now we're talking about burj khalifa. you're really talking about at best a few hundred yards away from where this fire is still blazing, if you will, even though officials say it's 90% contained. >> there's a pretty good chance that most of the fireworks display, if it does happen in about 25 minutes will probably be obscured by the smoke. you're talking there about that very close proximity. the conversation that is playing out in many ways on social media is the conversation that you've been having throughout the past hour. and that's one of image. the emirates is a country that wants to show the world opulence. when you go to dubai, you think opulence. you think the world's biggest mall, the world's tallestbl ese building, the world's only seven-star hotel. there is, in fact, a seven-star hotel in dubai. people on social media are wondering if it's appropriate for the fireworks to go ahead in dubai with these incredibly dramatic pictures, and i do want to remind our viewers that these are pictures from earlier. the ho

three different displays from the burj khalifa hotel. this building is really in the shadow of the burj khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper. there are already travel warnings and security warnings about that area. international israeli o.s., travel security agency posted earlier about road closures, increased security in that area. video of people running, one man posted on twitter who was inside the hotel, said, quote, people were crushing each other trying toss ou to get out. the major general said no one was injured. quote, no injuries, thank god it will not affect the celebration, as he went on to say. again, a little -- about an hour from now it will be midnight. we'll see if that, indeed, happens. you're talking about a tremendous amount of smoke from the hotel. as chris brown, firefighter said earlier in the broadcast, he talked about whether there were any toxic materials in that building that were possibly in that smoke. again, tens of thousands of people pack into downtown dubai. a lot of hotels in that area, a lot of resta

next to the burj khalifa. and people were applauding, taking pictures, then as soon as that was over -- actually, you do have to know something is that not all of the burj khalifa downtown fireworks were on. because normally -- and i know because on our tower we also have fireworks. we have on the roof, that's usually lit. but only burj khalifa was actually lit. none of the amar tower or the burj resident tower were lit. so they were definitely more cautious on that. so they didn't take those steps forward for that. but in terms of the movement right now, we've got people evacuating from the town square and now going on to the bridge, but the island is completely empty. as soon as everybody watched the rest of the fireworks which were happening in burj al arabiya and in atlantis, we had a large screen viewing of it and now everybody is leaving. the residents of the burj common area, is empty, everybody has left back to their apartments. >> and you're seeing the address building itself. is the situation there s

but the fireworks, the fireworks display, 1.6 tons at the burj khalifa, went on as scheduled, and it is really remarkable when you look at the contrast. on one hand you have building, you look at the video from earlier, engulfed in flames, and then you see the fireworks going off, and the fact they continued the fireworks, and the amount of people that were in that area, and the overall -- not only the containment effort of the fire but the evacuation effort of that area is just extraordinary when you think about it. and then of course the ongoing security concerns that remain because of this situation. i want to stress, unclear, what exactly caused this, but when it started, it engulfed that building and went up very quick. you can see the celebrations going on right now there in downtown dubai. >> one of the things that may have saved a great many lives is what we have seen in pictures on the internet from eye witnesses who have downloaded from the scene and what one of our guests said she noticed and that is only one side of the building was lit with flames. the other side was not

tens of thousands outside the burj khalifa or underneath the burj khalifa, so close to the address hotel which had gone up in flames, but such an oddly, oddly audience tonight. a very oddly evacuation at the hotel. and people now at five to 1:00 in the morning making their way away from the scene. and really probably fairly low key it has to be said this evening. but the firework display went on. and life does go on in dubai, as you can see. >> and they have just demonstrated that in a very big way. becky anderson, thank you so much. let's continue talking about this extraordinary fire and display of calmness there and order in downtown dubai based on all the information that we've learned from officials thus far. glenn corbet is a fire official. you heard officials believe this fire may have begun on the 20th floor with a curtain of some sort. does that square with you knowing how quickly this fire has burned based on what we've been watching live today for the last two hours? >> well, fredricka, as we know from a lot of previous incidents, the first accounts are very often inaccurate.

the burg khalifa is not far from the address hotel. the smoke billowing up into the sky, the smoke reaching three quarters of the way up the 828 meter high building, the burj khalifa. clearly firefighters struggling to contain the blaze and get the situation under some sort of control. let's listen into an eyewitness i spoke to a few minutes ago, she witnessed the fire from the balcony some 150 meertsdz away. >> we were having a reasonably quiet there, call from the friend, went out onto the balcony, it was seriously going up very fast. i've seen a couple of explosions recently, and -- or a couple of bangs i should say. but yes, it's been on fire probably for a good hour now. pushed everyone away from below the building so it's completely surrounded by fire trucks. the wind has kind of blown -- blown the fire in one direction which has been great so it hasn't actually wrapped around the building. it's been trying to condense it on one side. but i'm looking at it now, and there's still out of the building being attended to,. >> eyewitne
