i want to get straight to cnn business correspondent alison kosik who is on the floor of the new york stock exchange. what's pushing the market up today? >> reporter: well, one thing i did notice, dana, president trump didn't tweet about the markets. maybe that could have something to do with it. otherwise, more willing to dip their toes back in with the rally of the dow. 500 points. triple digits this morning and then dipped into the anythingne and rallying again. anyone's guess where stocks will wind up. the reality is the same worries that were weighing on wall street just days ago continue to weigh on wall street. that's the fed's path of interest rate hikes. the unresolved trade situation between the u.s. and china. what the earnings picture is going to look like next year for corporate americans. it's expected to be slower than this year and then, of course, years about slowing economic growth globally and one thing added to wall street's plate. political risk. every time the president tweets and attacks fed chair powell, we certainly see the market react negatively. that's some

alison kosik is at the stock market now. the market often finishes with rally, but this is not a typical december. >> reporter: it certainly not a typical december. even with the gains this week, it looks like december will go down as the worst performing month for stocks since 1931. that was during the great depression. hold that in your hat for a bit. as for today, we've been watching stocks struggle to found direction. at the moment, a triple-digit gain for the dow. anything can happen. we have seen sentiment change on a dime, we saw that yesterday when we saw the 900-point swing for the dow. there's a lot weighing on wall street as far as that cloud of uncertainty, an economic slowdown. some of the recent fed moves worrying wall street as well, unresolved trade situation between the u.s. and china is another worry. then the uncertainty in washington, not just policy-wise, not just the government shutdown but whether or not fed chair jay powell can keep his job in the next year. so these worries are keeping wall street on

alison kosik has the latest at the new york stock exchange. >> i'm seeing red arrows. the rally that the dow had quickly fizzling out. it is interesting to see the downward momentum creep back in as we see the dow and the s&p get close to bear market territory, a drop of 20% from the highs. there is a lot of pessimism in the market, political risk is now added on to the list of worries for wall street and for the worries about the fed pfs rate hiking path and global economic growth slowing down and earnings growth that is expected to slow down next year and worries about how the u.s. and china trade situation will be worked out. you pile that on and then add the political risk. usually in the past political risk meaning tweets from president trump or crazy comments about fed chair would be ignored by the market, now is becoming part of the trading action. that is really becoming an unpredictable part of the trade. there is one thing that the market hates and that is uncertainty. each time you see the president go on this tirade against powell or there are rumors about

for that, let's turn to cnn's alison kosik, who is at the new york stock exchange.taking notice not just of what the treasury secretary did yesterday, but what the president tweeted about today while the markets were opened. what happened? >> exactly. during the session, when the president tweeted, blaming the federal reserve, i watched those losses on the dow accelerate, so the dow was actually on an upswing, but when that tweet came in around 10:45, it then went on a downward decline until the closing bell at 1:00 p.m., because we have a holiday-shortened receptisessio. for months, trump has been complaining about the fed, using fed chief powell as a pinata. but his latest complaint made the shornt pdshortened trading anything but sweet. and mnuchin's calls weren't interpreted as a friendly move a source says that the ceos were baffled, that the call came out of nowhere, with mnuchin asking about whether there were any liquidity issues with these banks. for the record, the banks said no. investors tried to spend the day trying to wrap their heads around why mnuchi

make sense of everything that is happening on the stock exchange, cnn business correspondent alison kosik. the dow has either gained or lost more than 350 points in seven of the past eight trading sessions. what is behind all this volatility? >> just to take your stats one step further, there have been 18 trading sessions in december. in 11 of those the dow has made a triple digit move. that shows just how volatile things have gotten here for stocks. you look at the six-month time frame, the dow has lost thousands of points. you look at the year, all of the major indices are in the red. the dow is down 9% for the year, the s&p 500 down 9.5%, the nasdaq down more than 7%. all those gains wiped out, volatility certainly adding to the pressure. to get more now on why this is happening, let's go to alan valdez, senior partner with silver bear. thanks for joining us today. we're going to look right over there and talk to the folks about why the volatility and is it going to end? >> one of the main factors is uncertainty. wall street hates uncertainty and we have uncertainty all over the board,

let's get over to business correspondent alison kosik taking a look at that. i'm going to talk to rona in a second. we'll going to alison on the floor of the stock exchange. >> i'm seeing a lot of investors trying to wrap their heads around why treasury secretary steve mnuchin made these calls individually, one by one, to these bank ceos on a sunday. kind of reminiscent during the financial crisis when you had these investment brokers making these liquidity calls on sunday to preempt the market action on that next monday. so this is kind of causing some fears here in the market. as you can see playing out here on the dow, the dow down 368 points. if steve mnuchin was looking to calm the markets, i would say this was certainly a misfire. ceos are calling this call totally baffling. they find it puzzling and largely unnecessary because as they told the secretary, there is no liquidity problem with each of their banks. now, this can be troublesome for the market because it can cause this panic because the thinking is, does the trump administration know that there

let's get straight to cnn's alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. question. how did this happen? >> the incredible rebound really coming as some investors have been saying that the selling we've been seeing over the past couple of months has been overdone. you look at the dow, it's lost more than 5,000 points since its peak in october. so some are questioning, why should the dow be losing this much since economic data in the u.s. doesn't point to a looming recession? but the reality is, the political risks in the market, they have actually heightened and affected confidence in the market. i'm talking about president trump's tweets and statements where he's been attacking fed chairman jay powell. they moved the markets lower. they drove them down and undermined confidence. and will continue to, because it's an unpredictable nature, continues to be a threat to the stability of the market. clearly, volatility is key here. we saw the market plunge 650 points on monday. now surging over 1,000 points. it's anybody's guess where the market goes tomorrow. d
