they're going into kochi which has been pounded by torrential rainfall.ow a foot and a half of rainfall across that area. and the storm hasn't even made it in. all these bands are going to continue to wrap around. we could easily see another 100 to 200 millimeters of water. that is going to be a problem here. and again, this area is just completely saturated, cannot take any more water, so it won't take much falling from the sky to get us into trouble here. one of the areas vulnerable here, kochi, because of the steep terrain, just like what happened with iselle in hawaii, all that water falling quickly down the mountain and could be flooding at kochi here. and as i mentioned, they've already had upwards of 400 millimeters of rainfall in just the last couple of days. so more is going to be on the way. there's your computer model forecast, honing in on this. and then the system weakens. but again, i think the big threat will be the rainfall. a lot of questions over the last several days on twitter and in the newsroom. the difference, hurricane, typhoon, ba

kochi, japan, roughly 30,000 people in this region have been advised to evacuate just because of the threat of rivers bursting their banks. we know the region experiencing power outages. a remote area of kochi some 78 children were stranded in a summer camp because of mountain landslides that took place in that region. of course, hundreds of homes have received damage as well because of the amount of water that is on the ground. so the last thing you want to see is another disturbance beginning to come in here. and just to put all this in scale, you take a look at what's happened so far through the first four days of the month of august, already top fifth wettest portion -- or wettest month in august history for our friends across kochi, japan, and the city we talked about getting about 600 millimeters of rainfall, 20 inches, second wettest august on record. and again, 26 days left in the month of august and you're in the top two when it comes to wet periods across this region. there is another typhoon just to your south, and this is exactly what's concerning because we know this sto

for kochi and fukuoka rain continues for tuesday and wednesday. we have heavy rainfall into the philippines. high pressure driving up the warm weather into tokyo. that is going to keep dry conditions with low 30s in central japan. wet for seoul, shanghai and very warm conditions for northern china, 33 degrees in beijinbeij we have this massive low pressure system continuing over the scandinavian peninsula. we have a cold front. because of that poland saw hail on sunday. it looks like this is going to bring more wet weather for the northern portions of europe staying relatively dry to the south especially to the balkans where they need to start drying out. looks like drier conditions there. berlin and paris a chance for rain and maybe seeing showers especially for the northern portions of the scandinavian peninsula and scattered showers to the south. we wrap things up with a look at north america. we can see clouds billowing up. that is a low pressure system responsible for producing large hail. 11 centimeter diameter hail and strong wind gusts ove

look at kochi japan since august 1. 1200 millimeters of rainfall. that's three times as much as they normally get in the entire month of august and it's only 10 august. that's their wettest august ever and their third rainiest month since we've been keeping records here. this is an incredible event for kochi. and mt. torigata. 6 1/2 feet of rain in ten days. that's going to take a while to recede. 130 to 150 kilometer per hour wind gusts. the rain was coming down from the mountains and sideways at times because of the gusty winds. we have this front now that's picked up our typhoon, now tropical storm and we're about to be done with it. just a little more rainfall. tokyo, you'll be seeing the heaviest of the rain as this begins to scoot off to the north and east. quiet relatively in the tropics. nothing doing here. that's good news for our friends in the western pacific. still keeping an eye on julio. well north of hawaii. iselle brought all the rain to them. julio continues to head off to the north and west. no twin hurricanes for hawaii. >> ivan,

kochi prefecture across japan we had a landslide take place.kable rainfall totals we've touched on here, exceeding, almost quadrupling the average, wettest august on record. that is 47 inches. the 1200 millimeters. now the record heat taking a toll on this region. in fact, tab laith the last 18 days across tokyo, temperatures one to three celsius or about 2 to 5 degrees fahrenheit above average. july 1 celsius to 3 degrees above average. and look at the video coming out of portions of japan. we know nearly 10,000 people in just the last month have been admitted to hospitals across portions of japan. the vast majority of them being the elderly dealing with these temperatures generally in the upper 30s, or nearly 100 degrees fahrenheit across tokyo about 33 people have lost their lives as well in this region. and again the heat certainly not going to be letting off anytime soon, at least in the foreseeable future across that part of the world. but want to touch on what's happening across northwestern europe this morning because we do have a prett

then of course the wettest august ever in kochi, japan. picking up 57 inches where they normally only get 14 1/2 in the entire month here. and we're almost through with it but not quite done. take a look at these draltic pictures if you haven't seen it. the land just giving way. and you can imagine the destruction there. just had no chance because of all that rainfall that came in. now, in this part of the world we are able to put out warnings. because of all the rainfall and because of the topography we know when there is going to be heavy landslides. but sometimes you just cannot get people out of the way in time. just like in the united states. you get the tornado warnings out, but sometimes you just can't get out of the way fast enough. and this is the issue now. the recovery efforts continue with heavy rain that has been ongoing. we have additional rain that's going to be coming in, anywhere from 25 to 50 millimeters of rainfall, which normally wouldn't be a lot but in this situation it's going to be too much. and unfortunately, more
