here at tabernacle baptist church in killeen, a service will kick off in just a few hours. as for those soldiers who died, sergeant first class samuel ferguson was 39 years old from mullberry florida, active duty for 11 years. the army said he served in kuwait, iraq and afghanistan and he was a hero, dying while blocking a door to protect other soldiers. staff sergeant carlos lureny who served for 20 years and had been hoping to retire at the end of this year. finally, we have sergeant timothy 0eps, 37 years old from effingham, illinois. a combat veteran seeing action in kuwait and iraq. his uncle calls him a very honorable video. the morning here, morgan, is happening around town in central christian church, sixteen flags for the wounded and three crosses for theded adorn the lawn. this is not the first time. in 2009, 13 crosses for people killed by major nadal hassan were also adorning the lawn of this church. this community had just found closure from that attack in august and his son was sentence sentenced to death. now this scene of violence is repeated. >> a reawaken

there is an waco killeen area in central texas. this is one of the largest military installations in the world, the largest in the united states. we do not know how many people have been injured. we don't know if there are any fatalities. we do know there is an active shooter on fort hood. we know there is a shelter in place warning that has actually come across the fort hood website simply saying this is not a test. this is real as they try to stabilize the situation. this is fort hood. in 2009 there was a tragic shooting where 13 people were killed. we are now trying to gather more information. we have former fbi agent who has joined us, manny gomez. the situation is still developing. we don't have a lot of information but we know that people have been called to shelter in place. how do you begin to stabilize the situation like this in such a large area? >> well again it's very difficult. they're going to have to go building to building. they're going to have to--right now you all the intelligence services are trying to gather an

hood actually live in killeen or in the surrounding areas. of the questions i had for you was the transportation aspect, the cars and vehicles that go in and out of that post every day, there are thousands. is it logistically possible to search every vehicle to prevent what happened yesterday, which was a rogue soldier who had an unregistered weapon that he turned on his colleagues? >> well, there are tens of thousands of cars that go through the gates of ft. hood. there's not just the main gate, but there's other gates as well. there's a lot of heavy traffic. i think it would be logistically impossible to do a thorough search of every one of those vehicles. there are 6,000 homes on ft. hood. you would also have to search all of those, and many of those homes they have children who are teenagers in high school. you know, there's no way, i think, that we could ever be 100% certain that no one could have a gun on ft. hood. it just isn't logistically possible. >> mayor corbin, i am very sorry for what your community and for the greater community

indeed, you could consider killeen, texas, part of the ft. hood community, period. there are tens of thousands of vehicles that go in and out of the post every day through check points. if somebody were to suggest that what you really need to do is clamp down on security, you need to be able to physically inspect every vehicle that comes in, that's a physical impossibility without shutting the entire place down. a huge physical security challenge, very difficult to make it completely secure. having said all that, you and i were talking about this before we came on air. a place like ft. hood, texas, like all the other military installations, is almost infinitely more secure than every place outside. i know we focus a lot of attention on this incident. but military posts are by and large very, very safe places to be. when i lived on a military post, nobody locked his door. >> yeah. two things that happened there horrible does not make a trend. i want to play you an exchange between chuck todd and a congressman named roger williams. he's a texas congressman. he had thi

hood in killeen, texas, where this press conference is going to start. you know, we've been racing here from dallas once the news broke with this shooting. but at this time, we expected to hear from the public affairs officials from the post actually making a statement. this will be the first statement that they really made because all of the information that has been coming out at this point, frankly, has been coming from the justice department and other places within the federal government and not so much from ft. hood. and they will be answering reporter questions in terms of what went down here this afternoon and on this very large military installation when these shots rang out and some of the eyewitnesss have been telling local news outlets that they heard roughly 20 shots happened outside of a medical facility this first medical brigade and that has very similar similarities to where this shooting happened in 2009. major nidal hasan opened fire in the processing facility and that, too, was a medical facility where soldiers were either about to dep

our george howell is in killeen, texas, that's the home of ft. hood. barbara, first to you. do we know whether he actually saw combat? he served in iraq for four years. any indication he was injured at the time? >> actually, wolf, he served for four months. let me just correct that. >> four months, you're right. >> yeah, let me clarify that. and that's what's so interesting, four months at the end of 2011 when the u.s. was wrapping up its operations in iraq. and basically he was a truck driver. those are the months in which they would send soldiers in to drive vehicles and equipment out of iraq, essentially drive it back to kuwait. we have every reason to believe that is some of the work he did. no indication that he saw any kind of combat in terms of what other soldiers had been through. no record that he got a purple heart that he was ever wounded. was it traumatic to him? that is something to be determined. he reported at some point that he felt he had traumatic brain injury, and he was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress. no formal diagnosis of that yet. but secret

here in the surrounding community of killeen people are shaken, not just because of what happened on wednesday, but because they're so used to this. this is not something that they want to be used to. in 2009 nadal hasan, the army major, the psychiatrist, who committed the worst mass shooting on an u.s. military installation when he killed 13 people. he was just sentenced to death in august. just as this community was wrapping it's head around closure, getting over that shooting possibly healing from it, this happened, and they're all asking how could this possibly happen again. >> heidi, what about the families of the victims? have they said anything recently? >> we've heard from the families of two soldiers who were killed by lopez. the aunt of carlos hasani said that her nephew served in the military for 20 years and was preparing to retire to his native puerto rico well. and they feel like they're just living in a dream a nightmare at this point. we also heard from the uncle, also we have a statement from the father of the shooter, and said his son was not in his right mind when

hood and he goes into killeen, he gets the rights of a u.s.hase a weapon and have a weapon inside the laws of the state of texas. when he comes on ft. hood, he follows army rules and dod rules that says you cannot have a weapon on that installation. and if you do it has to be registered and if you move it from one place to another you have to have a purpose for doing that. so if you go off ft. hood you have state and federal things that say you can do this. you can own a weapon, buy a weapon, but on ft. hood you can't have it. i think at the end of the day, it's not going to be about the gun necessarily. it's going to be about the soldier and the care that he should have gotten that he wasn't getting, or somebody knew, at the bottom, there's a sergeant that know that there's something wrong with that soldier, that he needed more help. at the bottom, there's a captain that know. i'm sure general milley in his chain of command and we need to give him some space here, will sort that out. but it's about the person in this case and i feel sorry for

that's when lopez was transferred in h el paso to killeen. a neighbor we spoke to in an argument complex where lopez lived described him as a nice person smiling on the day he moved in with his wife and young daughter, but then on wednesday we're told he went home, had lunch with his family, according to another neighbor, and then returned to base and that's when he open fired. now they also are releasing more information about lopez's experience in the military. they call him a very experienced soldier with a long list of commendations and medals. he served for four months in iraq and now they're scrutinizing those months. >> we're digging into his combat experience in iraq. and so far we have not discovered any specific dramatic event, wounds received in action, contact with the enemy or anything else specific that he may have been exposed to while deployed. we're continuing to exam this line of inquiry. secondly, his underlying medical conditions we do not believe are the direct precipitating factor to the incident. >> now there are many q
