kraig debro joins us with more on the project. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. work on this 170 million-dollar project started at 7:30 this morning. that's when crews shut down fifth avenue. take a look at those four metal beams on either side of fifth avenue. well, we were here this morning when crews moved them into p lace. according to a construction supervisor i spoke with, each of these things weighs 19 tons. each was moved in by a crane. this is called the fifth avenue retrofit project. it's one of eight up and down -- down 880. crews say this part will be done in 20 -- 2013. they will do this in three s tages of when the project is finished, it will like like your screen on the right. it will be up to 12 feet wider and seismically safer than the old road built after world war ii. crews have to do it in part in order to accommodate i-80 traffic. >> this is one of the most difficult projects i've been on. we have to build the bridge, demo the center out, move traffic over. we have to do it in stages.

kraig debro joins us now live with word that police are investigating this as a police murder suicide, craig. >> reporter: yeah, good afternoon, john. it is terrible what i just tried to say, this is being classified as a suspicious death, not a homicide. this home remains a crime scene. you can see that orange tag on the door. it says this is a crime scene still and then you can see that the black stuff on the door, that is the fingerprint dust. they have been dusting for prints here. now the victim's family members actually talked to neighbors about their grew some discovery. >> he said, no, he is not okay, and no, there is nothing that you can do for me. as well as she has been murdered, and i said i am really sorry. >> two bodies discovered at this livermore home. police say both of been shot. they are not calling it a homicide. a woman's sister and her friend had a date to have coffee. family members let themselves in through an open door. >> they walked inside coffee pot was on, everything was ready for them to like come over and have coffee and they just found them like grisly

ktvu's kraig debro joining us from the scene with more on who the police think is responsible. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. there's been some activity within the past hour. this happened at story road and hopkins behind me. there's a restaurant in the distance. the man's body found dead right in front of the restaurant. if you look here you can see the crime scene van is still here on the scene but investigators appear to be bundling up their equipment. it could be gone in about 20 minutes from now. the shooting happened at the sunset garden plaza on story road around 11:00 last night. police say it was a drive-by shooting. witnesses gave only a vague description of the vehicle but on the scene told me that the vehicle did not have a license plate. witnesses have been returning to the scene only because they've been at police headquarters all night long giving their statement. and a couple of those witnesses actually live in this area. so they're returning here so they can go home and get to sleep. the 20-year-old victim died on the scene. police aren't

kraig debro has more in this report. >> reporter: it all started around 8:15 last night. a san pablo officer signaled the driver after 1990 honda accord to stop. the honda pulled into a gas station just off the san pablo dam road exit. when the officer went to check the license of the driver, she and the man in the passenger seat got out of the car. the passenger began to run. the suspect ran around the back of the gas station with the officer in hot pursuit. now, either before or after this hedge right here, the officer tased the suspect. now, after jumping over this hedge, both men fell to the ground and over here is where the officer shot the suspect. police say the suspect stood up after the struggle. >> the struggle then reached for his handgun in the waistband and the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect. >> reporter: clack on the ground shows where the suspect fells. a neighbor says he heard about five shots. >> there were a few short pauses and then we heard a few more shortly after that. maybe two or three after that. >> reporter: police say the 33- ye

ktvu's kraig debro joins us now with the update. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. and i also talked to another business owner around here. he tells me it's not the first time they've had problems with that wire. more on that in a second. first the house behind me which is actually a marijuana dispensary business here on drake near downtown san jose what they've just done you can see on the ground there's a lot of foam there. what they're doing now is they're spraying water and foam on that house. the foam sits on top of the water so the water can really seep into the wood here. this is an old victorian. firefighter told me it's more difficult to make sure this house is out than the newer houses. newer houses have sheet rock. sheet rock gets wet and crumbles. they have actual redwood here and the ambers can get into the redwood. that's why all the attention. apparently this all started over here according to a witness with this line right here. this is 120 to 240-volt power line. the guy next door says h weapon up

let's go to kraig debro. he's there at the seen with more on who the police think is responsible. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. police are calling this a g ang- related drive-by shooting the i did speak to a man who identified himself as a friend of the victim. i want to show you the tau cau reyaw where this happened -- tacoria where this happened. this place is set to open -- right now, 8:00 a.m. this morning. let's see if we can get more information from some of the people who worked there, when it does open. police came out here around 11:00 last night on information there was a shooting here. when they got here and began investigating, they soon d eveloped information that this was a drive-by gang-related shooting. according to one witness, there was a vehicle seen leaving the area at the time of the s hooting. that vehicle -- they didn't have a description for it and that vehicle did not have license plates on the back. but in speaking to it gentlemen this morning about what h appened -- to this gentleman this morning about what h appened, he said one o

kraig debro joins us now with this live report. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the witness says he knows how it started and another business owner says this was preventable, first the house on drake street. you can see om of the debris out here. it took firefighter a long time to put all of this fire out. know, the witness says this -- now, the website says this power line, he heard it when it broke free, around 3:04 this morning. what he heard was a lot of h issing and this was not the closest fire station that came here. they don't have an engine. so the truck company that came from that station does not have water in the truck. so they had to wait for another station further away to get here before they started to put out the fire. >> when that truck did get here. it was about four or five m inutes later, according to a firefighter i spoke with, that could make all of the difference in a life-or-death situation. he says that four minutes in san jose is gambling. the reason they didn't have an engine there i

kraig debro has more. >> reporter: i did a little research to find out what he said before he took the job. before i get to that, i want to tell you about an oakland officer who didn't have any idea this was going on. he said he couldn't believe it. the chief's chair is barely r oom. during research i was doing, here's a quote from the chief. it says, basically, "i've always taken the jobs nobody wanted hopefully this challenge isn't too overwhelming." opd confirms he's a finalist for the chief's job in san jose, three of the finalists there. now that he's applied for another job, does that mean that batts thinks the job in oakland is too overwhelming? reports of many violent crimes across oakland have decreased dramatically. now, oakland fired batts to replace wade tucker. walker-- tucker resigned from his job in 2009. a month before that, tuck told the council he had lost faith in them and accused the body of p aying lip service to necessary reforms. we don't have any idea why the chief is considering this idea. the city of san jose probably won't decide until next month on who their

kraig debro is live now with details on what happened. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. crime scene investigators are on scene here at the sunset gardens plaza. you can see the crime scene van is on the scene here. police have cornered off this whole parking lot here while they investigate. this all happened around 11:00 last night. police got a call here of a shooting. the shooting appears to have happened in front of a store. the 20-year-old victim they found in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and dead on the scene. police say that witnesses told them that a car sped off right after the shooting. they didn't tell me if they had a description of the car or license plate number. but a car did speed off. they think it was a drive-by shooting. the last thing they said about this shooting is they think it is gang-related. we have to ask police why they think that is, what evidence they have to suggest that. that's what we're going to be doing. hopefully we'll have that for you in my next report. liv

morning, there is some road closures that are about to happen in about an hour and a half ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from oakland. he knows what areas you drivers may want to avoid. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. fifth avenue specifically in oakland we're at fifth avenue right now and over the i-80 overpass here. traffic on i-80 probably going to be a little slow here. cal trans is advising drivers to take an alternative route. i'll have more information on that in a second. take a look at the overpass now. the reason behind the construction here size of retrofit project crews are going to work on the overpass and that is why they need to close fifth avenue. the total cost of this fifth avenue construction project is about $170 million. now in addition to the seismic improvements, the new structure once they get it in is going to be 46 feet wider than what it is now and they're going to have 10 to 12-foot shoulders and a southbound auxiliary lane that will make it easier to merge onto i-880 from fifth street onramp. in addition it's also going to provide construction c

ktvu's kraig debro is in mountain view this morning with the details. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, pam. i'm at the creekside apartments not too far from the cal train station. they found the bedbugs just down the driveway there. not a lot of apartments are effected by this but i talked to a lot of people who live here this morning and very few of the people i spoke to even knew there was a problem. the problem exists in two apartments down the way. now the apartment complex here is located in building 70 actually. one of many apartment complexes here. apartment managers brought in dogs to sniff surrounding apartments for the bedbugs. and no bedbugs were found in any other neighboring apartments according to the management here. but according to some people who had heard about it the news is kind of freaking them out. two apartments as i said. but bedbugs are being found all over the country. they basically go from place to place by hitching a ride on people or animals jumping on and off victims to infest new places and they're found in hotels

reporting live in san pablo kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 5:34. investigators are analyzing new information recovered from that storage facility. five pipe bombs were found. investigators say they were originally there for a drug raid at one of the units rented by an unidentified woman. that all changed once they began their search. >> when we began a search of the storage unit based on her consent. we opened it up and found the pipe bombs. after that it was stopped for safety. >> the bomb squad was pulled in. four pipe bombs were detonated there at the scene. they closed traffic on 680 during the evening commute to protect drivers. the woman who rented the unit she was taken into custody. >>> investigators are trying to determine the cause of a deadly gas pipeline explosion. it was a horrible scene that brought back memories from the deadly blast in san bruno. the powerful explosion sent a 50-foot fire ball in the air and could be felt miles away. >>> meantime there is a new development in the pipeline explosion in san bruno. pg&e faces a march 1

kraig debro has more. >> reporter: good morning, pam. they believe there could be more victims. police have not issued a lot of information about that. they have issued a community alert for people in this area. that is because on tuesday night a woman was robbed and sexually assaulted. she was targeted and on her way home at the time. they did not release the name of the street. in september of last year two women around the lake merit area were also robbed and sexually assaulted. police believe those crimes were connected because the met of operation was similar and e guy graphical area was -- geographical area was similar. they will be calling police to see if they will release the name of the streets so we know exactly where it happened and if the crimes of september are relathed to the crimes that happened -- are related to the crimes that happened on tuesday night. >>> a police search continues for a burglar. this happened on mettle dale road. police say the women all in their 70s interrupted the intruder when they returned. they didn't find a suspect but the victims are s

(415)575-5544. that is a unanimous tip hotline. this is no permanent store front sign in front of it. there is a sign hanging above it that this store sells discounted perfume. police swarmed the store with a garage type door front as they investigated what happened inside. the shooting happened at the shop late last night. we don't know if the store was open when the suspect opened fire but we can tell you that this small store is located at 269 jefferson street in the heart of fisherman wharf. two store employees were shot dead. san francisco police could not give us any details on how they were arrested. they did arrest one man after the sho
