and, you know, let him know if i see anybody. and so he -- he's connected me with hamilton. who is running the wilson center. and, you know, i just -- i clicked with lee hamilton. i got this job. here's this guy who's a former congressman from indiana now running a think tank. couldn't be more different from me as a new yorker but kind of dispositionally had a very similar kind of pragmatic view of the world that i ended up, you know, developing. and so i always tell people, like, i -- that was a chance to take. i was in new york. i could see where that would lead. but i took it -- moved down to washington, went to work for this guy lee hamilton, set up in a new city where i didn't know anybody and six months after i went to work for him, he got appointed vice chair of the 9/11 commission, suddenly this job, was a good job, but kind of in the quiet think tank area of the world was caught up in the big events. someone i was lucky to work for a democrat who was appointed to the 9/11 commission and then the iraq study group, so i go

so, you know, i don't really -- i don't know. i don't think anybody knows at this point whether this is going to all flame out and we'll just be left with, you know, the same old economy we had which for the last 25 years wages have been flat. or be, you know, this automation of robots and gig economy and we're already using technology for just-in-time scheduling where they can now know exactly when their customers are going to be there, so they tell their employees i only need you, you know, two days from now, and i can't tell you your schedule two weeks from now. you know, you just have to be on call, basically. you have no life. you need to be ready to come in at a moment's notice. you can't plan childcare. i mean, so the technology's already being used in some ways that i think are degrading the quality of jobs. whether it will ever reach the level of, you know, which i fear it could, we'll have to see. ?rsh -- i think we don't want to ignore the possibilities though, because, you know, some -- there are things going on that
