the rain is showing up on kpix 5 hi-def doppler. let's zoom down to the santa clara mountains where we have the leading edge of some light rain that will impact the bay area beginning this evening and lasting through the night tonight. already a few drips at san jose mineta airport. futurecast says 11:00 the light rain becomes more widespread. it's going to pour overnight tonight. this will be the heaviest rain between midnight and 6:00 in the morning with scattered showers continuing 7, 8, 9 through the heart of the morning commute tomorrow. wind advisory is in effect. not for the entire bay area. the higher elevations are hills and also along the coastline. sustained winds to 30 miles per hour with higher gusts and in the mountains, a winter storm warning is in effect from tonight through saturday. the highest elevations may receive up to 4 feet of snowfall. it's going to come in waves. it's not going to be one big storm. we'll talk about the amounts later in the show. >>> the bay area big wave surf competition "titans of maverick

i'm da lin, kpix 5. >>> new at 6:00, fuming over federal raids. santa cruz police say they were tricked into helping out with early morning sweeps last week. kpix 5's len ramirez learned another local agency decided not to take part. >> reporter: it was one of the biggest law enforcement actions in santa cruz county in years, predawn raids by heavily armed security, ice and santa cruz police officers, but no sheriff's deputies. today, a spokesman confirmed the sheriff knew the operation was going on but decided not to be involved. >> we were completely comprised of everything that was potentially going to happen and did not feel comfortable with the information we had. >> reporter: santa cruz police regret their involvement, saying the feds lied to them that the raids only targeted violent gang members. >> we cannot tell you how disappointed we are by the betrayal of the department of homeland security. >> reporter: homeland security shot back, saying the chief targeted nationals who could be detained or arrested and called the statements false, r

len ramirez, kpix 5. >>> many are preparing to spend another night outside their homes. our team coverage continues can kit live at a flooded home. >> reporter: we are live here on 17th street, just south of santa clara street. in the past two hours we have seen coyotea creek actually drop-- coyote creek actually drop. a lot of evacuation order in vast majority area west of 101felt we followed some residents home where they came home to a muddy mess. the urge to go home is powerful, even though there might not be much of a home to go back to. we are in san jose's northern most flood zone at the south bay mobile home park, one of three mobile home parks next to each other on oakland road, all under mandatory evacuation order, that didn't stop raymond and his mom with matching glaugss to trudge through. why do you feel the need to go home ? >> we need clothes. >> reporter: 150 mobile homes surrounded by water, waist deep. they are elevated and that allowed some to come and go, including this woman, genevieve said it has been exhausting two days watching the flood waters. >

on highway 37, cate cauguiran, kpix 5 news. >>> a rare sight. the anderson reservoir is overflowing for the first time in 11 years. kpix 5's jackie ward has more on the rushing water getting a lot of attention. >> reporter: this is the talk of the town. and it's not hard to see why. people have been here gawking at it all day taking videos and pictures before it takes a turn for the worse. it is an incredible sight to see up close and personal. this outlet has been open for weeks and it was a bustling destination. at one point we couldn't find a spot to park in the parking lot. everyone waiting to see what happens. the anderson reservoir water level has surpassed capacity. six inches above the rim of the spillway. before even more storms are expected to bring a lot more water to this area. keeping this outlet open and pumping out 400 cubic feet of water per second is one of the only things they can do in an effort to keep the water level as low as possible. until the storm hits, the water district says there's not much that people who live in th

joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> all right. thank you. >>> new at 6:00 p.m. a mayor wants to put the breaks on a smart train extension. it is set to run from cloverdale to larksburg butt now there is a push to cut it short in san rafael. john ramos explains why. >> reporter: with the new line it will only go as far as san rafael even though voters approved it to go to the larksburg ferry. >> if they pay for it we should be able to go for it. >> reporter: just last year smart secured funding to construct new tracks to larksburg and service could begin next year. but recently the city of san rafael sent smart a letter. >> requesting that the extension be held. >> the mayor says smart plans to extend the two tracks through the current bus transit center. he says they will take up so much space that larger buses won't fit into -- won't fit into the facility anymore. >> they will have to occupy the streets. >> reporter: a new center will have to be built and that could take 5 years to construct. he is asking smart to postpone the plans till then. knowing that outs
