what more do we know about the addition of kinzinger to this committee? >> this was a big move by speaker nancy pelosi adding kinzinger to the select panel and making him now the second republican to join the investigation. we at cnn reported first that pelosi was considering this idea as a way to bring even more legitimacy to an already bipartisan investigation. she made it official today, however. kevin mccarthy, the gop leader, wasting no time weighing in. he is saying that pelosi's structuring the committee around her own political needs. he said in a statement, quote, speaker pelosi's rejection of the republican nominees to serve on the committee and self-appointment of members who share her preconceived narrative will not yield a serious investigation. of course, kinzinger is likely to face a lot of blowback from his own party, just like cheney did. but he's brushing these concerns aside and making clear that he is ready to embrace this assignment head on. he said that he agreed on serve on the committee that while this was not a position i expected

illinois congressman adam kinzinger joins liz cheney. accept that appointment from the democratic house speaker nancy pelosi. quote, we are duty bound to conduct a full investigation on the worst attack on the capitol since 1814 and to make sure it can never happen again. i'm joined by cnn senior political analyst john avlon and political commentator margaret hoover. thank you for joining me on a sunday. margaret, let's start with you. do you think that this is a political risk for these two republicans, and if so, just how much of a risk is it? >> yeah, ryan, great to see you. it breaks my heart to say, yeah it is a political risk. they are taking a real political risk by joining this commission but it's a risk that, among many other risks, noble, brave and morally courageous risk they've already taken. liz cheney and adam kinzinger have proved that they have absolute backbone to stand for their positions. the way the january 6th commission has been treated by the house republican leadership going around undermining it, pretending they

are you happy to see adam kinzinger and liz cheney on the january 6th collect committee? you must be welcoming the move seeing that kevin mccarthy and the rest of the republicans took their toys and went home last week? >> i certainly thrilled to see this. the investigation is bipartisan and what's important is the information that's been subpoena and i've been saying since january 7th, for example, that the president -- that donald trump who was then the president on january the 7th, that his phone records, his texts it, all of the documents from that day should be subpoenaed and now we know from these many books that are coming out there's a lot of details from the people with him there on january 6th. the whole time frame before i was a member of congress i was a chief couple on the government reform committee which is the largest investigative committee, and what we would do is get a timeline and subpoena all the documents, and i think in this case you want to go, you know, around election day through january 20th. >> yeah. >> and find all of the people who were invol

having kinzinger there, what are your thoughts? >> bring it on. he should do it. they should full all five slots with patriotic republicans who recognize the reality and truth and want to become democracy. our politics are not as divided as people may have perceive. we have a third of the country believing the big lie and anti-vaxxer. may not be a precise over lay but we need to realize there is a single litmus test when it comes to patriotism. that is believing in and supporting democracy. not as many as i would like to see, but any of the 35 people that didn't vote to overturn the election, they should be asked to join and fill those five slots that mccarthy has abandoned in an attempt to distract from the fact that he opposed and killed a bipartisan commission from the beginning. >> margaret, if we could switch gears here. ifn a sense it is related because it has to do with working together, the concept that the senate was formed around and the comments last night from president biden on the voting rights and don said, paraphras

you also have adam kinzinger. bipartisan and the records when they come out are going to show you that those closest to donald trump told him that what he was doing was absurd. >> ana, where do you see this committee going? and what are you hoping to learn in this process? >> look, i'm hoping for some immediate facts. i'd like to know exactly how this happened and why this happened, where the failures were. i'm also hoping on the long term for some recommendations so that it doesn't happen again. and if the republicans are what they used to be, the law enforcement party, the ones who talk about blue lives matter, they owe it to the capitol police and to those people who were beaten and harassed and abused on january 6th to find some answers. i think nancy pelosi should not only consider appointing adam kinzinger but also bring in more republicans in other roles, advisory roles, staff roles. i think there should be a place for somebody like a bill hurd who brings cia experience, you know, security experience, or a

liz cheney, along with adam kinzinger just to be clear have, to my mind, pretty terrible politics. i mean, that's where i'm coming from. they have extremely conservative voting records. they vote for tax cuts for rich people and against abortion rights and almost everything else along the party line or as much as you can identify what the ideological party line of the republican party is. but of course, that doesn't matter. and it didn't save cheney from being kicked out of her position as the number three in house republican leadership. that's not some backbench committee assignment, that's way up near the top and she was kicked out because donald trump has worked every day since the election and since the insurrection to exert the influence he has to make fidelity to the big lie and a commitment, an enduring commitment to overturning american democracy the litmus test for republican party membership. now, the influence that the former president has his narrow bit deep. only works among certain set of people but among the people it works with, it's strong. so we're still watching

with both cheney and kinzinger voting against mccarthy. >> the problem isn't that there's republicans on the committee, the problem is who picked the republicans and the republicans that are picked. there's a special level of disdain across the country for those two, as even compared to some of the democrats on the committee. >> the country realizes they have a lot to hide, and they don't want us to get to the truth. we're going to get to the truth, and we have a strong bipartisan committee right now. >> reporter: the committee is expected to present never before seen video footage of the attack today, and will feature the testimony from four law enforcement officers. officer michael finone who was tased with his own taser and suffered a heart attack that day will testify. another officer, harry dunn will also appear. he's publicly spoken about the racial slurs he and other black officers heard from rioters. >> here we are giving so much, and putting our lives on the line to protect democracy and keep it, and we're being called racial slurs, traitors. >> reporter: and democrats are su

kinzinger released a statement. "let me be clear, i'm a republican dedicated to conservative values but i swore an oath to uphold and defend the constitution and while this is not the position i expected to be in or south out, when duty calls, i will always answer." eli, we'll get to kinzinger's announcement in a minute. set the stage for tuesday. what can we expect from this first hearing? >> you know, they will try to make this seem like this is not a partisan effort, and they will try to focus on january 6th, but it's just, it's full of partisan. it really depends on what lens you're looking through, whether you see this as an insurrection, what it was or if you're buying the what-about-ism and excuse making and gas lighting from former president trump and all the republicans saying what he wants them to say, downplaying it and belittling it. it becomes so politicized i think it's going to be really difficult for this committee to make this, get the country to see this investigation as fact-based and nonpartisan.

all eyes are on adam kinzinger.ty who voted to create the committee. he's been outspoken of his party's leadership and its handling of the january 6th riot, as well as former president trump, and he would really be the only candidate, probably the only candidate who will be interested. it's poised to have its first hearing on tuesday. they will hear directly from police officers, capitol police and dc metro police, who were tasked with defending this capitol from those rioters. in addition to that, president biden yesterday mentioned the january 6th committee when he was across the river in virginia campaigning for the democratic candidate for governor. take a listen to what he had to say. >> listen, i mean, think about it. turn on the television every day and seeing a replay of what happened on january 6th, and saying, i was told there were a lot of peaceful, wonderful people. god, no, i really mean it. think about it. it is bizarre. we have to keep cutting through the republican fog and show that we, the people, a

mccarthy said kinzinger was self appointment. are you encouraged to see some of this? looks like the republicans are not on board at all. >> i want to underscore something that leigh anne said. these are not central moderates. they have reputations in both parties. some republicans will attack them now, but the truth is a lot of the republicans that did vote to certify the election result earlier this year are happy to see adam kinzinger and liz cheney on the committee. some 35 republicans voted to establish a january 6th commission. so even though some republican leaders and other obviously rank and file republicans are attacking them, there are a decent amount of republicans that are glad that they will be on the committee. they are holding democrats honest. making sure this is not a part an exercise. this is too important to make this a partisan exercise. we have to get down to what happened and we should do it in a bipartisan manner. >> i'm just wondering who. i have not heard ewe don't really hear republicans speak out to say "this is great. it has been like this

it's a bipartisan commission with liz cheney and adam kinzinger.here are a lot of republican members of congress who also want the facts. it's not just the few high-profile people like tevin earthy appointed to try to disrupt the commission. many people privately want the commission to do its job. and i think the american people have answers. >> regards to the witnesses we see cold, who will be on your list? you have said that donald trump might need to be questioned. what about other people? some have said the congressman jim jordan should be called as well. who would you like to see on the witness list? >> while the many people i would like to see actually are the secretary of defense at the time and some of the generals who were interested. why did it take so many hours to have any response to the capitol? and that leaves us vulnerable, not just as members of congress but if you're a foreign adversary looking at this and you say the knighted states cannot protect the most important institution of democracy and it took 5 to 6 hours, it makes us v
