kpix 5's kristin ayers was at the scene of the five-acre fire. >>reporter: hector watches in disbelief, his two dogs trapped inside as flames burden of proof near feet -- flames burn mere feet from his home. the fast-moving 5-alarm fire sparked west of 680 and leapt across the freeway. it was driven, firefighters say, by gusting wind and extreme drought conditions. >> we're seeing higher energy releases out of the fire, out of the grass than we have in the past. >>reporter: helicoptering hovered overhead trying to douse the flames. neighbors watched, worried and watered the weeds themselves as the flames got close. >> too close for comfort. >>reporter: brittany gerrary a is one of four people -- 40 people forced to evacuate. she says the home where her boyfriend's mother lives was overrun by high, dry weeds. they were whacking those weeds when the fire broke out, gobbled up the weeds and engulfed the shed. >> it was heartbreaking and i was really scared. >>reporter: so was hector, standing by anxiously, his two dogs still trapped inside. >> i'm g

surprised the whole thing happened right where i was. >> reporter: cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> kpix 5 sources say the feds started investigating chamberlain after another man was arrested in sacramento county about a month ago. joe vazquez has that part of the story. >>> reporter: the feds aren't saying what evidence linked chamberlain to sacramento county. but a source tells us that connection had authorities searching chamberlain's apartment this weekend. chamberlain wasn't home. the fbi conducted a nationwide manhunt for him calling him armed and dangerous, but they said he never actually threatened anyone. hours before his arrest, chamberlain had posted online what appeared to be a good-bye note. quote, so much was broken from this past year and a half, i guess it was just insurmountable and the time is up. but chamberlain is alive and well. this is him with his head down in the back of a police car being driven into the federal courthouse. there are still a lot of questions. what exactly was found in his apartment? what about the explosives the feds said he might have in his possession?

[ screaming ] >> they are using their sheer numbers to intimidate, assault and rob other people and it is pretty scary. >> reporter: over the weekend dozens if not hundreds of teenagers got more than rowdy at the bay fair mall food court. >> it was a lot of commotion, police were up here and then the security guard was trying to get them off of the premises. >> reporter: police tried to break up the group but they ended up running back and forth from the mall to bay fair bart station. some mall employees say they have had to shut down the stores in order for police to escort these teens out. san leandro police are gathering surveillance video and hope they can identify some of the teens involved in the incident. at one point, a teenager shot himself in the foot trying to get away. as bart police were helping that kid, another group chased down two other ki

kpix 5's simon perez is in fairfield. what's the latest?reporter: well, we're here on the scene right there at 680 where it meets 80 heading towards sacramento. right in this little cul-de- sac, in this little corner is where the fire started. a little after 3:00 this afternoon. you can see now the crews have got it pretty much under control from what we can see. they are basically in mop-up stage. the cal fire helicopters have not been by in at least 15, 20 minutes now. so it does look as though they do have a lot of it under control. you can see from some video from earlier that it was out of control earlier. when we showed up, flames were shooting about 30, 40 feet up into the air. one house is gone as we speak. we do know that several neighborhoods several streets had to be evacuated including the homes and the people who live on ritchie road. there was a fear that it was going to get on 680 as well and that's why they shut down 680 northbound for a time. it did re-open at about 5:20 this afternoon. now, this fire because of the wind as

kpix 5's -- year? kpix 5's brian webb reports the report comes out tomorrow from the ntsb. >> reporter: the crash landing on a clear day july # 6th, 2013 left a black eye on asiana airlines and the emergency response teams of -- san francisco. flight 214 from south korea with a crew of 12 and 291 passengers on board. the pilot was experienced. but in training to fly the 777 with an instructor sitting by his side. for some reason, five miles out, the plane slowed way too much on approach. so much there was not time to perform a go around for a second landing attempt. asiana airlines officials admit it was the flight crew's failure to monitor proper air speed but also blames boeing for the airplane's complex automated controls. boeing and asiana are still at odds over how much blame lies with the other. and the ever increasing complexity of airplane computers and controls in general will also be examined in the report. brian webb, kpix 5. >> the plane was traveling 119 miles an hour when it slammed into

kpix 5's betty yu has been talking with yahye abdi for several weeks now. he told her he decided to share his story because he feels misunderstood. >> reporter: did you think you had any other options but to jump on a plane? >> no. >> reporter: yahye stowed away on a plane from san jose to maui for 5 1/2 hours. he was determined to get halfway around the world. for the first time, he talks about that journey using google chat. the 15-year-old said he crouched in the wheel well and remembers covering his ears as the plane took off. he says he was basically sitting on the shell of the plane. >> it was like above the clouds. i could see like there was a little hole. >> reporter: you could see the hole. you could see the ocean and clouds below you? >> yeah. >> reporter: was it scary? >> no. >> reporter: he says he passed out and doesn't recall the flight. surveillance video from the maui airport captures those moments after he woke up and dropped to the tarmac. he says he was dizzy, hungry, dehydrated and couldn't hear anything. was your vision okay? was it cle

reporting in gilroy, i'm mark sayre, kpix 5. >> and dr.baldione is scheduled to be arraigned on monday. >>> sunnyvale police and the santa clara county d.a. are searching for evidence following an officer-involved shooting of a murder suspect. police went to arrest 53-year- old glenn grigs thursday at his home near fair oaks and mod avenues. now, grigs was wanted in connection with the murder of maldi frankmont. a s.w.a.t team entered grigs' home search forg evidence. he made a vecial threat before brandishing what looked like a rifle. officers commanded him to drop the weapon. he did not comply. the weapon turned out to be a bb gun. >> officers fired one less than lethal rubber baton which was infective and mr. grigs raised the weapon and the officers fired and struck mr. grigs. >> glenn grigs died at the hospital. frankmont was reported missing last year. her body has never been found. police aren't saying why this is a murder case and not a missing persons investigation. she and grigs apparently lived together at the home on fair oaks a

kpix 5's anne makovec joins us with the latest.s could cause a lot of parking headaches for drivers here in the city. >> reporter: yeah. so we are expecting some angry voices to be heard. this is one of the bus stops in question. it's right by city hall and this is where there will be a public hearing at 10 a.m. to discuss the city's plan to share. first those techie commuter shuttles were freely using bus stops sometimes getting in the way of muni and making bus riders mad. but the city wants to work with them during an 18-month test period. the corporate shuttle also have to pay $1 a stop and that will raise an estimated $1.5 million a year. so to make room for them, muni wants to expand some bus stops and that means eliminating parking spaces. three spaces at this stop in the alamo square neighborhood. >> i think, you know, the parking is pretty competitive in this neighborhood already, so i don't think we really need another bus stop. >> reporter: she says finding a space here is already impossible. >> usually takes me about 45
