let's discuss with our panel phillip mudd and diplomatic analyst john kirby. john, let me start with you. we have been on this ever since we found out about it. the point of interest is never how is he dealing with the families. that is part of the moral agency with the president. it has to be done the right way, respectfully and truthfully. this started where we should be focused right now. what happened there? why didn't he talk about it for so long? is and how do you get to the bottom of something like this? what insight do you have right here? >> back to the statements that he didn't talk for 12 days, i think that is abominable. i understand in the day or two after when they were still trying to find sergeant johnson they wanted to be careful about what they put out publicly. that makes perfect sense to me. but not to put out a condolence statement is and that is why we got to this bickering between the congresswoman and the president. as to the mission itself, they are investigating this, as they always doment when you have deaths like this as a result of

john kirby, you know general kelly and you work with him at the pentagon.hat do you make of his appearance today? >> i can tell you it was something that he wanted to do, and it was gut-wrenching to watch him go through that. i can just imagine how it was painful to talk about his son and his own loss in that very personal way and there's nobody i know more credible on the pain and suffering that gold star families go through like john kelly and that certainly came across there. i was, though, sorry to see that the press conference and his comments got as political as they did, especially towards the end and his takedown of representative wilson. she knows this family. it's not like she wiretapped this call. they wanted her there. they wanted her to listen to it and we need to keep that in mind. it's also really important -- he talked about the message that was transmitted to those families and i get it and i've heard those words inside the military. but transmission of a message isn't receipt and we need to at least allow for the possibility that a young 2

all right, joining me now, cnn's global affairs correspondent elise laffit, military analyst john kirbyl analyst ron brownstein. good morning to you all. released a statement saying the decision would call into question whether the u.s. can keep its word. what's your take on that, the ramifications of the president's decision? >> couldn't agree more with secretary kerry on that. one of the things we have to keep in mind about this, there's a lot of things not to like about the president's decision, but one is it calls into question the united states' ability to abide by an agreement that we've signed up to. and when you talk about what's going on in north korea, if you're sitting in pyongyang now and see what the president just did, how likely you're going to want to be to have any serious talks with the chinese, russians, or united states about any kind of talks here in terms of trying to maneuver away from their own nuclear weapons capabilities? not to mention the message it sends to our own allies and partners about how trustworthy the united states can be in negotiations on the worl

. >> john kirby, we just spoke with a former special forces officer who obviously is still very muchh with the military. i asked him, do you think there is some sort of specific plan that he is referring to? and he said yes, that actually he is referring to something, it is some sort of showing of the cards of something. and truth be told we don't actually know. what's your evaluation of some of the concerns this raises? >> the caveat that i'm not in intelligence anymore and not in the room as they plan military operations i'm leaning more towards david and dana. i think this was really for effect. i would be very surprised if there was really any more specific behind it than that. saw an opportunity to get a good camera spray in front of those military leaders and look presidential. he had a tough week, puerto rico, iran deal, moron comments by tillerson. this was a chance to wrap himself in the flag and a cloak if you will and make himself look good. now, the military conducts operations as you know all over the world. so something could happen in next couple of days that he had no

john kirby, retired admiral.nts the nuclear arsenal modernized, in tip-top shape, but flatly denying he wants to increase the number of nuclear weapons. but how does that fit into previous statements he's made on nuclear proliferation? >> well, two different issues. he's been fairly consistent on modernization. we know he's got a nuclear posture review going on right now. do d.o.d. is working their way through that. additional modernization regimens as n. addition to what president obama did, or whether he wants to develop new weapons. plaintiffs and use, he's been all over the map. well, i would never take any options off the table. on proliferation, he said right with you, wolf, on this show that he wouldn't mind actually considering giving japan and south korea nuclear weapons. then later set perhaps even saudi arabia. so he's -- and at the same time said that proliferation was the biggest problem the world faced. he said that during the campaign. he's been all over the map on that. >> you know, he also said,
