i believe that's the cabin we're looking at from the knbc helicopter. a short time later there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect. sheriff s.w.a.t. team is on scene. two law enforcement officers are being airlifted to a local hospital with unknown injuries. that's our first official word as to what's going on up there in the san bernardino mountains. >> let me ask you about christopher dorner, the man they're chasing right now. does he have any family members? anyone that might be brought in to try to speak out, to talk him out of his fight? >> he has -- his mother he's referred to in -- actually who -- according to law enforcement may own property in the area, up around big bear. he also has a sister. he refers to his manifesto to hi relations with both his mother and sister as having been destroy by what he went through by his dismissal from the lapd and the severe depression he suffered after it. >> it soames to me this man has a lot of trouble he's in now because killing a police officer as you say is a capital crime

. >>> take a look at this bizarre moment captured by news chopper 4 by knbc in los angeles. you see the man in this car? he's sacking something out of a balloon, then attaches it to some kind of canister in the passenger seat, fills it up, then gets something out of it again. >> is he sucking on helium? >> according to reports, that's nitrous oxide. police expected this man of driving under the influence. they tried to pull him over. this man, who's identified by police as 24-year-old jorge sanchez, led officers on a slow-speed chase for ten minutes. police then had to put out stop sticks, which you see hanging out from under this car. and if you notice, police in full-on gear come up to the car with their guns drawn and watch what happens next. you see that he is struck with something, kind of collapses over into the passenger seat. according to reports, police fired in his direction with a low-impact bb gun. doesn't cause serious injuries, but did kind of get him under control. another officer goes to the other side of the car. they bust out the driver's side window. they

our friend, chuck henry, has been angering much of the coverage for local station knbc all afternoon long. he is with us from big bear via the telephone. chuck, what's it like there? >> brian, you would be interested to know, this cabin, much like the kind you would find at any ski resort, it is split level, is less than two football fields. in fact, i would estimate a football field and a half from where the police had set up their command post at a ski resort. right now, they are evacuating the people on the ski resort. there are a lot of anxious parents trying to get their kids who came up here to snowboard today and they can't get to them. san bernadino sheriffs have really cordoned off this area. sheriffs are in the home right now, going through it. as i say, it would look like a typical ski resort, like a chalet would you find at most any resort. we just received late word that down on highway 39, one of three ways in and out of big bear that there was a second shooting involving officers and we understand that one, possibly two officers, have been hit. brian? >> chuck henry re

>> our friends at knbc here in los angeles are reporting that law enforcement officials tell them theuence of events was something like this. they broke windows, approached the house, broke windows, fired tear gas in. used some sort of communication system, whether a loud speaker or something, we don't know, to tell dorner the place was surrounded and he should give himself up. they heard nothing so they used an armored bearcat to break down walls. in that process they heard a gunshot from inside and then a fire broke out. now we don't know what caused that fire to break out. was it a tear gas canister that went in? was it as they were breaking walls, a propane gas tank which the owner did have in the cabin, there might have been a spark. once the fire started they decided it was not safe to go in and to let the fire burn itself out. >> with the suspect shooting at the police through the cabin up until that time? >> they said there is some confusion when the shooting started, but the only thing they got back out of that cabin was gunfire. they say there was no communication out from t
