chris holmstrom from koin tv. thank you, chris. late today, president obama was asked about the shooting. >> the country has to do some soul-searching about this. this is becoming the norm, and we take it for granted in ways that, as a parent, are terrifying to me, and i-- i am prepared to work with anybody, including responsible sportsmen and gun to craft some solutions. but right now, it's not even possible to get even the mildest restrictions through congress, and that's... we should be ashamed of that. >> pelley: after the massacre in newtown, connecticut, in december of 2012, the president said, "we've endured too many of these tragedies." bob orr is our justice correspondent. bob, in the 77 weeks since the president said that, there have been 74 shootings in schools. what's going on? >> reporter: well, scott, it's a complex problem and a difficult answer. for starters, the number of active shooter cases it just doesn't seem like they're on the rise. they are on the rise. the workplace is the most common target but schools and

we're looking at pictures from koin, our network news affiliate. they have these pictures for us.get to where they are interviewing students. >> the vice principal came in later and announced that it was an active lockdown and it was really not to move or anything. and then when the cops did come, they lined us up single file and then they had a few s.w.a.t. members at the doors of the entrance making a barrier and then they told us to run across the parking lot through the cop cars. >> reporter: walk us through those moments where you don't know what's going on. are you hearing anything? what's happening in that space of that time? >> i was hearing cops and i was hearing a lot of ambulances, cop cars, crazy, insane amounts of cop cars. it was tons of cop cars. and when i got to the door and they said run, i was, like, okay, i have to run like i'm trying to surve. that's pretty scary running across a parking lot and being able to just get shot at if someone was out there. so we were running and as we were running, there was cop cars at the entrance of the parking lot and cops stan

koin. let's listen. >> what have you guys been doing here at this kind of staging area that has been kind of a makeshift staging area? what have deputies told you about any information about the students or any of the victims? >> they won't tell us anything. they said they can't discuss the matter. just children -- [inaudible] >> you guys have been communicating how with your son? has it been via phone? what time did he first text you? what was that message? >> after i heard about the high school, i texted him.
