korea. it is safe to say, and everybody reiterated this today, that the u.s. republic of korea alliance is stronger than ever. and thanks to the agreement that defense minister han and secretary hagel signed yesterday , it is about to become even stronger. this new agreement is going to serve as a blueprint for how and when south korea will assume wartime operational control of the combined forces. the goal of the agreement is to ensure that as south korea continues to build up its own defense capabilities, our combined forces will be ready and able to provide the best possible defenses for the korean people. our shared security is at the heart of the u.s.-korean alliance. ultimately, i want to make it clear that the alliance is about much more than that. it is the linchpin of security, stability, and prosperity in northeast asia and, increasingly, beyond. today, for instance, we discussed a number of important issues where our partnership is not only value will not central. -- valuable but central. at the top of the list is the subject of north korea. secretar

president obama's trip to asia, specifically on the way to the president's visit to south korea, there was a u.s. military plane that got held up in tie labd. it was not able to take off for south korea. one of the secret service agents had gone missing. he had gone missing in a brothel in thailand. rather than hold up the whole plane, a secret service supervisor agreed to stay behind in thailand. he was drunk in the aforementioned thai brothel. the secret service shipped him home, flew him commercial, apparently at great expense to the american taxes he report thrill faced no punishment. and then came the very serious incident in november, 2011. a man parked six football fields away managed to hit the upstairs residence of the white house while the president's daughter and mother-in-law were at home. we now know just how much the secret service bund bungled that experience. it's important to note where the shooter parked. that's where the shooter was located that night. turns out, in the months before that shooting, secret service officials pulled that agent away from the white house grounds. a

korea's mysterious leader kim jong-un. and now some troubling new moves by his country have u.s. ng to figure out what north korea is up to right now. our global affairs correspondent is working this for us at the state department. what are you finding out? >> reporter: kim jong-un is reappearing just as north korea is undertaking a dramatic worldwide diplomatic charm offensive. but it's unclear if kim is offering an olive branch or trying to shield his regime from international action. in new photos, kim jong-un inspects military drills. it's a more commanding image than the one he conveyed ten days ago, emerging after a five-week absence and walking with a cane. fueling speculation about his health and grip on power. the mystery deepened this week when pyongyang suddenly called for a u.s. government plane to take home american jeffrey, arrested in may for leaving a bible at a club. north korea suggested an apology from the u.s. could free the remaining americans. >> our hope is they will recognize the good will that could be built and the gesture that it would offer to the world
