less understanding of what kim jong un thinks of donald trump. rt two of the question, how important has moon jae-in been in this? >> first i think that victor is right, from kim's perspective, president trump is still best possible president to make a deal with. and that is because it is highly unlikely that the next u.s. president, republican or democrat, would ever put on the negotiating table big ticket items that the north has always sought such as peace treaty, alliance equity like a peace treaty. from kim's perspective, trump is best u.s. president to make a deal with. this is why since hanoi, even at impasse and north koreans were critical of secretary pompeo and borden, they were careful not to criticize president trump and wants to separate president trump from his advisers. and second point, victor said he expected a big visit to seoul could happen possibly. but one thing we need to look out for, for that to happen, south korea has to be able to give something to north korea. i think one of the scenarios that could come up now, we'll so

president trump made comments earlier about how former president obama wanted to meet with kim jong-un and the president said kim refused the invitation. you are giving us some background on that earlier. let's get back into that now. >> sure, jon. back in the context, president obama had offered to meet with kim there would have been howls from republicans particularly in congress. even the negotiation of the nuclear deal with iran was incredibly negatively received here in washington. president obama spoke with the iranian president by phone, and that was seen as going too far. i'm not sure why president trump feels the need to talk about that in that way and compare what he's doing. you can talk about the policy. but the idea that didn't happen but it would have been completely rejected. jon: what can this president achieve by shaking hand with kim jong-un at the border? >> it's an historic moment to meet. a breaking that mental block, going and reaching out. that is a significant step. this president, he is not always on top of his game when it comes to diplomacy. iran is a juxtapo

president trump said that he received a beautiful letter from kim jong un on his birthday, and that letter prompted president trump to respond in kind, sending hkim jong un a letter. and that letter diplomacy may in fact have set the groundwork for what we're seeing right now. inside north korea, however, it was not portrayed that way. thed letter that was initially sent from the -- from kim jong un to wish president trump a happynt birthday wasn't mention. only thatme was mentioned -- wh was only mentioned was that president trump sent kim jong un a letter. so if you're inside north korea, what you're seeing play out or what you will see play out when we finally get the pictures is north korea that was strong, president trump came in response to north korea's strength. president trump sent kim jong un a letter, and now president trump is coming to visit north korea in the g demilitarized zo. so there is absolutely a propaganda victory that kim jong un is going to paint for himself, and it is quite easy to paint propaganda victories when the onlyt kind of information available in the count

kim jong-un or president trump? >> for kim jong-un, it would be huge.t would be another vindication of the way that he is going. he can play this tomly, he can play it internationally. it is another step in the legitimatization of this north korean leerpd. you can't under-- leader. you can't underestimate how important it is for him. remember, he hasn't had to do anything or give anything up. there would be no conditions put on this third meeting. we've heard mr. trump saying let's not call it a summit, it's more like a handshake. the fact that there's a possibility, that there could be this third meeting and nothing has changed on the ground. there have been no accepts further toward denuclearization. we're in the same position as we were in february after the hanoi summit when the leaders wauklke away without agreement. when north korea or offered to give up the yongbyon facility in return for sanctions relief. that wasn't good enough for washington at the time. mr. trump wanted more. he wanted some of the undisclosed sites as part of the deal. nothin

this is a pr victory for kim jong-un. what they also likely talked about would be kim jong-un's frustration since the failure of the hanoi summit. he went back empty handed and he was embarrassed with the breakdown in talks, that he wasn't able to get any sort of sanctions relief out of those negotiationsth with president trump. so whereit does it all leave us? how does this change things? the skeptics are saying we're effectively back to where we were 15 months ago with the two sides agreeing to talk, saying that working level negotiations will resume. they haven't named their teams yet. they're committedea to seeing i through. there's also, as hans mentioned, this slight shift in the reward system that president trump had alluded to. the fact that there might be partial sanctions relief if the negotiations go well. but fundamentally, things have not changed. north korea has still not agreed to give up its nuclear weapons and therepo aren't many analyst who believe they will. thebe stockpiles effectively ha grown and, of

and what we're likely to see is kim jong-un arriving.e will walk out of a building on the north korean side. he will walk up to that line, the line of demarcation, right in the middle of the dmz. president trump on the other side, on the south korean side of this international buffer zone, president trump will also walk up to that demarcation line. and then the two leaders, if they want to, can shake hands. they can actually reach over that very small wall. they can talk. or which i think is more likely, one or both will cross over onto the other side in that symbolic gesture of stepping over this line of demarcation with president trump going into what is technically north korean territory. and/or kim jong-un stepping over and joining president trump in south korean territory. so a symbolic move. a move of stepping over borders, stepping over a border that has been a conflict zone for decades. >> you know, richard, and those pictures have been taken over the decades of leaders of different countries, of certainly northern and southern k
