. >> kimberly richardson has the story from hempstead. >> [ singing ] . >> reporter: clutching their little girl's stuff animal, they try to find strength during what is no doubt their darkest hour. their 12-year-old daughter dejah passed away after being hit with a stray bullet on friday. >> it wasn't a shot because they had said the diagnosis was zero. i was sad that it happened. >> reporter: more tragic, where it happened. dejah was standing in her living room when someone outside fired a shot. the seventh grader was hit in the head. >> things happened the same. something needs to be done about this stuff, you know? >> reporter: in a tremendous show of support, everyone from anitoch baptist church where dejah was a member rallied around the joyners. the reverend said they gathered to raise the level of hope to counteract the fears that exist here. gun violence that snatched away this couple's child. >> they are in deep pain. crying without ceasing. they are broken. >> reporter: sources tell eyewitness news detectives are looking at surveillance video that shows someone getting out

kimberly richardson. >>> seven people were injured when an amtrak train derailed in vermont. the train which was headed to washington dc jumped the tracks after hitting some falling rocks. officials say the rocks fell from a ledge into the path of the train. and they're calling this incident a freak of nature. we're told one of the injuries is considered serious. passengers describe what it felt like when the train went off the tracks. >> we felt something, it just was like a bump. and next thing we new we kind of swerved to the left and swerved to the right and we were all going uh-oh. >> one locomotive and one passenger car flew over an embankment in the derailment. three other cars also left the track but they remained up right. the train was scheduled to make stops in connecticut, pen station, and newark new jersey before heading to washington. tanker truck crashed and spilled diesel fuel in yonkers. parking brake. the truck went rolling and over turned as it hit a building. remarkably, no one was seriously hurt and the building wasn't structurally damaged. >>> to the lat

. >> eyewitness news reporter kimberly richardson has the story. >> reporter: that girl is here in the emergency room with her parents. a bullet grazed her. a 57-year-old man is also here. he was shot this morning, but mike tried to do the right thing but didn't walk away from this. >> i'm not surprised at all that he intervened. he was just that kind of guy. >> reporter: anthony is talking about michael metuziak. his nickname was mush. the 53-year-old was like a second father to him. >> he's just a nice guy. wrong place, wrong time. >> reporter: this was michael's first weeken the job at this metal shop in east williamsburg. just before 8:00 this morning police say several workers from the business, mike was one of them, confronted three men who authorities say had broken into this white van and were in the process of stealing things. heated words were exchanged. there was a chase. that's when the suspects turned and opened fire. >> heard three shots. that's it. >> reporter: michael was hit several times in the chest, killed. he was the unofficial super of this building in green point
