our kpix 5 exclusive multiple sources telling us that.porter christin ayers confirming the information. >> reporter: that information is coming from some high ranking sources in the state. transportation hierarchy is telling us that the bridge will indeed open on labor day weekend as originally planned. the governor threw his support behind a labor day opening. but the call to actually open the bridge will not be official until the three-man bridge oversight committee votes in a public meeting tomorrow morning. that committee however is expected to vote yes. we have learned there will be a sort of modest ceremony to celebrate the opening of the bridge. a far cry from the marathon planning from earlier. a huge large public celebration was planned at one point. there will be a smaller ceremony and that if in fact there is a large-scale public ceremony at all that will come at a later date. the big news a short time ago the bridge will open on labor day weekend according to some well placed sources who say that committee will in fact vote to

kpix 5. >>> a marin county jury is now deciding the case of an accuse serial killer.e this afternoon joseph naso wrapped up his closing argument that he started friday. he is defending himself against charges that he murdered four women between 1978 and 1994. the case was did that for the second time in a week. the judge had to determine whether the jury had been tainted by a sign referencing naso on a truck park outside. it was written by the brother of an alleged victim. >> i didn't want to throw any interference. now it says he is being charge which probably everybody in the state and county knows. >> the jury started deliberating about 3:15 this afternoon. naso could get the death penalty if convict 0. >>> california prisoners who have refused to eat for seven weeks are getting their food handed to them. t a federal judge allowing the prisoners to be force fed. strike started july 8th. nearly 70 prisoners have refused all meals since the strike began. inmates are protesting the conditions of solitary confinements. >>> new jersey governor chris christie signed a le

kpix 5 reporter mark kelly is at the toll plaza. a lot of people, mark, trying to be among the last across the bridge. traffic is light. there too? >> reporter: it is light at the toll plaza going over the bay bridge. of course, the plan is let's get all these cars off the bridge so we could start demolition on the old road as soon as possible as early as tonight. pretty soon this place is going to be crawling with construction crews. here's a peek at crews hard at work on the new bridge hours before the old closes to the public for good. soon it will be time to really get to work under a five-day home stretch deadline and a lot of manpower is expected. >> in terms of trucks bringing in asphalt and then trucks taking debris and material out, it could be around 6,000. >> reporter: those 6,000 trucks of material will go from pleasanton to the bridge using 580. officer daniel hill with chp admits 6,000 is a lot of truckloads on the road. but they will only be traveling during specific times. not all day long. >> we will try as we do ev

. >>> this is kpix 5 news. >>> god evening.ve breaking news.at least one more person is dead in an already violent weekend in oakland. three separate shootings since friday night have now killed three people and wounded seven more. the latest one happened around 9:40 tonight near 72nd avenue in mcarthur boulevard. a woman was killed. a man is injured. and separate shooting this afternoon along telegraph avenue in oakland sent four part-time to the hospital. it start with a car break in. kpix 5's don knapp talked to witnesses who went after the suspect. >> it started as a car break in and should have ended when neighbors gave chase and recovered a weems stolen purse. about ten minutes later the thief came back and started chooting. >> the young woman's boyfriend, who was not shot, actually ran after him, chased him down. him and another bystander chased him down, took a photo so the police have a photo of the young man, and he came back, circled back, and went on and shot fire. >> two men and two women were wounded. one person i

kpix 5's ryan takeo breaks down the numbers. ryan. >>> reporter: they haven't had a raise in four years so we crunched the numbers to see how the latest bart proposal would affect the average bart worker. our example is this bart technician. he told us he makes $35 an hour. that's about $72,000 a year. under bart's plan, his 8% raids over 44 years with -- raise over 4 years would bring him to $78,000. the union plan would mean $87,000. but the union leader says the current proposal would hurt worker wallets. >> when in fact that 2% pay increase per year results in either a net zero or something less for our members. >> reporter: bart workers' salaries have been stagnant for four years. still, bart workers are the highest paid transit workers in the state and among the highest paid government workers in the bay area. we found out that the bart proposal would cost a technician $1,100 over the four- year contract. that's because he would pay 5% into his pension and 10% of his healthcare premium what's your response to that? >> the

thanks for coming by kpix 5. we're starting out with drizzle this morning almost to the point of light rain which is being reported in oakland. the numbers right now a bit warmer than yesterday. upper 50s and 60 degrees in fact in san jose. as we look at that low pressure spinning abeam san francisco and look at the clouds being ripped north over the sierra where they stand a 30% chance of light showers today and the radar at least indicating there's at least virga out there. for us plenty of low clouds to start out. we are going to be looking for things to remain persistently cloudy near the shoreline. as a result average numbers today as much as 13 degrees below normal. so expect another unseasonably cool day but there's changes in the look ahead and we'll have that coming up. but first let's get a bent metal update. >> there's not much. things are quiet now that we're past 5:00 a lot of the overnight roadwork at least in the clearing stages if not picked up altogether. earlier this morning at the bay bridge we

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is overlooking the old span where cars are crossing the bridge for the last time. nostalgic i guess for some, and for others, not so much. >> reporter: yeah. that is true. the old span here behind me and then the new span on the side of it, coming up fa week from at ad today we are going to see all that traffic flip-flop after the closure that begins tonight at 8 p.m. that is when crews are going to start demolishing part of the old bridge. the bridge's westbound approach that will make room for the temporary connector to the bike and pedestrian path. now, overnight and tomorrow, they will be grinding and paving the roadway and working on lighting and inspecting this span. on friday, crews will apply a polyester overlay on the tunnel. by saturday, demolition work should be wrapping up. sunday they will install that temporary bike pathway and work on striping into monday when they will install a barrier rail. and then clean everything up for the grand opening on tuesday morning. you ha

live in alameda, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >>> kpix 5's roberta gonzales is in mobile5 heading to san francisco from pleasanton this morning. roberta, how's the commute so far? >> reporter: yes. no problem at all. in fact, it's about a 45-minute drive from pleasanton all the way into san francisco. usually what you do is get on the 580/680 corridor. let me see if i can switch that up so you can see what i'm talking about. and that's what we're doing now. in fact, brian, you're going the wrong way. he is getting on 580 heading east towards livermore. actually we want to go 580 west towards oakland, brian. i'm already back seat driving here in the car. we're in mobile weather. usually again this is a 45- minute commute. we are going to take you, however, 580/680. we jump on 580, we head to the 238, the 238 to the 92, the 92 to the 880, the 880 to the 101 into san francisco. now, the last time they shut down the bay bridge, i took that commute and it took me about an hour 15. that was without a lot of traffic. now, so if you are heading from the tri-valley which many of our commuters do, then agai
