we're back with mary anastasia o'grady and kim strassel.ow real is the wage gap and what does it cost? >> paul, the problem is that the numbers aren't very clear. we're always told there's a comparison of the dollar versus-- >> that's true in some sense, correct? >> what it doesn't take into account, the number of hours worked. what you end up seeing happens is that a lot of women who get into the work force end up having children and when they have children they want more flexible hours and they want part-time work, because they want to raise, have a hand in raising their children, even if they use some child care and this is what distorts this number from 100 to 77 cents. if you look at women in their 20's who are childless and on a career track, they're earning as much if not more than men. so, it's hard to argue that it's a big conspiracy. >> paul: so the wage gap is real, but the reasons are occupational choices, life style choices, family choices? >> exactly. i mean, you know, we've found a lot with reproductive science, but in the en

we're back with dan henninger and kim strassel and bill also joins the panel. m, what do you make of this liberal angst about the obama campaign, is it warranted? >> well, it comes out of watching the obama campaign the past couple of months which have been all over the place. first they said the economy was getting better then it wasn't as bad as it might have been and went after romney and bain capital and handling of massachusetts and the the war on women and student loans and throwing everything they have to try to get something to stick without much traction. last week, the president came out with an attempt at a reboot. when he laid out the two visions forward, or the terrible one that belongs to romney. and this interestingly has begun to calm some nerves out there among the democratic base and among the political community. because in part, they realize that this may be the best opportunity he has. if he can't talk about his record and the economy, but he can try to make this a referendum on mitt romney. >> bill, is this pivot, likely to work? what's the

joining the panel, deputy editor dan henninger, and mary o'grady and kim strassel. and the big speech on the economy, was this a policy reset? >> yeah, i think call it obama campaign 8.0 or 9.0. a lot of concerns among democrats that this campaign is faltering and runnihither, a dither, they've gone after mitt romney on bain and the massachusetts record and saying that the economy is getting better and saying that it could have been worse, this was an attempt to reset and the argument is now as you've heard, there is a choice and implicit in this is the president's argument, he decided he was going to argue that everything that's wrong in the economy today is the-- the bush policies and republican philosophy and make the case that mitt romney if he were elected would take us back to that point. so it's yet another attack on mitt romney, the president hopes will be more positive. >> it may have been a reset, but can he just change course and repudiate three years of policy and change direction? >> in theory he certainly could, but he won't. what democrats are saying

columnist kim strassel. dan, if the law is upheld, obviously, the status quo p prevails and we'll fight it out in the election. the interesting thing, politically and legally and everything, if some of the law is overturned, let's assume that part of the law, the mandate, and maybe some of the other regulations that go with it are overturned. how is the white house likely to respond to that. >> if that happens, the first things they need to do is attack the supreme court as they did the-- >> really, make that the central issue of the campaign? >> a political response for starters and then say it threatenings to turn health care back to the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies, that's always part of the democratic riff. thirdly, the president will say he intends to work if elected to preserve the best parts and need to work with congress, need a congress that works with him and mention the middle class as being the victims this have decision because he's running on being the protector of the m

author of the new biography "barack obama: the story" david maraniss is here, kim strassel and formernessee, harold ford jr. mark halperin, what struck me about this week is that the whole campaign was really on display. thursday in ohio, competing visions about the economy. who sparks recovery. who creates job and all the rest. friday targeting the most important electoral group out there, that's the latino vote, the president with his decision. of course david plouffe says nothing to do with politics, of course. how do you size it up this week? >> david plouffe said two things that i think are definitely true that we all need to keep in mind as we strap in here for the home stretch. one is no single group is going to decide this. yes the hispanic vote is very important but there are lots of other groups that are important. and the second thing is that the election is going to be really close. everybody in both parties believe that. i think right now you can list advantages the president has, advantages governor romney has. i think what this week sees is the one big advantage governo
