california kondor is the largest land bird in north america.adult can weigh as much as 31 pounds with a wingspan up to 10 feet. thousands of the birds once called california home. but a now banned pesticide, ddt destroyed the eggs and the birds almost disappeared. >> population low is 22 birds in 1982. >> kelly sorenson with s.with california wildlife society. they've been working to return the california condor to the wild. they bought 80 acres to provide a safe home from condors. the birds come from captive breeding program autos we ready the condors raised in zoos for the wild. >> it's a slow process. ne don't lay eggs until they're five years old f they live to 20, they may only lay five eggs during that time. out of a total of 404 birds across the southwest. but success is not without challenges. not every bird live autos it's hard to lose any bird after spending this time but he is splishl a breeder. think live a long time, reproduce slowly. it's hard to lose an adult. >> in november, condor 318 died. >> a bird came in with lead poisoning
