kris sanchez joins us with more on this idea. kris, i would imagine a mountain of opposition. how realistic is this proposal? >> reporter: well, you can always make a law requiring people to do just about anything. that doesn't mean that they are going to comply. a lot of people feel very strongly that this law, state law, would put them at odds with the federal law and compromise their privacy and their medical history. counting all the different kinds of medicinal marijuana might be an easier job than counting the number of medical marijuana patients. when voters made medical marijuana legal in this state, they made registering with the state optional, and so fewer than 10,000 people have. this is one of the patients who have not. >> it's just not something that's required, not necessary, so i haven't done it. >> an assemblywoman would like to change that. she is proposing a bill that would require patients to register with the state and anyone who wants to cultivate marijuana not only register but also file their addresses and where they plan to grow as well. doug, of medma

kris sanchez introduces us to the refugee family. kris?is family is desperate to start their new life in santa clara but considering the difficulty of finding a place to rent, to live with little credit history, no job, and what seems like no one but each other. as the final troops rolled out of iraq in august of 2010, many iraqis were trying desperately to come to the united states as well, some with special reasons to fear deadly violence. >> i worked with the american forces so i would be in danger, you know, the situation in iraq, all the violence and militia. what's going on in iraq. i would be like a target. >> reporter: she arrived in december of 2008 as a refugee with nothing. in three years since she put her american life on hold to go back to iraq to bring her children here. now the three are staying in a santa clara hotel room waiting for their new lives to begin. >> if i want to rent an apartment, they want to see check stubs. and being unemployed right now, this is going to be like almost impossible to find an apartment. >> re

kris sanchez joins us now. what's the plan? >> reporter: well, raj, chances are if you drive highway 17 you probably white knuckle it around laurel curve because it is a very smooth stretch of road and it's tempting to go a little too fast. it's downhill and there's no guardrail separating you from oncoming traffic. some of those things are going to change this week. on any given day as many as 65,000 drivers pass laurel road on highway 17, some of them don't make it past this curve. just friday a 54-year-old man from brentwood died here when he lost control in the rain and smashed into a driver going in the opposite direction. california highway patrol officer sarah jackson drove us along that route. >> where they would normally hit the center divide they're coming through and having head-on collisions with northbound traffic. >> reporter: laurel curve accounts for one in three crashes on highway 17. they have resisted calls for a guardrail here citing access to laurel road which may not serve the greater good. in a mile and a
