kiet, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. governor jerry brown has been working to try and close a $27 billion budget deficit and he is doing that by possibly making huge cuts to hire education. well, now the system is fighting back with what they are branding as a day of class action. this will involve protests at every, single csu campuses. 23 campuses in all we're talking about rallies, teach- ins, demonstrations, all in support of higher education and fairer contracts for university employees. the california faculty association says in recent years student fees have tripled, 3,000 faculty have been laid off and the budget has been cut by $1.5 billion. in fact, campuses like san jose state have cut classes and then taken steps to reduce the number of students doing things like shortening application deadlines. this has resulted in overcrowded classrooms and long waiting lists. the teachers union says this amounts to students paying less and getting -- paying more and then getting less. now, the union has a list of demands

kiet, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those vicious dogs are still on the loose and animal control and san jose police are actively looking for them now here at cataldi park. this is a huge and vast park that measures about 33 acres. so at that hour of the night, no one could hear the woman's cries for help. this happened at about midnight on thursday. dawn wilson was riding her bike with her dog shadow. the husky mix was off leash when two dogs and pit bull and pit bull mix came out of the darkness and attacked him. they went for shadow's throat. the woman tried to stop it but they bit her, too. shadow is about 12 years old. didn't stand a chance. after half hour, he was severely injured and the pit bulls left him for dead. the 66-year-old woman found the phone that she dropped and called for help and shadow was so severely injured he had to be put down. wilson got stitches on her face. this is the third attack in san jose in four months. back in january a 78-year-old man was attacked by several dogs in the blossom hill

kiet, good morning. >>> reporter: good morning., an exact number of 106 police officers have gotten pink slips and that means that there will be fewer detectives to investigate nonviolent and property crimes in the city of san jose. if these police cuts go through, and it looks like they will, then it will be the first time in the city's history that it will happen. now, a total of 600 layoff notices went out yesterday as managers called in employees one by one to tell them the bad news. the notices were sent out with the assumption that all 11 workers' unions will take a 10% paycuts but only four have agreed to do so. this year's $115 million historic deficit is now the tenth year in a row for budget cuts fueled in part by increasing pension costs. this means longer waits for everything from firefighters to applying for city permits. mayor reed said he had little choice but to make the painful cuts. >> i think every department in the city is going to see reduction in people and layoffs most likely. the average citizen will see a r

kiet, good morning. >>> reporter: good morning.fact, an exact number of 106 police officers have gotten pink slips and that means that there will be fewer detectives to investigate nonviolent and property crimes in the city of san jose. if these police cuts go through, and it looks like they will, then it will be the first time in the city's history that it will happen. now, a total of 600 layoff notices went out yesterday as managers called in employees one by one to tell them the bad news. the notices were sent out with the assumption that all 11 workers' unions will take a 10% pay cut. but only four have agreed to do so. this year's $115 million historic deficit is now the tenth year in a row for budget cuts fueled in part by increasing pension costs. this means longer waits for everything from firefighters to applying for city permits. mayor reed said he had little choice but to make the painful cuts. >> i think every department in the city is going to see reduction in people and layoffs most likely. the average citizen will se

kiet, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in fact, southwest says that they already knew about the faa's emergency order to inspect all of these planes. and they say the testing that they did since last friday likely has already satisfied the faa's requirements. nonetheless, the focus remains on these overlapping panels of aluminum riveted together and the focus is now on planes with 30,000 or more take-offs and landings. just so you know, the southwest planes that had the problem last week had a very busy life taking off and landing 39,000 times in just 15 years. that's about twice the average. and so some of these older boeing 737s must undergo electromagnetic testing for hidden metal fatigue. the inspections are because of the five-foot-long hole that opened up on a southwest plane last fright. about 175 aircraft worldwide are involved. 80 are registered in the united states. southwest owns most of them. and southwest planes take off and land more often than other aircraft. reaction from southwest passengers ran the gamut.

kiet do shows us a >>> a woman followed into her own home forced to undress. this afternoon oakland police are investigating the latest in a string of sex crimes near lake merritt. kiet do shows us a enabled on high alert. >> reporter: i bought some mace -- >> i bought some mace, some pepper spray. >> reporter: in the past few months neighbors say the quality of life near lake merritt has gone from bad to worse. >> i am afraid to walk to the store. if i see it getting dark, i'm not going out. >> reporter: the attack happened on the 1400 block of third avenue. a man followed a woman home from the store and came in behind her through the security gate. he forced her to take off her clothes but did not assault her and fled on foot. this is now the second sexual assault to take place here on third avenue. the first one happened back in september. now a disturbing trend is beginning to emerge. this most recent attack now pushes the total number of sexual assaults in the lake merritt area to 5 in the past 7 months. most are within walking distance of each other and

kiet. >> reporter: good afternoon. the protest is just getting under way here at san jose state university. they are expecting about 500 people or so and in looks like they will reach that -- it looks like they will reach that number. they have signs and t-shirts. they are getting ready to make a lot of noise here shortly. it's historic because it's the first time everyone, students, faculty and staff have come together for a common cause. today is a day of class action involving 23 campuses around california. the california faculty association says in recent years tuition is tripled, 3,000 faculty have been laid off and class sizes have gone up. california faces a $27 billion budget deficit but the union says the state's education union is bearing more than its fair share of the pain. >> we are basically pricing more middle class people out of an education undermining the ability of the state to engage in economic recovery. >> reporter: and the cfa has a list of demands. they want to fair contracts, no more job losses

kiet do is at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we are live at the dodge dealership in dublin. this is just off dublin boulevard and 680 southbound in the city of dublin. this involves an alameda county sheriff's deputy. it started at about 1:30 this morning when a female sergeant came across a suspicious person who was walking about the area here. she talked to him. they somehow got into some sort of argument and then a struggle. then she suffered injuries to her head. he used some sort of weapon, not sure exactly what it was. they say it could have been a stick or rock or something like that, of that nature but she suffered injuries and called for help at which point she drew her gun and fired at least one shot and the suspect died on the scene. the deputy has been taken to the hospital. her injuries are unknown at this point. the body is still out here on the property of the dealership and investigators are trying to gather evidence and figure out what happened here. a short time ago, we saw the alameda county sheriff himself sh

kiet do is at stanford where police are still looking for the suspect and joins us live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are live here on the same street where that incident took place here and this is not off the main thoroughfare. this is deep within the campus which is why it is surprising to some people and has shattered a sense of security. this happened saturday night at 9: 30. the intruder climbed into an open window at a ground floor unit at the apartment complex. the victim woke up during the assault and fought off the attacker and the man took off. they don't know how the man got in, left or where he went. but they sent text messages to residents to lock doors and windows. >> of course we're all concerned when something like this happens. but stanford is usually a pretty safe campus and so i'm not overwhelmingly concerned about it. >> any special precautions to take? >> make sure we lock our doors and windows. >> reporter: the suspect is a dark-skinned male, 30 years old, 5'6", bluejeans and dark t- shirt. stanford had 59 burglaries last year and 10

kiet do joins us now from east san jose as the district attorney prepares some new guidelines. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're live here at medics in san jose one of the larger outspoken pot clubs in the city. the d.a. said needed time to review the current law and asked for a temporary halt in the high- profile police raids that had taken down several cannabis clubs. police justified the raids on the basis that all sales were money exchanged for marijuana is for profit and therefore illegal. according to the "san jose mercury news" the d.a.'s office says this argument is flawed saying there is no legal precedent for that rationale. medical marijuana is still illegal under federal law but when california voters legalized it more than 100 pot clubs popped up all over san jose resulting in a cloudy haze of confusion. recently the city council limited the number of clubs to 10. the d.a.'s office plans to work with business owners to get them to comply through written warnings rather than raids. there will be raids in the future but they will try to be i guess nice a

kiet do is in san jose state university this morning and has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: this is taking place on all 23 csu campuses, teachins, demonstrations, rallies, marches in support of higher education and fair contract for university employees. the california teachers association -- or i should say california faculty association said that in recent years student fees have tripled and 3,000 faculty members have been laid off. the budget has been cut by billions. campuses have cut classes and reduced the number of students, doing things like shortening application deadlines resulting in overcrowded classrooms and long waiting lists. the union says this amounts to students paying more and getting less. the union has a list of demands today. bargain fair contracts with faculty and staff, no more job losses, support laws to make the csu more transparent, cut management bloat and stop fee hikes. most of the rallies start at noon today. and the big question is, will it be peaceful? the association says they support civil disobedience but not vio
