kimberly? >> reporter: diane, while it's quiet now, we're hearing that crews made a lot of progress today assessing the damage and working on cleanup. >> we're looking at broken docks, sunken boats, flotation loose around the harbor. >> reporter: it shows the devastation left behind by a tsunami that barreled 5,000 miles across the ocean before slamming into the california coast. >> the harbor has been here for almost 50 years. we have employees and we have tenants who have been here almost that long. and it's really been a tragedy for them to see this beloved center really of the community, to take such a hit. >> reporter: at least 100 boats are damaged, 18 completely submerged. four were swept out to sea. crews are working to get the sunken vessels out of the water and to mitigate fuel spills. so far the coast guard has only spotted one and taken care of it. they're trying to get the harbor safe enough to get the live-aboards, for those who call their boats home, back into their homes. >> we'

kimberly tere is in santa cruz where the harbor remains closed tonight. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, you can see cleanup is slowly winding down for the day here. we are told that they are only going to work until it gets dark here, and it's getting dark pretty quickly. it is estimated there be $17 million in damages here, and that does not account for the boats that sank or are damaged as a result of those ocean swells. santa cruz harbor is shut down to the public, not expected to reopen until at least monday to give officials to assess the damage. and also get a handle on cleanup. >> we don't know the extent of damage that occurred. we do know that we completely lost half of one of our docks known as u dock. and our hearts go out to the owners of those boats that were tied onto that dock. >> reporter: 18 boats sank, 50 boats are damaged, 4 boats have been lost at sea. an environmental assessment is still being done here. there is oil that can be seen on the water at the north end of this harbor. booms have been put down there. i spoke to officials who tell me so

kimberly tere is in san jose with that story for us. kimberly. >> reporter: diane, as you can imagine, a lot of anxiety in one san jose home tonight as they await any word on their loved ones. you just heard george say it, communications are difficult in japan. it's difficult getting any word on loved ones. megan walsh is using the internet right now any way she can to get information about her sister, cannon. the 25-year-old arrived in japan the day before the earthquake and tsunami struck. she taught english in a port village for two years but just moved back to california maybe six months ago. over the summer she was back in japan to attend graduation for some of her students. >> a visited her in 2009 and met a lot of the people that have lost their homes and stuff, so it's difficult not only not knowing where she is but just knowing how concerned she is for the community that she was a part of. >> reporter: the last contact she made was with friends in japan. she sent a text message about an hour before the earthquake struck. her fa

. >> reporter: kimberly bell is bonds' former mistress, at least one of them. she talked with bonds about steroids use and she saw the changes including testicles getting smaller. it could prove to be an embarrassing witness and she noticed a drop-off in his sexual performance and giants clubhouse manager talking about how bonds needed a larger baseball cap. following last week's testimony, lear bowers strid the side effects. take a look at the list of these side effects introduced into court. notable items pertinent to today's testimony, smaller testicles and enlargement of extremities and increased aggressiveness and enlarged breasts. >> i wish i could say more about the case. again, from the beginning, we've tried not to comment on what takes place inside the court. >> reporter: back to the testimony. former mistress, bonds' legal team is on record the only accurate measurement can be taken with an instrument known as an orcidometer. another mistress, a model that lived in new york also expected to testify later this week with similar testimony. >> eric: in

kimberly tere is there with the very latest. >> reporter: marla, san jose police had to go door to door north and northwest of here to let residents know of that shelter in place order, which as you mentioned has since been lifted. it was an ammonia leak earlier today that prompted the order in the first place. and also a quick response from san jose fire just after 11:00 this morning. fire officials say the leak inside the treatment plant is now well under control. 250 gallons of liquid amoney yo, though, leaked out of its tank into a secondary tank today, where it has been contained. according to the santa clara valley water district the plant has not been in operation since early this month because of some construction. but a worker doing routine checks fond the leak and alerted authorities. >> ammonia leak itself, its first exposure will be an inhalation exposure. keep in mind that this type of ammonia that is here is a 19% ammonia, and it's really no different than the ammonia that you might have in your home. >> reporter: again, to be clear that ammonia leak has been contained. of

kimberly? >> not only was it his homecoming today, it was also his birthday. joe byrnes says he's grateful to be home and for all the attention. but he was very clear about one thing, and that his heart is still with his unit in afghanistan. amidst the roar of motorcycles, joe byrnes got a welcome home he says he'll never forget. >> it feels good. i'm glad to be home. glad to be with my family. you guys are awesome. you guys are really nice to do this for me. >> reporter: he was injured just a month and a half into his deployment in afghanistan. >> just hit an ied, in a mission out there. just driving down the road. >> reporter: the explosion from the roadside bomb shattered five bones in his heel and caused injuries to his leg. next week congresswoman jackie spear will give byrnes the high honor of reading his name into the congressional record. 20-year-old byrnes was the youngest corpsman in his deployment and credited with spending his own money to treat his fellow marines sick with the flu. >> you just have to do what you have to do to take care of your gu

he was in the courtroom when kimberly bell told the jury she witnessed changes in bonds, changes that medical experts have testified are consistent with steroid abuse. bell testified that from 1999 to 2000, bonds developed acne on his shoulders. she observed changes in the shape and size of his testicles and that he experienced sexual impotence. she also said bonds became increasingly aggressive and almost violent request her. she said he admitted to her he used steroids saying "he didn't shoot it up every day like bodybuilders that it wasn't something he did all the time but that other baseball players did it." but on cross-examination, bonds' defense attorneys tried to impeach her credibility. bonds' attorney asked bell about the 20 media interviews she had done in the last decade about her relationship with bonds. bonds' attorney says sarcastically to bell, quote, you've had a tremendous amount of practice in telling this information to an audience." before bell took the stand, the jury heard briefly from long-time giants equipment manager mike murphy. he testified that bonds' hat

live in san jose, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. >>> let's get right to nick o'kelley. what are we seeing right now? >> just plain nasty out there. we've had the wind and we've had the heavy rain. first doppler radar, you can see there's a whole lot of rain moving in. very heavy rainfall in east san jose, tracking up the 880 and 608 corridor. there's also some indication on the doppler radar that a few of these cells are rotating. we don't have anyornadic activity at all, but these cells are definitely packing a punch. and the wind is the other part of that story. gusts right now across the bay area. gusts to 39 miles per hour. just in the last 45 minutes at oakland. 37-mile-per-hour winds at hayward. and 37-mile-per-hour winds at di sane.os j now, this system has really wound up here, jtos in the last six hours. that's good news and it's bad news. first, the bad news. the winds are going to be very strong here over the next several hours. high wind warnings in the east gust as , winds cld high as 60 miles per hour. wind advisory baywide for winds gusting up to 50 miles

kimberly tere is at one of the locations where the work is going on. >> reporter: hello, diane. the objective here is to provide proof that pg&e's gas pipelines are as safe as the company claims they are. that's why all of this work is being done. extensive search for all documents related to the pipeline system, with some papers said to be dated as far back as the 1920s. the proof comes from the utility commission, which wants detailed characteristics of the pipelines running throughout northern and central california. the regulatory agency issued the demand after pg&e's records on a pipeline that exploded last september were found to be inaccurate. that explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes in san bruno. there are about 300 full-time pg&e workers going through the boxes here at the cow palace. employees are reportedly working around the clock to meet a deadline of march 15th. if the company does not meet that deadline, the state could force pg&e to cut pressure on hundreds of miles of natural gas pipeline by 20%. the state could also order testing which could be

but first, continuing the cross- examination of kimberly bell. barry bonds' ex-girlfriend spent most of yesterday on the witness stand in bonds' perjury trial. she told the jury that in 2002, late in her nine-year relationship with bonds, she noticed a big lump on his left elbow. she said bonds told her his steroid use caused his muscles and tendons to grow faster than his joint could handle. bell also describes physical changes common to steroid use, his sexual organs changed shape, he became impotent and grew his shoe and hat size. she said he threatened to cut off her head and throw it in a ditch and cut out the breast implants he paid for. the defense attorneys said she had an agenda because he left her. he says sensational testimony does not equal guilt. >> if i was the defense, that's one of the things i would be arguing to the jury. if this is the best they have, then maybe their case isn't as strong as they believe. >> reporter: okay. we could see the following prosecution witnesses today. barry sample, direct of quest diagnostics laborat

simon. >> reporter: elizabeth, kimberly bell is easily the most anticipated witness in the trial and her testimony did not disappoint. there were tears, death threats, sexual infidelity and even a mention of richard gere. the witness with the most salacious details took the stand, kim bell. for the prosecution, one person who could testify to the effects steroids allegedly had on barry bonds. for the defense, a jilted mistress who is out to embarrass her former lover. she testified to the physical changes she said she saw in bonds in 1999 and 2000. specifically, that the shape, size of his testicles were smaller, unusual, different shape, he had trouble maintaining an erection. to bonds' emotional changes, the supposed 'roid rage, she said, bonds threatened to cut my head off and leave me in a ditch. and another threat, to cut out my breast implants because he paid for them. bonds' attorney attempted to show bell had an agenda to embarrass bonds for leaving her. the lawyer got her to admit that she saw bonds as her richard gere in reference to her favorite movie, an officer and a gen

nbc bay area's kimberly tere is in santa cruz where the harbor sustained considerable damage yesterday>> reporter: you can see the cleanup going on right now behind me. people here tell me that it will continue for the next couple of hours until it gets dark here. this harbor is shut down and will not reopen for at least a few more days as officials continue to assess the damage and also clean up the mess left behind by those large waves. officials estimate damage here at more than $17 million. that does not include the boats that were damaged or destroyed. ten docks were damaged here and half of what is called the u-dock was completely destroyed. all told, 18 boats sank, 50 boats are damaged and 4 boats have been lost at sea as a result of the ocean surge from that tsunami that hit yesterday morning. now, the port director of the santa cruz harbor says right now their focus is on securing the area for tenants who need to work out of this harbor. >> at this time we're mobilizing structural engineers to look at all of the wharfs and piers throughout the harbor to make sure our businesse

live in san bruno, kimberly ferry, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. >>> another attack at a napa hospital, police at napa state hospital have booked a patient into jail on suspicion that he raped someone. the hospital isn't releasing any details about 30-year-old jesus tovar. the alleged victim was an employee. this isn't the first charge at this hospital. donna gross was strangled by a patient. a therapist was also attacked in december. employees have been complaining that they are in dangerous conditions at that state hospital with more than 90% of the patients admitted for criminal acts. >>> a 61-year-old former nurse will serve four days in a county jail for punching a 91-year-old patient in the math. joan rogers claims she was defending herself when the elderly woman became combative. a co-worker heard the patient scream and saw rogers strike her. this week rogers pled no contest to elder abuse. in addition to four years in jail, she received two years of probation. >>> the identification is now positive the body found buried in the backyard of a movado couple's home is that of dale
