. >> author david eax -- axe and illustrator tim hamilton talk about joseph kony in africa. this is about an hour. >> my name is david axe, and i want to start out by making it very clear this is a comic book we're talking about. the term we use is graphic novel,. it tends to throw a lot of people, but for many years now folks have been using comic books to do reporting. tim and i are not the first. but it's still a relatively small field. before i talk about the book specifically, and i'm going to be brief because there are other folks that talk and then we're going to have a discussion, i want to take you back about three years. so the 2009-2010 time frame, where i was. had spent the previous five years reporting mostly from iraq and afghanistan and a smattering of other conflict zones. but the sort of dominant theme of my reporting, looking at it as an american writing for, writing for an american audience. the dominant theme was what we'd done wrong or how we were screwing things up. the iraq war, obviously, began with lies and mistakes of epic proportion. and besides be

joseph kony -- >> sorry, you go. >> reporter: well, joseph kony has been on a murderous rampage that'seople and building one of the biggest armies of child soldiers in history. kony started out in northern uganda, but his campaign has spread to four countries. and he's now operating in this vast area in the center of africa. we traveled there to report on one of the biggest manhunts that's ever taken place. you don't have to spend much time here to understand why it's so hard to find joseph kony. it's as isolated and unforgiving as it gets. the undergrowth so thick, every step is a battle. when our producer joined this ugandan tracking team, they had been searching for kony and his army called the lord's resistance army, or lra, for three months, tracking them the way you would an animal. >> right now we are trying to find the enemy tracks. >> footprints. >> the lra. >> reporter: this 27-year-old's sole mission for the past three years has been finding kony, and he's one of the ugandan army's top trackers. the footprints are the first sign they've seen of kony's army in six days. as th

and why has joseph kony so difficult to find?e for more than 25 years. and even though he's on the run, even though his army is down to just a few hundred, there are few people ever who know as well as he does how to survive in that austere environment. many of his soldiers that we spoke to talked about starving almost to death, that they would do things like bury messages in the ground, and that will be near three hills by this tree, et cetera, et cetera, and that's how they'll communicate. and it doesn't matter if it takes them six months to go to that particular hole in the ground and get a message. they're an incredibly disciplined force and know how to use the jungle to their advantage. as the colonel said, he's not a memorable human being but a memorable adversary. >> what will they do with him if and when they catch him? >> those are also good questions, gayle. if they capture him, kony may be killed when they try to capture him. it's unlikely that he's just going to surrender, give up and go easily. there is -- you know,

to the kony lra phenomena and call for his arrest among other measures. it received tens of mills of -- millions of hits online and i would was both appreciated for how widely it got the word out especially among young audiences but also how it may have simplified the issue or not fully portrayed the complexity of the issue and so i was wondering in term of the publication and advocacy what did you think of that effort? .. well meaning and basically my attitude is anything that gets a lot of people who are otherwise distracted to pay any attention whatsoever to this problem is a good thing. of course it shouldn't be a fantasy. these guys were making stuff up that would be problematic but they are not. so go ahead and criticize him all you want but these guys with their videos reach more people and got more people to care about the lra in the congolese people than any other reporter or human rights advocates in the world. and it's not -- they did it up good and so good for them. i can't criticize them. >> thank you both. it was really nice talking to you.

that's the kind of ruthless madman we're dealing with in joseph kony. and believe me, president obama has really put a target on his back. we are going after this man. we have driven him out of uganda. we believe he is in the central africa republic. i saw firsthand while visiting there what we are doing to make sure his rein of -- reign of terror comes to an end quickly. it turns out kony's reign of terror has been fed by the chinese demand for ivory. he is poaching the elephants, slaughtering them in the area and using this ivory to keep his men in arms and their reign of terror continue. the increasing american jobs through greater exports to africa act is something everyone should support. it's good for the u.s. company, helps u.s. businesses create jobs, is good for u.s. foreign policy, keeps america in a position of global leadership, and it's good for the people of africa. by making superior american products and services the standard in their future. i urge my colleagues to sign on to support this important effort. while we wait and do nothing,
