. given the declining throughput of the pipeline, what is your vision of its future as it is related to the american energy policy? >> alaska is key in a vast energy resource for us that has gone in many ways underutilized for many years. we need to continue to focus on alaska. the role of federal and state government is key in alaska. the vast majority of the state is controlled by, primarily, the federal government as well of the state. when we look at the transatlantic pipeline, it is a resource that is now underutilized because we are not producing enough to keep it at full capacity. we should look to those existing infrastructures to expand and achieve our potential but we should also look at the new infrastructure debate. as i mentioned earlier, in your packet today we shared the new report that shows we can create close to one million new jobs by building the pipeline networks not only al
