kline, i'll turn to you now.rleans where you're being hard hit with new cases and hospitalizations. i understand your hospital is admitting higher rates of children now compared to earlier in the pandemic. can you tell us what you're seeing? >> well, on the outpatient basis at our ambulatory care sites, about 25% of the children we test are covid positive. about 20% of the new cases of covid-19 in the state of louisiana now are children and adolescents under 17 years of age. so we know that there is widespread and rampant community spread. at the same time, as dr. besser mentioned, we're seeing a smaller number of children but a substantial number admitted to the hospital. about twice as many as we had seen at any other time during the pandemic. and a good number of those are very young. half are under 2 years of age. half, as you said, byron, are without any kind of underlying condition. and some have been admitted to the intensive care unit, and sadly, we have had one death at the hospital during this current s

kline? >> they are.e're seeing quite severe illness, and so we can say that this virus is more contagious for sure. what we don't yet know with certainty is whether it's more virulent. certainly to my eyes and i think to what others are seeing across the region children are experiencing more severe disease than they have in the past. they come in in respiratory failure. they often require hospitalization in the pediatric intensive care unit, and a number of them have required mechanical ventilation. >> i know compounding the situation there is that a number of your nurses are out with covid diagnoses. you have a federal team that's coming in quite soon. what are your immediate needs, dr. kline? >> well, what has become limiting for us, robin, is staffing. it's not ppe or mechanical ventilators or anything of that sort. it's the availability of nurses, pharmacists, social workers. we were thin already. we had lost a number of staff over the course of 2020, and we have been working hard to replace those, b

mark kline, i've been wondering this.ing to parents who are unvaccinated and their children are hospitalized with covid? >> what i'm saying to all parents, whether they have a child hospitalized with covid are not, is get the vaccine. adults have to take responsibility for this. young children are not eligible for the vaccine just yet. so if you are under 12 years of age, you are not going to be vaccinated. and even for adolescents between 12 and about 17 years of age, the rate of vaccination has been very low. as adults we have to step up, show responsibility and get vaccinated, protect the most vulnerable among us, and that's young children. this pandemic is heavily impacting children across the age range. in our own hospital we are seeing children as young as seven or a nine weeks hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care. and those cases are entirely preventable if we do what we need to do, which is to mask up, distance, and above all, vaccinate. >> dr. mark kline, the thank you for being here, we hope you and your
