first of all i was born in south korea, fluent in korea and i come from separated families. meaning families on my side have been separated into north korea although we are from south korea, during the war so really the horrific heartbreakers division of korea has always been in my family. to have a personal i guess, it's more of a heartbreak the really, my mother's brother was lost during the war. the same can happen to my father. when you think about north korea, a lot is happening. this happened to a million plus families. so i think for us it's a heartbreak. north korea is a really big heartbreak. i think i want to tell that story. this is a very personal story. which is i think why it's an investigative account but also in some sense i wanted to relate that sense of what it means to have people -- 70 million people, two-thirds their, they been families for 5000 years and they're separated for ever. the war ended in a 53 and here we are in 2014. they never saw each other again. so i think that when wanted to relate to my kids, i wanted some sort of i guess a bond or unde
