let's go to our white house correspondent kimberly halkett kimberly to say the least these comments were a big surprise to a lot of people tell us a little bit about how the route developed after he made the comments. yeah well the white house is certainly pushing back on some of the comments that have ensued following the president's statements and the president for his part has endured backlash and ridicule for his suggestion that it would be possible to inject disinfectant or even ultraviolet rays as a form of curing coronavirus. it was the headline they dominated president donald trump's daily news briefing and most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus both surfaces and in the air promoting a theory that sun heat and humidity appear to shorten the life of the corona virus that research is unconfirmed and it may prove not to be true but that didn't stop president trump broadcasting it to millions and going one step further and then i see the disinfectant but not see that in a minute one minute and is there a way we c

for us so kimberly as we all know this is the administration that long touted jobs jobs jobs how serious a blow is this. this is a you know a serious blow to the u.s. president because this is what he single handedly was hoping to win reelection on and this is a very divided country and even those that didn't like donald trump were potentially considering voting for him again just to keep the job make sure they could keep food on the table but all of that has disappeared not just the jobs created since downturn came to office but even the one since the sort of last recession here in the united states in the late 2000 so this is a real concern for this administration and that's why you see the u.s. president cheerleading so hard to try and get the economy reopened and while he is listening to public health officials for the most part saying that this will be sort of a phased reopening and there will be a social distancing in place in many of the states it's still only going to be about 40 percent of the economy as it was in the united states pre-code a virus and so that's the challenge fo

and so kimberly these numbers put another huge strain on the economy. huge strain on the economy and we hear that the numbers are only going to continue to get worse this is the 3rd consecutive week of massive job losses in the united states but what we're told is that really could be in the 10s of millions even up to 46000000 people when all of these claims are filed the reason that we don't have those numbers now is that the states and employment offices are overwhelmed of people simply can't get in there to file the claims they can't get through on the telephone they can't even seem to file on live so we expect this number to continue to climb and it's across all sectors we're seeing the hospitality industry even surprisingly the health care industry because as the united states pivots towards dealing with coronavirus patients so many other specialties are being put down in terms of priority dental for example is one of the areas where now we see these workers filing unemployment claims so again this is historic in terms of the numbers but sadly they

could be well our white house correspondent kimberly halkett joins us live now from washington kimberly let's start with the memo now from one of trump's top aides actually what can you tell us is in and crucially when was it sent. well what makes the significant is the point you just made the fact that this is from someone really essentially in the president's inner circle peter navarro is one of his trusted advisors on the issues of trade and what we know about these memos is there were not one but 2 the 1st one sent in january the 2nd one sent in february and they issued dire warnings to the president that many are wondering why they weren't acted on more quickly the 1st was a warning in late january that corona virus could kill up to half a 1000000 americans could cost the u.s. economy some $6.00 trillion dollars he later upgraded that concern in terms of the number of american deaths to 2000000 lives potentially so the question becomes now why the president did not act sooner. we do know that he did put in a in january early february a travel ban on the on some travelers from china

halkett kimberly obviously you've been following it as well what stood out for you in many of the points that the president made. well i think there were a number of things that the president touched on that i think are going to continue to be flashpoints for him again it is that issue of this immigration order that he has put in place the accusations that he is doing this to in advance to advance a campaign agenda using the krona virus as an excuse to put in a posin immigration in the united states for 60 days when that he says he'll value it based on economic conditions now this is supposedly only applying to those that are seeking permanent residency a green card it won't apply to temporary workers for example farm workers and health care workers but still this is going to be something that's particularly controversial the other big thing and hear it again is the headline of this refilling of the paycheck protection program that is going to allow for companies to keep business ploys on the payroll essentially this was a program that was intended for small businesses for example 10 emp

white house correspondent kimberly this is like the population of australia all losing their jobs in the space of a month. and it's across all star sectors as well not only is it in some of the service industry like hospitality restaurants hotels we're also seeing it in travel and in construction but we're now also starting to see it in some of those white collar office worker jobs too as this social distancing sets in and doesn't look like it's going to be lifted in a significant way for some time increasingly we're seeing a large number of employers saying we can't hang on that long now that is one of the reasons that many americans are feeling particularly desperate you know as you pointed out all of the job gains since the last major recession in this country have now been wiped out and the prospect peter is expected to get even worse because well the reality is is that it is you know tens of millions of americans lost their job overnight not all americans have been able to get through to the overwhelmed unemployment offices to process their claims so we expect that these numbers

so kimberly we are expecting to hear from the w.h.o. in the next hour they have been fairly restrained during this i guess burgeoning spat but that's not donald trump style is. no and there's no question that the u.s. president has the platform that allows him to make very vocal concerns about the world health organization that he has this is certainly a president this is looking to assign blame you have to remember he is running for reelection he was hoping to run the odds a strong economy and win a 2nd term in the white house now that has crashed as a result of coronavirus and so he's looking to point the fingers but well he does have that very large platform he does pro or joined a growing chorus of not just republican lawmakers who have been pointing the finger at china and also at the world health organization but a growing number of global analysts government officials public health experts who are beginning to question some of the reporting in terms of the numbers that have been coming out particularly from china queues and poten

kimberly staggering figures there from the united states yeah staggering and i know this is just one piece of the pain that's being felt all around the world but it gives us a glimpse the suffering that's going on here in the united states which is still being realized these numbers 6600000 americans filing unemployment claims adds to the numbers that were staggering a week earlier we had 3300000 so we've got about 10000000 americans who filed these claims but keep in mind many are reporting they can't get through on the internet they can't get through on the telephone so we expect these numbers to be climbing up even higher in subsequent weeks in fact we've been hearing in the 10s of millions possibly as high as 46000000 americans lost their job overnight as a result of social distancing and the guidelines to stay at home so not only have we got these historic new unemployment 2 numbers given the fact that we had previously historically low unemployment but we don't expect a lot of these jobs to come back particularly in the hospitality sector where we're told that many restaurants

how kimberly so do we know how much money the trumpet ministration is going to throw the oil industry what shape it's going to take and for how long this bailout may go on for. more left trying to determine if this is an existing program or something new it's really unclear just how much money oil and gas companies could receive when they could receive it which companies could receive it we do know in the past the u.s. president had spoken to both as energy secretary treasury secretary had said that there would be the option of for oil and gas companies to tap into a program called the keris act that was put in place in that rescue package by congress that it was known as sort of phase 3 or this could also be special loans coming through the federal reserve it's really unclear what the president is referring to what is clear is he is trying to calm the very nervous market and kimberly this is basically the ministration trying to meet the liquidity crunch which these companies are facing and try and stop them from closing right. absolutely there is no question that there are many oil a

kimberly so what states are slowly beginning to come back this week is their consent and whether or not this could lead to another outbreak. there's concern and there's confusion you've outlined some of the problems that many are experiencing at 1.90 percent of the united states has some sort of stay at home order right now as these states begin to lift there's public confusion over how that should take a fact what that looks like many people having to make individual decisions given the fact that some of these governors are partially reopening their states but the federal social distancing guidelines are still in place till the end of the month and as you pointed out dr deborah burke's one of the top public health officials on the part of virus task force saying that these social distancing guidelines will be with us in the united states until at least the end of the summer but over the weekend we did see some states lifting when it comes to bowling alleys tattoo parlors hair salons georgia south carolina oklahoma alaska those are some of the states that have those lifting zin then in

kimberly: it is a bleak picture.lieve it is a sliver of the bigger pie in terms of unemployment numbers. the last two weeks more than 10 million people that have claimed unemployment insurance. but those other people who could actually file, they could go online or get into an office or make a call to make that claim. we are hearing that many people were unsuccessful in doing so because there were so many claims. we are hearing that the actual number, when it is all reported and everyone is able to make claims, it will be in the neighborhood of 46 million people, tens of millions of americans who overnights other jobs disappear and we should point out, may not see them return. we are already hearing, for example, in the restaurant industry that wanting for jobs he never coming back. in the travel sector, many people may be unlikely to plan a trip, nervous about coronavirus not completely eradicated around the world. that means those in hospitality and travel are also not going to see their jobs, back. already, the wh
