i'm kira klapper. >> i'm kris sanchez. we want to start with the historic storm, the remnants of hurricane hilary. it looks really active for this time of year, lots of rain still in southern california. this is video from oak glen in san bernardino county. one of the main roads was transformed into a rushing river for a time as rain pounded the area. a flood warning remains in effect, at least through this afternoon. neighborhoods are being warned it will take at least several hours for the water from these storms to work through the local drainage system, especially in urban areas. >>> we have a live look at downtown l.a. this morning. you can see a little bit of cloud cover. is that rain, meteorologist kari hall? i can't tell on the monitor. >> it's been off and on, still happening there. >> my sister and mom live in southern california and they said it rained a lot yesterday, then it stopped, then it cam back and the wind was pretty heavy. >> yeah, it really depended on where you are. because if you called someone in s

i'm kira klapper. before we get to cinthia with our microclimate forecast, we have breaking news out of the east bay where a sheriff's deafty is in the hospital after a police chase ended in a crash. it happened just after 2:00 this morning. you see the damage. conta costa dep pis chasing a white silverado truck. the chase continued from 580 to highway 24 where the deputies were involved in a crash with that suspect. the deputy was transported to the hospital. the suspect is in custody right now. the chp tells us it's unknown how that crash happened. the condition of the deputy is unknown as well. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates throughout our newscast. >>> all right. going to turn now to cinthia with a look at our microclimate forecast. hey, cinthia. >> good morning, kira. good morning, everyone. if you look out the door and over to the coastline, starting with our typical fog around the bay area. taking a look. over the bay bridge span mixing out eventually and should see p

i'm kira klapper. happening today, the community of san jose is coming together to support a street vendor. you may remember, this video from last month showing two security guards approach a man selling strawberries at a san jose home depot. at one point one of those guards kicks over the man's crates. home depot promptly fired those security guards. now the community plans to buy out that vendor in a show of support. if you'd like to join, at that same home depot on story road in san jose. it starts at noon. >>> to maui now where we learned the death toll has risen to 80 people amid the deadly wildfire in lahaina. for many, this symbol of hope remains. the famous 150-year-old banyan tree, which sits in the heart of lahaina town, was badly charred but is still standing. locals hope the iconic tree will survive the scars of the fire. if the roots are still healthy, arbourists say it may have a chance to grow back. it was a gift from india and a small salveling planted back in 1873. it's growing branche

i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at the microclimate forecast. a mild morning out there right now. >> it's a mild morning because we are getting more of that tropical moisture coming into the bay area. morning, kira. good morning, everyone. 66 in downtown san jose. we are noticing some activity around the south bay. i'll get to that in a second. san francisco, starting off chillier at 58 with some of that fog hanging onto the coastline. yes, the storm still continues with hilary down south. we are picking up on activity overnight through the central valley, circling around parts of the sacramento valley and out onto the parts of marin county. lightning is being detected close to hollister as you approach interstate 5 there. so all of that activity, thanks to hilary, which will be downgraded later today from a category 1 to a tropical storm, once it does get into san diego, los angeles, really that storm intensifying as the morning hours continue today. we'll talk about all of the impacts and how close those showers will get today into the bay are

i'm kira klapper. more fallout from the racist text scandal involving east bay police officers. now the fate of a murder trial may hang in the balance. a contra costa county judge ruled the antioch officers who investigated the murder violated the racial justice act by exchanging racist texts during the investigation. now the judge will decide whether the murder case can continue. the defendant's attorneys are pushing for dismissal. >> wei want the court to exercise the full extent of its authority to try to restore some integrity to the policing from the antioch police department. >> tempers also flared outside the courthouse as the mother of one of those murder victims expressed outrage, that justice for her son could be impacted by the officers' actions. >>> alameda district attorney pamela price, the keynote speaker at a town hall meeting in oakland today happening at the cornerstone missionary baptist church on 38th street. it starts at 1:00 p.m. the church is asking for questions to be emailed ah

thank you so much for joining us, i'm kira klapper. meteorologist rob mayeda joins us with a quick look at the microclimate forecast. i love when you can see the skyline of san francisco. >> this is a nice start to the morning. we have sunshine in oakland. right now we have temperatures in the upper 50s and some baseball this afternoon, early afternoon start, look at the temperatures in oakland, into the 80s today and off to the west, san francisco will be seeing temperatures in the 70s. it is the inland valley is, that is where the heat will set up two of the weekend. upper 90s to as hot as 104 degrees in fairfield and upper 90s south of san jose. north bay temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s. after today, we do see some cooler changes in the seven-day forecast. monday and tuesday, moisture from tropical storm eugene could bring more mid-level clouds our way. let you know if there are any shower chances ahead on the today in the bay forecast in about 15 minutes. >>> we begin with breaking news this morning. police and fire

i'm kira klapper. bay area animal shelters are joining forces to help four-legged evacuees at the maui fire. many of them are safe here on the mainland. a cargo plane carrying dozens of shelter pets were welcomed and sent to six local animal shelters. the executive director of berkeley humane spearheaded the effort after seeing the devastation on maui. despite the fact that many bay area shelters are already at capacity. >> we're all full with animals already. so we decided to form a coalition. six of us had gotten together in order to all take a handful of animals to have a bigger impact. >> each shelter will decide when the pets go up for adoption. as for berkeley humane, they have these animals from maui and ready for forever homes during our nbc "clear the shelters" event happening next saturday, august 26th. >>> and a quick look at microclimate forecast with cinthia pimentel. >> good morning. so cute but so scared. don't worry. we'll find you a forever home. looking over san francisco, starting wi

i'm kira klapper. developing news out of san francisco where two juveniles were stabbed overnight. gate park. paramedics took both victims to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. no word on what led to the stabbing, but video taken near the scene shows police and park rangers trying to break up a large crowd. no word on any arrests. >>> the u.s. food and drug administration is taking emergency action in santa clara county after finding a dangerous species of fruit fly in the area. this comes after two oriental fruit flies were discovered. the fda says they present a significant threat to the environment, agriculture and economy of california. treatments began yesterday in the city of santa clara, but found the bugs in portions of cupertino, san jose, and sunnyvale. an eradication team will be applying natural atrack tanlt and poison for the next couple of days, repeat thing every other week until the flies are no longer detected. the fruit fly can infest and destroy more than 230 types of fruits and vegetables. >>> we're going to check in with cinthia pimentel for our sunday

i'm kira klapper. >>> new financial fallout for another bay area diocese on the heels of the catholicit faces more than 500 child sex abuse lawsuits. the archbishop says filing for chapter 11 allowing the diocese to deal with cases collectively as opposed to one at a time. bankruptcy also allows the diocese to reorganize its finances all while continuing to operate. both oakland and santa rosa diocese already filed for bankruptcy protection. in an open letter the archbishop saide was deeply saddened by the abuse of children and stressed that the vast majority alleged abuse occurred decades ago. recent reporting by our nbc bay area investigative unit uncovered new accusations against several san francisco priests still in ministry. victim advocacy and support groups blasted friday's announcement saying this wave of bankruptcies is about protecting secrets and reducing payments to abused victims. >>> going to take a turn and check in with cinthia with your microclimate forecast. cinthia? >> kira, good morning. good morning, everyone. we are going to be in for a very hot weekend. if you
