retired admiral in the navy kirby. i'm sure you admiral kirby have been in meetings taking place at the white house right now. we look for precedent for a country shooting down a u.s. drone of this size and capacity and capability here. couldn't find one. what is the reciprocal response for something like this? what kind of options are being discussed at the white house? >> i suspect that they're looking at a full range, jim. this could be a diplomatic response because this was not in iran airspace. and then from a military perspective, i doubt seriously that they're going to look for tit for tat kinetic military response if they could further escalate it. but there are further options you could play out in an overt way. you could put more forces in those international waters. put more ships in the strait of hormuz. you could demonstrate the presence there in a more over vert way. you could explore perhaps cybercapabilities to limit the capabilities that go on the iranian side. i suspect they're looking at the full ran

joining us now john kirby and abby phillips and retired army general james spider marks. let me read again what "the new york times" is reporting this morning. here is the heart of the matter. as late as 7:00 p.m. last night, military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike. the operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off. planes were in the air and ships were in position. the strike was set to take place just before dawn friday in iran to minimize risk to the iranian military and civilians. but the strike was then off at least temporarily. what are you hearing? >> what fred just reported i think is really significant. he indicated that the iranian systems lit up. that the united states could then intercept that activity relative to the drone which tells you our intelligence collection is robust in that part of the world. i don't know this, but it's not unusual for the united states to conduct operations, get the intended target to light up. then you can identify what's abhorrent and what's different. then go back and adjust the plan. and we
