our diplomatic analyst retired rear admiral john kirby joins me now, keep occur pentagon hat on for me first. what's different today now that they have seen this latest test, now that their greatest fears are realized, the escalation, improvement in the north korean missile and rocket tool has been dramatic, much faster than anybody thought would happen. what's different today at the pentagon? is there a viable option military option? >> i think from a pentagon perspective, things aren't all that different. certainly this new missile increases the sins of urgency. obviously it contributes to their better capabilities now to target as mattis said yesterday anywhere in the world. i don't think that the pentagon wasn't aware this was sort of where things were going. what it will do in the pentagon is force them to revisit some of their deterrents and containment strategies. they'll be discussing with their south korean allies as well as the japanese to determine what, if anything, needs to changing in terms of a pot tour, a footprint. i don't expect this is going to lead to any specific d

let's bring in our global affairs corporate elise labott and retired admiral john kirby.u think of the president's new tone when it comes to china? >> well, very interesting. the campaign trail he is talking about china raping the united states and now he's saying i don't blame china for wapg the united states. i think you have his national security advisers saying yes trade is important, but we really need to get china to the table on north korea. whether they will be able to do that remains to be seen and i don't think that they really secured any concessions here. but you've noticed he always says that he will give china a kind of deal on trade if they cooperate on north korea. and i think that is what you saw again today. he is trying to butter them up to get something on north korea. but trade is certainly one of his premiere issues and i think his base will be very disappointed with the tone that he took toward the chinese. they are still building that relationship though and i think that is part of that. >> his message is don't blame china, blame the obama administ

. >> john kirby, you used to be the spokesman for the state department and the pentagon during the obamatration. what's the impact of all of this that it's having on american allies? speak to us as a 30-year veteran, a retired rear admiral of the u.s. navy. >> to pick up off dana's point, which is really good, this feeds into the narrative of isis. they see this as a clash of cultures between the east and west, between islam and christianity and judaism and this feeds right into it. so it's going to probably encourage if not incite violence by these extremist groups. don't forget, some of those allies are major muslim countries that we need to rely on for the fight against isis in iraq and syria and in afghanistan. so this makes it hard for them, too. and i think it's extraordinary that the prime minister of great britain had to come out today and say it was wrong for the president of the united states to send a tweet. just think about that for a second. our closest ally has had to come out and say it's wrong for the president to be tweeting something like. it's obviously hitting them ri

pentagon correspondent barbara starr and former pentagon press secretary and retired admiral john kirbyi know you've been looking into this all day. give us the latest on this accident and how it happened and what we know about the ongoing rescue ops. >> the navy says it is still investigating. there is some speculation out in the region that the plane suffered some sort of engine failure. what we do know is they were able to recover, to rescue eight people quite quickly and take them on board the carrier "ronald reagan" where they are said to be in good condition, rescued by helicopters. so clearly within research of rescue forces. still, of course, the search goes on. they were not able to rescue or recover three on board the plane and the work goes on to try and find them and rescue or recover them. those families, of course, facing an agonizing thanksgiving holiday, waiting for word about what has happened to their loved ones, jim. >> no question. the tempo of operations in the pacific is particularly high now. you have additional aircraft resources. you have additional flights, muc

former state department spokesman and cnn military and diplomatic analyst, retired rear admiral john kirbynd nancy mcildowny, thank you for joining us. why would secretary tillerson exclude these countries on an issue like this, child soldiers. it sounds like something we could all agree on, this is bad. >> well, it's very clearly bad. the reason that was given initially was that tillerson determined that the countries had made some progress even though he and others in the state department acknowledged they were still using child soldiers. the irony here is that the law gives flexibility to designate that child soldiers are being used and simultaneously or shortly thereafter to issue a waiver sore the military assistance that would otherwise be restricted could go forward. the fact that this flexibility was not used is what troubled the officers in the state department because they felt that their efforts to combat child soldiers, a horrific crime, were children sometimes as young as 8 years old are forced into combat. and by not designating these three countries, those officers felt that

joining me right now to discuss and for more -- for some reaction is retired admiral john kirby a formeran for the pentagon and state department and under the obama administration. john, are you with me? >> yes, i am. >> great to see you. what's your reaction to this? >> yeah, look i think there's going to be people on both sides of this, kate, that feel very strongly that didn't think he didn't get enough, those that he did. i would tell you that you shouldn't look at this sentence as no jail time. i mean he spent five years in captivity with the torturured and treated extremely badly. the other thing to keep in mind is since he was recovered, he cooperated with authorities and with the investigating officer all throughout that. the general who investigated this said he couldn't have been more pleased. he did provide good information to the intelligence authorities about his in captivity and in the taliban and he learned information from that. the other thing we need to remember is this is dishonorable discharge. this stays with him for the rest of his life. every time he goes to apply

joining me to discuss some of this, retired rear admiral john kirby, military analyst and former spokesmant the pentagon, james galliano and retired special agent. thank you for being here. john, if i can start with you, hearing from ryan browne laying the out, you also heard there, a bit earlier from the former air force chief prosecutor, he says that someone dropped the ball here. why wouldn't the shooter's conviction get reported to the national database? is there a reason? >> well, i mean that's what they're investigating right now. it's probably likely there were many balls dropped here. clearly the office of special investigations, the air force osi had a responsibility to enter that originally into the database but there were probably other opportunities for somebody to have checked that, like, for instance, not only when he was convicted but when he entered the brig, the jail, when he left the jail, and then when he was processed again for final separation under this bad conduct discharge. all of those were opportunities for somebody to take a look and see if that had been done. wh

let's talk this over more with cnn military and analyst john kirby. admiral, i was just on this plane three, four weeks ago, on the flight from -- i was going from the air base down in southern, you know, south korea over to the "uss ronald reagan" and here's my picture. i just wanted to put a face on this story. these were the two young pilots who were flying when our crew was on it, heading the to go report on the sailors and i felt entirely safe. obviously, at the time, we were head gear because of the catch on the aircraft carrier and strapped in six ways. how rare are crashes like these? >> for this particular aircraft, brooke, they're extremely rare. since 1980, the navy has only recorded three crashes of a c-2 greyhound. the most recent was back in 2012. this was an aircraft, though it's an old model, we've been flying it for more than 50 years, it's got an extraordinarily good safety record. and you just don't hear much at all of mishaps with these things. >> just to take people inside of a c-2, you're strapped in there, you're actually flying

joining me now for some more perspective on this is retired admiral, john kirby, former state department spokesman and pentagon spokesman as well. john, it's great to see you. >> thank you. thanks. >> from the u.s. perspective, as will was perfectly reporting it out, from the u.s. perspective, what has changed with this launch yesterday? >> well, what it's changed, obviously, we know they have this additional capability. this new missile that can go as high as it did and as far as it did, obviously, successfully. but what's really important, kate, is what hasn't changed. and what hasn't changed, and will hit this in his piece, is that the north continued to perfect this capability and they have no intention of slowing it down or stopping it. and the reason for that, they view the united states as an existential threat and they want to have this insurance policy at their behest, if they need it. and also to have this card, should we get the negotiations with them in any way, that they have the capability to take to the table with them. so thesenat hasn't changed. and i think we can expect

i want to bring in admiral john kirby. admiral, you've spent almost three decades in the navy. let's start with the submarine off the coast of argentina. what do you make of this new information that there was apparently a sound heard, a sound recorded that was consistent with an explosion? >> yeah, this is based off hitroacoustic sensors in the bottom of the ocean used to determine whether or not there's nuclear testing going on under sea or underground. and they picked aup this sort of violent nonnatural sound around the time the submarine was lost contact with. so it's ominous, boris. it certainly doesn't bode well. but i think we need to be real careful right now to change the character of discussion that's going on right now, which is the rescue operation. that's the why the u.s. army and argentinen army are treating this thing. they're using all information available to try and locate the submarine in the ocean. >> admiral, an international effort is underway right now to try and find the submarine. every hour is becoming precious. how much more time do you think rescuers

admiral john kirby mentioned earlier there are times that foreign reporters in other countries uncovernd bring to light information that they used to policies. and it can be a vital resource not only to the american public, but to provide evidence and bear witness in places where, you know, government officials can't necessarily go. >> no, that's absolutely true. and anderson, i need to be very careful here. no one needs to think that american journalists are in some ways agents of the american intelligence enterprise. i but i've got a lot of time. i used to fly into sarajevo during the war. and one of the things i always tried to do was sit down in the bar of the holiday inn there and talk to members of the press in order to get their impressions, as to what was going on there. they helped build wisdom inside the american intelligence community, because, frankly, they're there, they have a variety of sources, and they have a point of view that might not be naturally arrived at for people who do espionage for a living. >> general michael hayden, always good to talk to you. thank you ve

joining me now to discuss, retired rear admiral, john kirby, a cnn military and diplomatic analyst.ott, cnn's global affairs correspondent. great to see both of you. john, what is your expectation at this point of what president trump will be leaving beijing, after all of this pomp and circumstance and a busy day of meetings ahead? >> i don't know that he's going to be leaving with a whole lot, tangibly, to be honest with you. kate, i think he obviously wants to talk about trade issues and get the trade imbalance settled. certainly, north korea is going to be on the plate in the object. i guess, i'm sure, actually is to get china to do more. to implement the sanctions a little bit more strongly. but i also hope that he takes a little time to talk about the south china sea. and china's militarization in that part of the asia pacific region pb and maand make clear chinese that we are a pacific power. i don't know if he'll come away with tangible benefits, necessarily, buttic this i this an opportunity for them to hold some lines and try to get them to do more with pyongyang. >> i am s

that's the only thing -- point i've heard john kirby and others make. your take?yeah, to me it seems inappropriate. i mean, i don't really know -- i don't really see the argument for him getting involved in these things, and i think the point of, you know, him talking about with the justice department stuff, the most important thing is even if he wasn't actually going over the line, which i think you chronicled pretty well that he does step over the line pretty frequently. just by saying these things, he's telling them what he wants them to do. if you're really staying out of something and letting an investigation go forward without interfering then you don't speak publicly or telegraph in any way what you want and you don't put pressure on people to do the things the way you want them done. >> here is a tweet from a former obama white house aide. if the press uncovered secret conversations between trump and the doj where he pushed the fbi to investigate hillary, it would be a major scandal. i do think that we are all becoming so numb to this. >> yeah, i do think
