the winner has been kim jong un. over. e again, games not far, certainly kim jong un has made main scores. for example, in a meeting with a u.s. president, that's a big deal for the korean leader. not only kim jong un, but his grandfather and father wanted to meet with u.s. presidents, but that never happened until this time. and kim jong un was able to .reate an image of a leader he brought his wife to attend a bank quiet. that is great for north korean leaders. so certainly wanting to promote a certain image to the international community. d he was able to restore a strained relationship with china and south korea. until this in march, kim jong un never visited china or met with president ki. but since march, he met three times. and so a lot of tensions between those in south korea are creating a relationship -- [indiscernible] > and even though we haven't lifted sanctions but to say international sanctions have been quite easy for -- [indiscernible] >> and it is much more difficult for the united states to get cooperatio

the report says that kim jong-un said he never heard the song. it was last year when the president was calling kim jong-un "little rocketman" as he was launching ballistic missiles over japan and other provocations. that apparently is a little joke from the administration to kim jong-un. reporters that were traveling with the secretary asked him if that was true. the secretary would only laugh that one off. it also goes to show how far the personal relationship between the president, what he's been saying about kim jong-un has changed dramatically in the past year. the president continually is bringing up how north korea and kim jong-un have not for months tested nuclear weapons, have no longer fired ballistic missiles. it was on january 1 when kim jong-un announced that his country had completed its nuclear program, it wanted to focus on their commit and that began the outreach to south korea and to the united states. but there is still skepticism as to whether or not this charm offensive is genuine or a long play by kim jong-un to get sanctions

logic behind the trump administration approach, which is to start with opening that channel to kim jong—un is very different to ours, and kimjong—un, in particular, has shown inclination to move in a different direction. like south korea, when you open a channel to the top it gives you a window of opportunity. it looks like it's done upside down, but i actually think this is a good method, given the particularities of the north korean system. we know what the united states wants from this, the so—called denuclearisation of the korean peninsula. what does north korea want from this, just a lifting of sanctions, or do they want more, a full denuclearisation, which is the us leaving the peninsula as well? you know, i think it is important that we think of what the framework is. as you say, especially foramericans, denuclearisation is the be all and end all. i am in south korea, where i have been based for eight years. south koreans want the nuclear weapons given up as well. i would say they have a broaderframework. they are seeing recent developments in terms of a peace process between the tw

mike pompeo did not meet kim jong-un. g-un was traveling in the northeast of the country looking at potato farms and factories. since then, the optics look bad. north koreans were a no-show at a meeting which was supposed to take place yesterday at the demilitarized zone with the americans about the return of the remains of u.s. service members who died in the korean war. this is politically important. it is delicate. donald trump has said that some of the remains have already been brought home from north korea. that is not true. there was a signing between trump and kim jong-un about expediting the return of those remains which is not happening at the moment. that meeting which is supposed to take place yesterday has now been rescheduled for sunday afternoon. on top of all this, we have the u.s. pushing at the united nations security council with new evidence that shows north korea is sanctions busting on the import of petroleum products. saying the north koreans have gone way beyondlocated target f0 barrels. and asking f

how do you think kim jong-un is going to respond to that? north korea has always defined it as global arms control. they'll go to zero when we go to zero, the rest of the nuclear powers. and also they define the korean peninsula as including things as the strategic bombers on guam. what we need to do is get a much fuller agreement such as we had with arms control treaties. we need to get that from pyongyang with robust verification. >> and john bolton seems to think denuclearization could be done in a year. does that seem realistic to you? >> whether it's one year or 15 years as outside experts call for, what we need is to get them to commit to it. the policy would be a se sequential operations of data declaration, interviews with scientists, some inspections, some challenge inspections. and then destruction. we could be doing a number of things simultaneously. even as we're verifying. they can be moving some nuclear weapons to a destruction facility even as we verify how many is actually in the arsenal. >> as somebody who has been in this f
