i'm standing at the intersection of kneeland and harrison. we're about two blocks west from the actual water main break itself, but take a look at all of this. this is where traffic is being diverted to. all that standing water continues to flow. a lot of traffic now being snarled, as you can see. this is make thoroughfare. they're now blocking off, traffic being diverted at hair isn't and kneeland. on the other side, it's being stopped at stewart. this is creating a traffic people try to get in for work. it's happening at the height of rush hour, people trying to get into tufts medical center, as well, as children's hospital for their jobs. take a look at video from the scene of the water main break itself at washington street. that entire section flooded. this happened around just about after 5:00 a.m. and so they have been trying to clean it up. this still however at this point, this traffic is being blocked and traffic being told to go the other direction. so if you are cin aware of. try to avoid this area if you can. that's the latest li

. >> reporter: heavy smoke on kneeland street in chinatown this morning. firefighters scrambling to the scene. buildings were being evacuated. >> i have come here from new zealand. and so, yeah it's been a long journey. injust got here yesterday on a red-eye flight. i was trying to get a bit of shut-eye. i'm being told to get out. >> reporter: the fires sparked by this water main break just after 5:00 this morning. sending thousands and thousands of gallons of water cascading down the street. the water seeping into the man holes which shortstopped out several electrical lines underground. through the morning, crews worked to douse the flames and deal with water in the basements of several buildings and also fix the water main itself. >> boston, out of all the major municipalities, actually, has a very low rate of water but we are constantly renovating, rehabilitatings, replacing mains. >> reporter: again, this is washington street and steward streets here in chinatown. the concern here is there is still a lot of water in a lot of basements and businesses h
