kpix 5's jackie ward confirmed fireworks did not start it. >> reporter: hours after san jose firefighters successfully put out a three-alarm fire, some remained on scene to monitor any hot spots. this is what's left of an abandoned dentist office after an early-morning fire that started at 2:20 and went to three alarms at 3 a.m. > 65 firefighters and command staff. we have no injuries. >> reporter: although this happened just hours after july 4 celebrations ended, san jose fire tells us fireworks did not cause this to happen. witnesses told them they saw homeless people running away from the burning building before firefighters showed up. >> thinks case, it's very common for boarded up facilities to become kind of de facto homeless encampments. so i hope that wasn't the case here. >> reporter: but it started inside. and there was a lot of toxic smoke firefighters had to battle through. >> it had fairly high contaminants in it so we evacuated the two structures to the back side of the building and sheltered in place other residents. >> reporter: the building on williams road has abandoned

kpix 5's jackie ward is live at the scene.reporter: michelle and anne, they just opened up this parking lot and as you can see, the fire destroyed what was an office building. it had been boarded up for quite some time. even hours after the fact and hours after crews had successfully put out the fire, they still remain here on scene just to make sure nothing flares back up. this all started around 2:20 this morning and quickly developed into a three-alarm fire. this two-story building on williams road is abandoned and boarded up. it used to be a dentist office. witnesses tell san jose fire that they think they saw homeless people fleeing from the building. >> but there were reports that there were homeless inside. so the fact that the building had no power and was boarded up it's likely it might have been something along those lines. >> reporter: san jose fire can confirm that fireworks did not cause this to happen. the fire started inside the building. an exact cause hasn't been determined. no injuries to report. that's the g
