kimberly souters is here with a look back at his life. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. edward moore kennedy, better known as ted or teddy, is survived by his wife, five children, and a sister. he is being remembered for his passion, his kindness and devotion to the cause of universal health care, a cause he chan championed since 1970 and a cause he believes to become a reality this year. he said the pursuit of presidency is not my life, public service is. edward kennedy grew up in the shadow of two brothers who became american icons, but his decades in the u.s. senate established him a a political legend in his own right. >> i'm saying they want to undermine the medicare system and the next is going to be social security. >> reporter: though blessed with fami wealth and fame, he was devoted to helping those less fortunate. massachusetts voters sent him to the senate in 1962. two years after brother john f. kennedy won the white house. >> that the torch has been passed. >> reporter: the heady days of camelot cut short by tragedy. jfk's assassination in 1963. >> on to chi
