[applause] [applause] gerda weissmann klein. life iseissmann klein's a testament to the human spirit. a holocaust survivor, she is separated from our parents and sent a series of not to labor camps. she was one of the few survivors among those forced to go 8 350 mile death march to avoid the liberating forces. from tragedy to triumph, she and her a husband probably started a foundation to promote tolerance, respect, and empowerment of students throughout the world. by sharing her story and encouraging others to see herself and one another, she has advanced the human understanding of people. fire chief jeff reeves and fire chief ronnie klein.od morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> chief reeves, i'm going to start with you. you pull up on the scene just after getting the call. did you realize at that point that, wow, this is going to be one heck of a challenge rescuing these survivors? >> yeah. just due to the elements the air temperatures being what they were minus 12 degrees. we knew it was going to be a difficult rescue in the proximity of the victims. >> chief reeves, given the extreme weather conditions did you kind of have that clock going on in the back of your mind, knowing that time was of the essence to get to these survivors survivors? >> yeah, without a doubt. any time we're dealing with that type of temperature and then the location of the patients time is always something that is in the back of your head. also knowing the trauma that they probably had suffered due to the fall. >> did you have a plan or did it take a few minutes to kind of survey the landscape and then decide what to do?

republican congressman mckeon of california and john klein of florida said today they met with pakistani officials during their trip there and made clear that there would be repercussions if the americans were not released. that is a report today from the associated press. earlier today at the hudson institute in washington, they held one of many discussions about the unrest, the political unrest in egypt. one of the guest, one of the panelists in that discussion was the former defense policy chief in the bush administration who criticized the obama administration in their response to the crisis in egypt. here's some of what he had to say today. >> now, officials interested in developing a strategy would have to start by clarifying some points, i believe, about democracy promotion or the promotion of liberal democratic ideas. and u.s. national security policy. and i'll offer a few thoughts that they might want to consider. one, the u.s. has practical interests in the spread of democratic institutions and the development of democratic institutions. the contrary view, the so-called realist
