i'm kira klapper. oakland's largest private employer is telling workers to stay inside the office for lunch and breaks. this is in response to all the crime in oakland. the recommendations came in the form of a memo to kaiser employees. staff are being urged to make the changes to their daily routine in an effort to help keep kaisers staff from becoming victims of crime. blue shield of california says it's now paying for ride shares for employees and offering garage parking and private security to address crime concerns. safety in downtown oakland has workers divided. >> i think it's a bit of an overreaction. i have heard some of my co-workers being the victims of some crime maybe once a year or something like that. >> oakland police says it's coordinating increased security with kaiser. >>> in san francisco a 90-year-old toy store is closing. jeffreys toys is near union square. the oldest toy store started back in 1938 after 86 years in business it's now permanently closing next month. the current own

i'm kira klapper.d mayor officially began yesterday with a group mailing its notice of intention paperwork, including the required 250 signatures. recall organizers tell us they have lost trust in the mayor, noting crime in oakland. the city missing the deadline to file for grant funding for retail theft and the absence oh of a police chief. the final straw was the shooting death of an on-duty oakland police officer. >> there is such a laundry list right now of reasons to recall the mayor. but fundamentally, it's gross negligence, the inability to perform the job, and we're not safe right now. the only thing that she can do to avoid a recall is to do her job. >> the group is waiting for the city clerk to authenticate the signatures. then they'll have 160 days to collect 25,000 signatures to spark a recall election. we have reached out to the mayor's office for comment, but have not yet heard back. >>> all right. on this sunday morning, we'll check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at the microclimate

i'm kira klapper.n has been killed in a tragic fireworks accident overnight, just after the countdown to 2024. it happened outside an apartment complex at gateview and exposition drive around 12:40 this morning. a man says there was a group of young people lighting off fireworks that he describes as mortars. he tells us an older adult had been telling the young people to stop lighting the fireworks because it was getting out of hand. after that, this witness says he heard an explosion and screams. police say they gave the man first aid, but paramedics declared him dead when they arrived on scene. >>> we're going to take a big turn and go to meteorologist kari hall with the forecast for the first day of the year. >> yes, and it looks like a nice one. even though we're starting out with clouds and fog, we're headed for sunshine today and near normal temperatures, with upper 50s and low 60s all around the bay area. now, the rain holds off today, but does return to the bay area tomorrow. first starting out
