nbc bay area's kimberly terry has her story. >> free all three.ree all three. >> sarah shourd says while she's physically free, emotionally she's trapped in iran where her fiancee and friends are still being detained. >> the image of them sitting in their cell side by side is something that is with me every moment. >> reporter: in her first public appearance in the bay area since her release september 14th, she called on iranian officials to let shane and josh go. they were arrested in july 2009 near the iran/iraq border. iranian authorities accuse them of illegal bring crossing the border and spying. shourd denies the allegations, she was told she was being released for diplomatic reasons and now feels she must be the voice for shane and josh. >> in a lot of ways i'm experiencing what the families have been experiencing throughout this entire ordeal. it's impossible to have -- there's no second that i don't think about shane and josh in their situation. there's so many ways i'm carrying the prison walls inside of me. and that my separation from s

kimberly terry is in berkeley tonight with more. >> reporter: sarah shourd has been home in berkeleyor the last few days after being released less than a month ago from the iranian prison where she was detained for the last 14 months. sarah shourd along with shane bauer and josh fattal were taken into custody near the iran/iraq border. they were accused of illegally crossing the border and spying. shourd continues to deny the allegations and says they were just on vacation, hiking through a rack's northern kurdistan region. shourd says she doesn't know when life will be normal again, she spends her days on the phone and computer doing what she can to be a voice for shane and josh. she went rest until they are released. >> when i used to sit outside with shane and josh in the courtyard they would ask me to sing for them. they would tell me, sing louder, we want to hear you. we want you to sing as loud as can you possibly sing. and that voice is still echoing in my mind, shane and josh asking me to speak louder, to shout out, cry out for them and cry out for their freedom. >> at an oak

that didn't quite turn out to be the case, kimberly terry is at the fair grounds in alameda, pleasanton with a look for us. >> reporter: this is one of the final get togethers for the tea party members prior to the november election, you're right, diane, organizers were expecting a much bigger crowd here, some estimates, you mentioned, there's another estimate that 20,000 people would be here. they didn't get those numbers, but they did get people here who say they're spirited and in agreement when it comes to what they are looking for, that is a return to conservative values in america. tea party backed candidates were invited to address the crowd including secretary of state and also state controller just to name a few. high profile candidates did not show up here, including republican candidates for governor and senate meg whitman and carly fiorina. they were not here, however, their campaigns set up informational booths. people who were in attendance liked what the candidates had to say and hope to see major changes in the government come 2011. >> we're going to be able to do some w

kimberly terry's in walnut creek with more. >> like most cities in california, walnut creek is trying to come up with additional resources, and city leaders think that tourism could be one them. >> next week the walnut creek city council will discuss the creation of a tourism business improvement district. hoping to get people to come here and stay a while. >> obviously we're not a disneyland or san francisco, but there are people who would come. and will come and do come. >> the move would give the city the power to levee fees on its hotels, ranging from $1.50 to $2 per night. the president of the walnut creek chamber of commerce says the tourism business could stand to raise $275,000 a year, which would then be used for marketing. jay hoyer says hotel and restaurant owners seemed excited about the plant to get people interested in what the city has to offer. >> i know this christmas season, i personally have 20 members of my family coming to visit. while they're here, we can go to san francisco or spend time here in walnut creek. we can attend a performance at the lecture center. th

kimberly terry is live with what's being done to make sure we are safer when the big one hits. >> good morning. a lot has been done to ensure that the infrastructure is sound should another earthquake hit. drills have been done to give residents a chance to improve preparedness. volunteers are ready to spring into action. the 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the bay area on october 17, 1989. according to geological surveys, there is a 63% chance an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 or higher could strike before 2031. in and around the bay area, schools and highways and other buildings have been retro fitted to with stand a quake of up to 8 on the richter scale. other structures have been torn down. in 21 years a lot has changed. thousands of private homes and also apartment buildings are still vulnerable and most of these were built decades before building codes were upgraded for greater safety. others are built on landfills which could cause buildings to collapse in a major quake. the other risk is to hospitals, some of which are falling behind. they are retro fitting because of higher

nbc bay area's kimberly terry is in daley city with more for us. >> reporter: hello, diane. you can see the signs from last night. the overnight event i should say hosted by the local radio station licht105, it's called the subsonic spookfest. an all-electronic music concert that was hosted by this local radio station overnight. several deejays performed this show. that was not billed as a rave, just to be clear. it was opened to those 16 years of age and up. and according to emergency responders, all 16 patients were at this event. now they say all of them were being treated for drug and alcohol-related overdoses. an ambulance with the american medical response was already here at the cal palace. it was on standby, but additional crus had to be called in, some coming from as far away as alameda county to help with these patients. the victims were taken by ambulance, hospitals across san mateo county an san francisco. >> we saw a lot of altered levels of consciousness. a lot of vomiting. a lot of vaspiration-type stuff. >> reporter: live 105 has not returned our request for

today in the bay's kimberly terry has the details. it's all about the money. >> reporter: that's right, laura. the san jose redevelopment agency is looking for the funds to buy the last couple of par l parcels of land needed to build the ballpark downtown for the oakland a's. for well over a year, there have been talks of the a's moving to the south bay and san jose has taken the approach if we build it, they will come. the redevelopment agency is buying up pieces of land in downtown san jose hoping to get baseball's approval to build the ballpark. there reports the agency which has recently been cut nearly in half may not have the money to seal the deal. there is also speculation of oakland a's owner lou wolf stepping in to buy some or all of the land. san jose's mayor is deeply committed to the project and all of this is going on with the commissioner of major league baseball is waiting for the final report from the committee on the viability of the move to the south bay. >>> santa clara police department, at least he is out of a ja
