nbc bay area's kimberly tere is in oakland to explain for us. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, oakland mayor jean kwan says sense october occupy protesters have cost the city about $5 million. of that 2 million in vandalism alone. in downtown oakland last night, an occupy demonstration turned into a clash with police as officers were arresting dozens of people who they say broke into the ymca. city officials say other protesters broke into city hall, causing major damage to children's art and other displays. two flags were also stolen, one of them reportedly burned by protesters. >> what just fight taking over a ymca? what justifies vandalizing a historic, beloved building that's a symbol of oakland's resilience and history? nothing, i think. nothing does. >> police estimate the crowd to be 500 strong and say they made more than 400 arrests. at least three officers and two protesters were injured. police showed us some of the items one officer alone confiscated from protesters. >> knives, cutting instruments, obviously these are items that can seriously inju

nbc bay area's kimberly tere is at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco where hundreds of people gathered today to denounce the program. hello, kimberly. >> reporter: hello, diane that's right this church was packed today with people taking a stand against a federal immigration program that is responsible for deporting more than 60,000 people in this state over the last two years. >> reporter: an innerfaith meeting archbishop challenged governor jerry brown and attorney general pamela harris to opt out of the secure community's partnership with the federal government. under the law police are required to forward the fingerprints of all individuals booked into jails to immigration and customs officials. critics claim people with no prior criminal convictions or those arrested for a routine traffic violation are ensnared in the program. >> her husband goes tuvwork and that's the last she sees of him and last her children see of him. this just shouldn't be. we should -- a government should not be doing that to people who are

nbc bay area's kimberly tere is in oakland with the latest. >> reporter: that service just wrapped up at st. columbo church where the 110 lives lost to violence in oakland this year were honored. among that number are three children who were shot and killed in separate incidents in the last five months. the most recent one just last night. oakland police say 5-year-old gabriel martinez jr. was outside the taco truck on international boulevard which his family owns when a man opened fire there. this was just after 8:30 p.m. gabriel died at children's hospital less than a half an hour later. family says gabriel's father is inconsolable. the boy was just a few feet away from him when the shooting happened. >> he was there with the little boy and little boys just playing around. and out of nowhere he heard gunshots and my dad was like don't get scared and when he checked it was a little boy there, little brother. >> after the shooting the gunman took off in a car with a woman. police are still trying to identify the suspects. police say the motive is unclear right now but they do not beli

live in san francisco, kimberly tere. >> thanks for the update. we have breaking news sacramento. an accident happened around an hour ago at 26th avenue in south sacramento. the light rail train hit a small sport utility vehicle at the crossing. six people were taken to the hospital for serious injuries ana dozen for minor injuries. investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the accident. we'll bring you more information as soon as we have it. >>> in oakland, police are investigating the suspicious killing of a man and a woman last night. police say they found the bodies of the two victims inside a car at about 9:30 last night. the car was parked in front of their home on apple avenue on lake merritt. they were a longtime couple who had just moved into the neighborhood. police went to the home to check on the couple after co-workers reported the two did not show up for work. one person of interest has been detained in this case. >> officers did discover some unusual circumstances regarding this vehicle. i can't go into these particular details because of the i
