khan, an engineer from charkh. his brother mohammad razeq was killed during the operation and mohammad khan was determined to get justice for his death. >> on the morning of the operation, mohammad khan said charkh seemed quiet. there were military aircraft flying above at a high altitude, but he said that was normal. mohammad khan said that he and his brother mohammad razeq were out driving when they saw three women crying on the side of the road beside an injured man. khan would later find out that the injured man was a member of the taliban. mohammad razeq got out to see what was going on, then they were suddenly surrounded by afghan special forces. >> the brothers were taken to the house of a local doctor where the soldiers were detaining people. >> mohammad khan was detained in the doctor's compound all day. it wasn't until evening that he was allowed to see his brother. the soldiers had asked the doctor who owned the compound to take a look at mohammad razeq. >> i had tried to reach the doctor who tended to mohammad razeq as he took his last breaths, but he refused to talk to me about what had happened. but his son mansoor, who had also been there that day, came to kabul to mee

khan academy where you are testing a lot of different things. tell me about this. sal: it has always been a dream of mine, even before khan academy existed. wouldn't it be fun to be a mini-dumbledore and experiment with a lot of these ideas? we should have a small lab where we can test some of these ideas. where we can test some of these ideas on what could a classroom be. emily: who are these kids, how many kids? sal: my eldest son is one of the guinea pigs. [laughs] a lot of the kids are khandemy employees' kids. we should live by what we are saying, otherwise we would be hypocrites. so there is that. and we just started, so there are a handful of families letting us experiment on their children. emily: do you think online education is going to replace traditional education or the traditional classroom? ♪ emily: the u.s. spends more than any country in the world on education. $1.3 trillion a year. and yet still, we are 25th in math, 17th in science, 14th in reading. what's wrong? sal: if you went 50 years ago and you said, give me a list of the 10 most innovative companies in the world, maybe 30% would've been american. if you were to do that list now, probably 80% would be american. what i like to think about is how can we bring that spirit of entrepreneurship, that spirit of failure not being stigmatized, how can we bring that to the schools? the transcript of the future doesn't just need to be your gpa and your test scores, it can be a portfolio of creative works, it ca

so there's khan academy, and they've created a partnership with college board. go on khan academy's website and receive free test prep, but, again, it's self-guided test prep. so it's not as though you're gonna have an instructor leading you. you have to go there -- obviously, for highly self-motivated students, which, again, it's a great resource just because, again, there are limited resources now for the new s.a.t. >> and i think some of that is aimed at students who, perhaps, don't have the money to pay for -- families don't have the money to pay for... >> they're trying to marketize, obviously, the test-prep world to make sure that more students have access to it. >> okay. now, the other question that came to mind -- how does a parent and a student decide which of these tests is the best for them, which test, i guess, will play to their strengths? >> of course. of course. >> and i'm thinking -- well, some of that may be guided by the schools you want to apply to, huh? >> not so much. more so the student. all about the student. so, again, the current s.a.t., as i said

khan academy the virtual will be a resource to liberate the physical. a handful of kids. but khan academy, we have over 30 million students using us. we could send them information on how to do similar things in their own classrooms. >> montessori does some of that. you talk about a year-long school. why did you want that to be the curriculum? >> first of all, montessori, in a lot of ways we are exactly montessori. if montessori was around in 2015 we wouou hope she would use some of the same ideas and tools. in terms of year long, i guess the question is why not year long. most of us stopped farming a little while ago and that's why summer vacation existed. and if you put all of these new ideas around mixed age and blended learning, all of those aside, the gap between the u.s. and shanghai test scores can be purely accounted for by time in the classroooo it's really not only -- you have the summer learning loss, which is not only time that you're not learning and you could be but actively forgetting the things that you learned at the end of last year. just summer and also full day, our current school system was designed for one income families where the mom would be at home and the kids would come home. now you have two across the demographics, you have two income earners, so why not go full day, allow the kids to get all the work done during the day and when they go home, the biggest correlate having success is having dinner with your family and sleeping. so create some space for that. >> but you know the counter argument teachers will make. that's the unions and teachers say i can't do that on the salary you pay me. that's the counter argument, right? >> this is something we want to explore because if you look at funding and education, actually very little of it goes to the teacher. here in new york city public schools, they're spending close to $20,000 per student per year. that's about $500,000, 600,000 a classroom. teachers get very little of that. >> they talked about the tech elite's quest to reinvent school in its own image. is that what you're tryinin to do?? >> welel you knowow i d dve a honda so ion't know if i'm a tech elite. >> honda is a good car, sal. >> you are somebody that the tech elite pay attention to. >> it was actually my dream to start a school before khan academy existed. now that we've had this reach we've worked with a bunch of schools. we said let's do it under our offices for real. >> you started khan academy cousin. how old was she? >> 12 at the time. >> unit conversion. >> did you ever think it would go to this? it's amazing what you've done in a short period of time. >> no. >> good answer. >> changing education. suppppter like bill gatete >> love having you here, thanks as always, sal khan. >>> this morning, a cameraman who worked for the federal government at ground zero after up next, "48 hours" on >>> denver law >>> denver law enforcement officialalare in their secd decade fighting to bring back a man living in argentina. he faces a murder charge in the death of his first wife. kurt sonnenfeld worked for fema, videotaping ground zero after 9/11. he's battling extradition with a bizarre claim that the u.s. really wants him back because of what he saw after the attacks. erin moriarty went to buenos aires and here's a preview. >
