. >> reporter: meet kina, the 2-year-old german short-haired pointer, one of five k-9 teams that will sniff out explosives working to keep you safe on your next flight out of philly international. >> once they get out of the truck, they are working, their nose is always working, always sniffing the air. they are trained to pick up certain explosive material, and when they do, they'll react. >> reporter: the k-9 initiative is a pilot program that began in 2011. it's now permanent. >> you'll see the dogs out there. i tell people don't be afraid of the dogs, we keep control of the dogs. >> reporter: you'll see them mostly at tsa checkpoints. >> at the checkpoints you'll see them, they may come up, sniff up and down. >> reporter: today with this demonstration, she simply sits when she smells something suspicious on a decoy. handlers can read the behavior without a subject realizing a scent is detected. >> something like a bakery or pastry shop or if you walk in, you would smell a pizza, these k-9s could walk into a pizza shop and pick up on flour, on the tomato, on the basil, and on the m
