knbc is on the scene there. how about we listen in for just a bit here, this is our affiliate outside los angeles. let's listen to their coverage. >> i'm wondering and waiting to find out -- this is a residential area, if there are homes in the area that may be told to be on lockdown because this shooter ran up the hill towards a hiking trail, towards an elementary school which we now know, highlands elementary and rosedale elementary in santa clarita are on lockdown because of the proximity of the high school. the kids as you mentioned, meagan, look pretty calm right now and i'm sure hoping to go home and give their parents a really big hug. >> yeah. it's going to take a little time there. you pretty much said it all daniella. these students most likely will be questioned. definitely different from when i went to high school. you can see all these students, all on their cell phone, most likely texting their parents, letting their parents know that they are okay. so that is good, that they're able to relay that

again, law enforcement sources that have talked to nbc news, myself, pete williams, eric leonard at knbc, have said that the gunman is dead. as far as a motive, at this point still trying to sort out the crime scene. trying to security search warrants or get the search warrants so they can get more information and background on this student. he's 15 or 16 years old, and is a student at saugus high school. at this point, still unfolding. still trying to chase strands of this investigation. >> do we know how law was able to -- law enforcement was able to locate theis young man? >> as with everything, initial reports from the scene where people see somebody -- according to the early tweets, it was a male asian dressed in black clothing. there were reports that after the shooting from a nearby elementary school that at a home -- there's other reports that he was found at the school location. that's another piece of the puzzle that will hopefully be put together in the next hour or so when the sheriff and others address the media. >> andy, hold on for a second. we want to bring in connecticut

we have been monitoring coverage of our station in los angeles, knbc and obviously big concern rightrmation. >> i'm told that we now have been told by authorities in california they're saying seven people have been injured. they're saying that's the number they're using. seven gunshot victims. but again, that number is subject to change. these numbers typically change as the minutes go by because partly because of the reporting through the system, the law enforcement system, but partly because as they work their way through the school, they may find yet other victims. that's just the way these things unfold. so we will see if these numbers change, they may go up or down. >> this is in an area that was affected by the brushfires a couple of weeks ago and the focus on the shooting that occurred at the saugus high school in santa clarita, about an hour's north drive of los angeles. as pete noted this shooting happened earlier this morning. there they have an idea who the suspect is, but they don't know where he is. reported to be a 15-year-old and so there is that hunt going on at the s
