and there's much more ahead going into the weekend, possibly in total about 35 inches of snow for kingvaleust this week. so that's going to be amazing, seeing that we are seeing snow levels coming up. we're also dealing with some cold temperatures. take a look at thursday morning's temperature, 31 degrees. that's here in the bay area. it's going to be cold and that's after that first wave of rain comes through and we get ready for the one for the weekend. and looking at the chilly temperatures that will continue in san francisco, highs in the mid to upper 50s all week long. >>> mike, it seems like a pretty calm commute right now. >> kind of risky saying that. you don't want to jinx anything. the only thing on the grid of major concern are folks traveling northbound on 680, because they still have the closure that was scheduled to be picked up at 5:00. we know that typically lasts until about 5:30, 5:45, and there may be another 20 minutes or so where the crews are still blocking northbound 680. a live camera from caltrans does show no lights traveling north right now. that should be cleare

ritual from her sister station in sacramento is in kingvale and we will have the latest from her in 30utes. >>> at home, all eyes are on the coastline where the storm surge could brew up more dangerous waves. is advisory will be in effect for most of the day today. here is darren peck with the latest. >>> we are mostly done with the system but not entirely. there are some showers that will work their way through. it will get breezy. 30 mile an hour winds today will be responsible for giving you a wind chill and the numbers for daytime highs, it will feel a little cooler than this , even though the numbers are mid to upper 50s and that is pretty much on the marker average this time of year. you have to add in a little wind chill and it will feel cooler. the next storm gets here from the north and that one will be able to deliver widespread rain as we get into saturday. you can see that system arriving in the middle of the day on saturday and that will give us perhaps a quarter of an inch of rain . but it will be able to produce much more snow in the sierra and that becomes the highlight

an additional 6 to 8 inches of snow around the tahoe city area and up to 18 inches of snow near kingvale watching those conditions and talk about bay area rain coming up. >>> cinthia, you're looking at 50 and 80. how is it looking? >> right now i was checking with caltrans to see what was going on as far as the chain controls. there are just a few to mention. what was very popular on their page was all of the alerts saying ice and snow, drive with caution, slow down. so let's see what's happening right now. if you're taking 50, there was a notice that there is chain control after kirkwood, and that's limiting you to 25 miles an hour. make sure you have the chains and you're driving at that speed limit, and also it wouldn't be a bad idea to carry emergency kits, things like warm blankets and food if you do get stuck up there for multiple hours, possibly an extended period of time. you don't want the kids to run out of snacks. we also have chain control as you make your way on southbound 89 around tahoe city. that's also limiting you to 25 miles an hour. we're going to continue to see what

expecting a drier day ahead in the mountains and we're getting a live look here on interstate 80 at kingvalein soda springs and you can see there's still plenty of snow there on the ground. so chains are still required on both i-80 and highway 50. >>> all right, so let's take you up to the mountains now for that avalanche aftermath. we have learned this morning a bay area man lost his life at palisades tahoe. the avalanche happened in a flash sending tons of snow pummeling down the mountainside and some were hurt and others knocked off their feet. here's more from kelsi thorud in tahoe. >> reporter: officials here in palisades tahoe have identified the victim who was killed in that avalanche. they say he was 66-year-old kenneth kidd and he's from both point reyes as well as the truckee area. now snow like this has been coming down all day ever since this avalanche happened. a terrifying moment on the slopes caught on camera. skiers calling for help, attempting to dig out multiple people buried in a 150-foot wide avalanche at the palisades tahoe ski resort. fellow skiers unable yet to help, f

weekend, anywhere from 6 inches of snow at lake level in south tahoe up to 18 inches of snow in kingvale, and it may be even higher in some of those really per elevations across the sierra. so, we'll be watching that. i'll also time out the rain and the weekend in a few minutes. >>> just into our newsroom, san francisco mayor london breed has signed legislation to install 400 cameras across the xpected to go up at 100 intersections. this is all in an effort to crack down on crime including retail theft and car break-ins. that approval comes after a rule change signed off by the mayor last month regarding the new technology. there's no word on how long the installation process will take or which specific intersections are being targeted. >>> demolition of a south bay commercial building destroyed in a christmas morning fire has now been postponed until further notice. that's an update from south bay fire officials. several businesses were destroyed during that fire, including a nail salon, martial arts studio, and tutoring center. the demolition was anticipated to begin wednesday. so far,

and here's a live look at the road to the snow along i-80 at kingvale. plenty of people maybe heading up to the mountains this holiday weekend. you can see a couple of cars here and there. and right now, caltrans has lifted chain controls along 80 going up to the sierra. but definitely something to think about always keep the mains handy in and around those areas. >>> a lot of you at home are having that question to go to tahoe this weekend or not. you can thinking about that in the wake of now two avalanches there. this is a live look right now through a live camera to show you sideways snow, skiers and snowboarders because of the avalanches on high alert. the death of a bay area man and the others who had to be rescued swept down the mountain. under the force of that first avalanche. and then likely you saw on the node feeds yesterday, and on tv, word of yet another collapse of snow on the alpine meadows side of the mountain. nobody got hurt in that case. but craig hamilton saw the second avalanche and says it's a warning for all of us if we plan to go

here's a look at conditions right now along i-80 this afternoon in kingvale. you can see the roads are a little wet, but that will soon turn into snow. >>> check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen. if you're headed up to the mountains, have those chains and don't wear flip-flops. >> we're past the point you should really be heading in that direction because the winter storm warning goes into effect later. the roads will become icy and snow covered and it's going to be sloppy. let the road crews catch up and do their thing. let's look at the big picture and the storm system that brought us shower activity earlier today. that is moving out. it's the one-two punch of storm systems. it's hard to tell where one ends and the next begins. the next ripple in the atmosphere will drive more showers across the bay area is looming to our northwest. that will help ramp up snowfall rates in the high sierra. they are getting a rain/snow mix at the moment while the showers have ended in the bay area. a few passing showers are possible late tonight and to star

this is what it looked like last night at kingvale.s chains are required on both 80 and highway 50. and right now the police are actually advising drivers don't travel to the sierra at all. all right, now, steve paulson is watching all of this. he has your new forecast for wednesday. >> well, finally, the sierra david. they've been waiting and waiting and waiting. november, december were not kind, but it looks like january will be. we've been getting okay rain. we ended december with some good amounts. we had some one inch amounts in the last 24 hours. there's still a little bit in the pipeline for us here coming down from the northwest, but this is really more about the sierra than for us, but it's still pretty good for us. and you're seeing about a third of an inch to over an inch of rain, possibility of some thundershowers, a couple little bands have to rotate through here, mainly in the morning. then after that i think we'll be on the drier side. but 50s on. the temps here are low 60s. all right. allies here to give us an update. a

then the third storm, there's a possibility that we may see maybe even up to 34 inches of snow in kingvalewill be great for the resorts that are needing snow, not rain. we look at rain in the bay area in our forecast and we are going to see temperatures coming down as well. for our overnights, down into the upper 30s and low 40s. so we do have a couple of rounds of rain coming in that get us started for the new year, while san francisco will continue to see temperatures in the upper 50s. >>> getting on the roads this morning, that's a live look at the golden gate bridge. it is a little damp this morning. maybe misting a bit as you drive across. but overall it's the fog that's been causing issues. and we can see the yellow highlighting there, if you're coming through 84, trying to make that cut through from livermore toward fremont, you will encounter some dense fog. and still watching this incident, it looks like it's on the off-ramp for olympic boulevard that they've had to close and maybe dealing with a rollover crash in that area. so they're trying to get that picked up. it doesn't seem

we've been looking at this 80 at kingvale, uh, shot all morning long.>> good job. caltrans going through there. but here's the deal. more weather is coming. so things change quickly. and we did just check the caltrans website. and chains are required on eastbound 80. that's from cisco grove in placer county to truckee. right now if you're going 50 and you're headed to south lake tahoe, no chains required there. that of course, is the other main highway linking the bay area to the tahoe area. but again, as this picture circles, we know that they're working hard. >> yeah,oked like that shot was stalled, but the cold was good. conditions yes, exactly. the little circle of destiny was was going there, but i like it. it certainly looked much better for caltrans crews. certainly getting out there, clearing that roadway, we saw a lot of slush and snow and ice and roberto, more to come. yes you nailed it. >> it's been a rain, sleet, slush snow mix. and now here comes the big storm. and we are anticipating up to three full feet of snow and the highest elevation.

this is 80 at kingvale. you can the lens a bit covered by some of that fresh snow that has fallen now in the last 24 hours and interstate just going to say you can barely see the road, but now you've got a truck going by. so you can see where the carve out is, but not a lot of what's right and get out there with the plows still. >> so it's a little bit. it's a little iffy. little dicey. if you're heading up there, we do know that sugar bowl actually is looking pretty good. they have reported seeing some nice snow come out with this last system to fact national weather service says they got upwards of 16 inches. why? wow. so gray boarders and skiers are so excited. >> the folly got 57 inches of snow. you know, every says a little bit different. this is a little slower to start. we've got open on december. first at but it looks like winter is here this week. so we're expecting some snow tonight and another storm on saturday. >> yeah, and keep in likely chain controls are going to be in effect throughout the si

in total, we could see another 0 inches of snow in kingvale just this week. then as we take a look at how much rain we measured, there was a huge range in what we saw across the bay area. look at that. it's almost hard to believe that mount tam had over 8 inches of rainfall over the weekend, 8 inches of rainfall, i'll say that again, over the weekend. and there were 2 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. while most of us had rainfall totals in the hills like we saw in oakland, closer to 2 inches there, san francisco, less than an inch, and san jose didn't even make a quarter inch of rainfall. so we are, once again, going to see these ranges and rainfall totals going into the next couple of days, as the next system approaches. ahead of that, we have some rain, some more clouds that are coming in for this morning. so we're still seeing the storm system well off the coast. by the time it gets here, the rain won't really ramp up until late tomorrow afternoon into the evening. we could start out with some very light rain tomorrow morning in parts of the nor

a live look caltrans camera eastbound one that's interstate 80 at kingvale.ot too far from where you get off at. sugar bowl exit. as you can see, snow is already on the ground. not too much coming down, but that is likely to change here shortly. some weather models predict several more inches of snow through sunday morning, and that's a pretty good elevation all the way down to the lake. so if you're not up there yet, you plan on skiing tomorrow. might want to wait. >> yeah, it looks clear. you know, this is the time when you like to drive up. you're like, oh, it's not so bad. and you can see there's not a lot of snow piled up there in that space. but that change is very, very quickly in those whiteout conditions can make it very dangerous. and, you know, scary for people heading up there, even with chains on it. it's not a fun ride when you can't see anything. >> yeah. when we're talking about levels down to 3000ft, that's a long, long road up. yes so take it easy out there. the advisory is already in place. it will expire tomorrow morning at about 4 a.m. so

that's highway 80 at kingvale. that's just a few miles to the west of donner summit.as you can see, it's kind of tough sledding right now. chain controls have been lifted, though, both 80 as you see here in us 50 restrictions are still in place on a lot of the secondary highways in the greater tahoe area for those headed up to the mountains, expect major traffic impact, all due to the snow and likely chain restrictions coming back on probably sooner rather than later. so if you're heading that way, um, pack your patience. >> yes. >> or maybe wait a day. >> or wait. i think monday. safety first. and that's the thing we got to remember. it's the beginning of winter. so even people want to ski. let's let's stay safe on those roads. and, rosemary, when you have a day like this, when it just kind of keeps coming, caltrans does a really good job of trying to keep up with that. but you know, it's nonstop. >> yeah, it's so slow. i don't do it often in the winter time because i love lake tahoe in the summer. but wow, it only takes once or twice during those wintry moments befo
