i want to bring in one of the jurors who was in that room, amy klobuchar of minnesota. thank you for joining us. what was it like in that room today? >> it was chilling to watch that video and to be in the very room where this happened. i'd say everyone was watching the video, and what we saw for the first time was just the timeline, the fact in just a visceral way that the president, the things he had been saying at the rally which, of course, we were not watching because we were doing our jobs in the senate, to basically directing this angry mob to go down the mall and then the timeline for when he did his first video hours later, and then the tweet which i had never put together the timeline there, that that was literally after the officers had been hurt, over 100 of them. that we now know that we had an officer that died because of the injuries sustained, that a woman had been shot, someone else had been trampled. what does he do? he sent out after being glued to the tv the tweet that says these are the things that happen when a victory is so viciously stripped away

thank you very much, senator klobuchar, and thank you, everyone, for being here today and bringing this hearing. it's much needed and i think this is the first of many. but i'd like to start off by saying my thoughts are with the brave capitol police officers. they put their lives on the line to protect us on january 6, and their heroic actions like the ones of officer goodman, they put those rioters away from us, and we know these courageous men and women are really hurting in the aftermath of the insurrection, and i've been particularly heartbroken to hear about the death of capitol police officer howard leningood. he was stationed by the door of my office. my thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. when they stormed the capitol on january 6, they came not only with weapons but they came with hate. the world watched in horror as a rioter inside the capitol proudly wore a camp auschwitz shirt as he and others violently pushed forward on the house and senate floors. all the while, the rioters are waving confederate flags, are hanging nooses on the front lawn. they're verbally ass

. >> thank you, senator klobuchar. thank you for having us at this hearing. i want to begin by thanking all the law enforcement officers that are represented here today. you and your families, thank you for your sacrifice, and certainly my heart goes out to those loved ones who lost their lives in this. in the spring and summer of 2020, many people criticized the use of the national guard in washington following some of the worst rioting in decades. the mayor said the national guard was unnecessary and possibly counterproductive. they said some of our d.c. national guard may not agree with their deployment. top pentagon officials emphasized that on january 6, the guard would have a, quote, far more muted presence than in june, saying, quote, we've learned our lessons. we'll be absolutely nowhere near the capitol building. mr. sund just stated that despite asking for the national guard, he was unable to get deployment on january 6. my first question is directed at mr. sund. do you think deploying the national guard in the summertime lessened the request to hav

. -- senator amy klobuchar. >> we are here today to better understand what is known in advance, whatere taken to secure the capitol and what occurred that day because we want to make sure nothing like this happens again. each of our witnesses held a leadership role at the time of the attack. >> let's look at what we have heard from the witnesses. one was the sergeant at arms for the house of representatives during the right. he quickly resigned after the attack. it is the first time he has spoken to the attack. he says they were prepared for a protest but not a riot. >> safety was always paramnt when making plans for january 6. we discussed whether the intelligence warranted having troops at the capitol. that was the issue. the judgment at that issue was no, the intelligence did not warrant that. if the chief or any other security leader had expressed doubt about our readiness, i would not have hesitated to request the national guard. >> we have also heard from the chief of the capitol police. he said his officers did all they could and he put the blame on the lack of intelligence pr
