and amy klobuchar talked about this. the president mentioned it in the meeting.have any hope that's something? >> here is where i think we can find common ground. i think that there is agreement we need to tighten the background check. we have a bipartisan bill that is sitting in the house. john dingell was somebody who helped get the background checks into place. and people don't understand that right now the data that needs to be going into it is not going into it for a variety of reasons. if you have been a married domestic violence and you're convicted, you cannot have a gun. what our bill would do is if someone was a dating partner or had been in a relationship or stalker and convicted of having -- if they had a felony conviction, they would not then be able to own a gun. >> right. >> and we know you're five times more likely, a woman is in domestic violence situation to die if there is a gun present. so we're trying to time that and the president said that should be part of it. so we hoped that would be it. the red flag during the last week when we were hom

your colleague amy klobuchar with john kennedy wants to hear from facebook. what is the likelihood of getting congressional action here? >> well, we have to get to the bottom of this. and it is partly the mueller investigation. but it is partly what we do in our committees. and this really could extend to the judiciary committee, the commerce committee, the homeland security committee, all should be taking action and they haven't to date in the way that we need to, to help secure our democracy coming into the midterm elections and beyond the 2020 presidential elections. >> fundamentally do you think that social media should be more regulated when you look at how the russians have been able to spend this information, when you look at how campaigns, probably legally by the way, have been able to mine information and sort of stir dissent to try to manipulate voters, you know, does there need to be legislation here? >> well, i think there well may be the need. i'm leaning in that direction. we don't have all the facts yet. we're talking about a story that just br

klobuchar: i think we should. one area we should be able to to find common ground is to protect women from domestic abusers. i give the president the figure that 6000 women have died at the hands of their partners with guns, and that is more than the number of troops we lost in iraq and afghanistan. the background check would help a lot of domestic abuse cases. the other thing would be the bill that i have to extend protections to include partners and to prevent those convicted of stalking from buying guns. police organizations have supported this. can you talk about the connection between gun violence and domestic abuse? >> first of all, i share your concerns about discouraging domestic violence. as far as the correlation, i don't have the data. certainly anytime you have the emotions that occur in those incidents, anytime there is a fire or in the mix, it can get worse very quickly. sen. klobuchar: i want to turn to a 2016 report by the gao, which found that the fbi took longer to deny a firearm purchase because

amy klobuchar was in the room.it was pretty extraordinary, what were your key takeaways from it? >> first of all, it felt like something of a real discussion. and that was important. secondly, the president clearly committed to a strong background check bill, a strong universal background check bill. he said he didn't want a weak bill. it's clear he wanted to close the gun show loophole, he wanted to do something about background checks. and, of course, many of my colleagues that have been through the immigration debate in the last few weeks have seen him say one thing and the next day say another. so we have to hold him to this, because the american people are very focused on this now, young people going to march in the streets, and if we do nothing after he has said this, i don't think that's going to work very well for him. and so we have that discussion. he agreed to include my bill on domestic violence, which is a simple bill that's now passed in 12 states that makes sure that if people are dating each other a

klobuchar, graham, others that we worked on to try to put together some basic recommendations. today, though, and what tomorrow's hearing will focus in on is to try to get as much as of that information out as we possibly can and articulate these issues. last time it was the russians. it may not be the russians next time. they have set a pattern that others can follow. it could be the north koreans, or iranians. so the key thing at this point for us is not just protecting our elections from future russian intrusions it's protecting our election period and to try to work through that process as eventual nerabilitieses have been identified it's reasonable to close them and work with states as they try to be able to determine what misses they have may have so they can have those addressed in the days ahead. >> i want to echo the comments of my colleagues and in particular thank the chairman and vice chairman for conducting this committee and its work in such a bipartisan way. i think that it's not only about bipartisanship, we all have been working on this issue know that certain
