kpix 5's joe vazquez shows us the problem appears to be where the rubber meets the road. joe? >> reporter: ken, behind me you see that beautiful bright white span to the left. that's the new bay bridge heading into oakland. and on the right, that's the yerba buena treasure island span. right where they connect, that's where these fires have happened. >> this is actually an unusual set of circumstances for both these fires occur in relatively the same area. >> reporter: caltrans is still trying to figure it out how two fires could happen on the bay bridge in just three days. this is a snapshot of the first fire sent to us by a viewer. >> on monday evening, approximately 6 feet of steel was actually burned and damaged to a degree that we are not very clear yet as to what degree. >> reporter: the steel she is referring to is a rubber covering on top of the joints called seismic joints. the seal is a rubber covering. the seal caught fire monday night and a small portion was aflame again today. >> about noon or thereafter, one our engineers discovered the fire that was in relativel

you can see the plume of smoke on kpix 5. time lapse mode there it is to the east of lake berryessa. that's not rainfall. that's the smoke being picked up by our radar which is not too far. it's on the top of mount vaca only about 10 miles away from the actual fire. your fire forecast, the winds will change directions over the next 12 hours and set up a southwest-to-northeast wind. it will be a west-to-east wind. still gusty overnight tonight. gusting 15 to 20 miles per hour. the good news is, as high pressure makes its approach tomorrow, we will see the winds gradually relax and tomorrow will not be as windy as today. it will not be as windy as yesterday. the wind gusts will be down to 15 miles per hour. back out here live plenty of smoke being blown from the southwest to the northeast. it is still windy, but the wind will be less tomorrow as high pressure builds in. that's wonderful news for the firefighters trying to put a handle on this thing. the wind is not a friend of a fire like this. >> paul, thank you. >>> heading b

in hayward, devin fehely, kpix 5. >> and new at 6:00, kpix 5's len ramirez is learning new information about the killing went seconds that led up to it. >> reporter: veronica, the new details are from the hayward police department's minute by minute account of sergeant lunger's death a death that started with a routine traffic stop. at 3:14 a.m., officer lunger pulled over the white chevy silverado. a backup officer stood at the back of the suspect's pickup and heard sergeant lunger talking to someone through the driver's side window then a boo. the other officer opened fire and we know one shot went into and out of the car seat and police say into the side of mark estrada. sergeant lunger was pronounced dead at 3:48. at 4:05 a.m., the vehicle was found, bullet holes in it, a handgun and ammo. estrada's attorney had this to say about the mounting evidence. >> we are asking the press and the media just to reserve judgment until all the facts are in. then we can answer those questions. >> reporter: but there's more. investigators released this video wanting help tracking down who is in t

kpix 5's lisa chan is in our newsroom with more. good morning lisa. >> reporter: good morning, this interstate is the main route between california and arizona. and engineers will assess the tack to the bridge this morning. the damage is being blamed on heavy rains and flooding that shut down the freeway. a bridge 50 miles west of the arizona state line washed away. traffic headed toward arizona was forced to turn around and one driver was injured. the riverside county fire department had to extract that driver who crashed in the collapse. rain, thunder and lightning fell over southern california in a rare summer storm system. this caused power outages and downed trees and water rescues and beach closures. firefighters worked to keep mud out of half a dozen homes. >> there's firefighters out there as well as a lot of heavy equipment operators. that are trying to get that mud and debris up. we're working as quick as we can. >> reporter: these storms dropped as much as four inches of rain in some areas and forecasters are predicting m

kpix 5's kiet do with details on a homicide investigation. >> reporter: i'm kiet do in east san jose at a crime scene active for the morning. here's why. around 2:30 this morning, police officers on routine patrol spotted this tan colored mazda minivan that lost control went off the road up the sidewalk at the social security office on fontaine road at 101 and tully. the driver was taken to the hospital where they discovered he had one gunshot wound. he died about 45 minutes later. investigators have no motive or suspects. the gunman is still on the loose. there's been an uptick in violence. this is the fourth homicide in 2.5 weeks. on july 10sjpd started shipping personnel from the highly trained specialized units to work overnight in the hot spots in the city. >> with the additional resources on the streets we are hoping that will calm that and reduce some of the violence we see occurring but again, it is cause for for concern. we're dressing those issues. >> reporter: as far as the new surge of officers they will reevaluate at the end of summer. they hope it will work like it did
