and charles krauthammer on whether there are any true conservatives running for president? caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone. but first an election update with bet baier in washington. we'll be back in 60 seconds. captions by closed captioning services >> bret: thanks very much. voters minnesota and colorado voting. first step in awarding delegates to the national convention, not the last. delegates are not locked in tonight. polls have just closed in missouri where it's a beauty contest primary. essentially a statewide straw poll. the votes cast there won't count for awarding delegates to the national convention. they will do that later. newt gingrich is not on the ballot in missouri. minnesota caucuses convened just a few moments ago. the north star state has 40 delegates. 37 are at stake. romney won this contest in 2008. colorado caucuses begin in about an hour at 9:00 eastern. colorado has 36 delegates with 33 up for grabs in its caucuses. romney won in colorado four years ago with 60% of the vote. we have a one hour recap at 11:00 p.m. eastern. stay tune

syndicated columnist, charles krauthammer.kay, bill, what about the president's pitch and explanation and how it plays? >> i kept looking for the speech for the most notable policy initiative of the administration, which was cap and trade. remember that? the democratic congress, the house passed the bill. that was the centerpiece of the legislative agenda? what happened to that? he doesn't mention it. he is adjusting politically, and i give him credit for that, i suppose, as a political matter. he is a flexible president. now he is very concerned about rising gas prices. he is for subsidizing the solar energy policies -- companies. >> bret: chuck, the only republican speaking out about this today was former house speaker newt gingrich on the trail talking energy. take a listen. >> we had a petition drive in 2008 called drill here, drill now, pay less. i think the american people as they look at gasoline rising and rising and rising, are going to realize what we need to do is change in a dramatic way. this is a radical left win

krauthammer mentioned that santorum had not been in the food fight. he has not had a win since iowa. i suspect he'll get in the food fight. i suspect it again but the speaker has a good record to run on. as the old saying goes, they can lie louder but we can tell the truth longer. i think he'll continue to do that. we're ready for the balance of the battle. >> sean: what about the carpet bombing issue. it's been pretty contentious down there. at moments you are wondering if we're going to put somebody in and put everybody in neutral corners for a while? >> you don't like to see that. again, i think we saw in iowa that works when newt had about 50% of the negative ads running against him. we saw it in south carolina but we had very good ground game. we saw it again in florida. so he is kind of the focus of these attacks. again, i recite what my dad used to say is, dogs don't bark at parked cars. the speaker is a threat and speaker to santorum and has been to governor romney. he will continue to be under attack. i think he has a balanced budget entitlem

reaction, joining us from washington fox news political analyst charles krauthammer. beefs with the memo, charles? >> yeah. i got a big one. you saying, you are talking about presidential leadership on gas prices. i went back and looked what you said the night before about what the president ought to do. as i understand it, you are saying that the president acting on behalf of we the people should be telling the oil companies that you can't sell to china, you have to keep the oil here so you lower the price. now, the logic as you explained it is we the people own the land, so we the people, the president acting on behalf of the people who own the land have the right to bring in the head of the oil companies and tell them what to sell at. now, bill, let's say you went ahead and you want an apartment building in manhattan, and rent started to go high because of housing shortage, you are saying that the president of the government acting on behalf of we the people who as you say own the land, own america, can walk into your office and say you are going to lower the price
