hello, and welcome to kqed newsroom. tonight and next friday we will share with you the final two newscasts of kqed newsroom. for 55 years, kqed has cover the bay area's defining moments. we have hosted in-depth discussions with newsmakers including elected officials and politicians, artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs. our journalists have delivered important news from our times here in the bay area, across california and from the nation's capital but our television audiences changing and kqed has made the difficult decision to end this program. we are, however, going out with úa bang. starting with tonight's show and concluding with next friday night's finale, we are going on a retrospective journey of our television coverage from the 1960s to the present. tonight we will cover the first three decades of the show's history -- the 60s, 70s, and 80s. let's start with a newscast from our very first season of the show in 1968. this episode was born from a newspaper strike at the san frncisco chronicle. the reporters cou

i wanted to talk about some very good reporting from mission local, uh recently and then from kqed. which reported that the san francisco public library eureka valley harvey milk branch had cut off wifi after hours in an attempt to put put forward by the neighbors and their supervisor, ms mandal men. that this would presumably, uh basically discouraged or get rid of homeless in the neighborhood. 16 complaints. apparently um, it's unfortunate that when you fund as supervisors service, there's an expectation that it's following well in the case of the library, what it says it's going to do, which is their lovely slogan of free and equal access. well it's not free and equal access when only one branch is cutting off a service at the library has touted as valuable for everybody and certainly including homeless, although not just this cut off happened despite the libraries on study that there was no correlation between wifi and any kind of crime in the neighborhood causal relationship and that there were 526 unique users during their test period that we're using after hours wifi you're c
