>> good morning, kris and marcus. that's exactly right as you can imagine, muni like many other transportation services really looking to get back on track after the pandemic. advocates living here in the city are doing something pretty unique. they're making it a transit month and as you can guess, all month long there will be special transit-related events happening, including today's ride along as well as a rally. that event gets started at 8:00 this morning when mayor london breed and supervisors will do special ride along to city hall taking some of muni's busiest lines. that includes the cable cars which began running again. the busy 38 gary line and the light rail and the cross town 49 vinness as the agency tries to rebound from what's been a year and a half of extremely limited ridership. now, muni does not reveal specific numbers, but we do know revenues dipped to their lowest levels last april when it was down 88%. this past june revenues were still only about 20% of where they are prepandemic 2019. the bart

>> yeah, good morning to you, marcus and kris. chp tells us several people were transferred to hospital with possible bullet wounds. their condition unknown. this happened behind me here on southbound 280 in daly city. this happened on the freeway just after the eastmore exit. the call came in after 1:30s this morning about an older model gold colored gmc suv. you can see it in the video. that crashed into the side wall off the freeway. you can see the back window and one of the side windows were blown out either by the gunfire or from the collision. not clear. everyone in the suv as i mentioned was injured and taken to the hospital. chp officers with flashlights seen searching the freeway possibly for bullet casings. we believe the shooter was the a separate vehicle and got away. no vehicle description. chp is investigating. the freeway was shut down for some time but has since reopened. for more on the traffic to our traffic anchor mike. >> you gave the important information for the drive. thanks for setting the screen. southbou

i am kris sanchez. >> i am scott mcgrew. marcus and laura both have the day off today. first, this half hour, we are tracking something potentially disturbing. lightning possibly in the bay area. kari, we did not need this. this is going to be a chance for more fire. >> yeah, and this is coming on that one-year anniversary of us dealing with the orange skies we had last year that were triggered by all of the lightning storms that we had in august. taking a look at what is going on for now, the national weather service put up the fire weather watch in yellow, and that includes a big chunk of the bay area and that's because we are seeing thunderstorms moving through and the rain drying up so there could be dry lightning and a risk of that could create locally gusty winds into friday morning, and the fuels, the vegetation is extremely dry. what is happening here, we have a couple systems moving our way, one coming in from the north that will provide energy, and one from the south providing moisture. these two systems on a colli

. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura has the day off. we begin with the desperate battle that firefighters are waging in south lake tahoe to try to save homes as that caldor fire moves in. >> we sent "today in the bay's" bob redell to the caldor fire and, bob, i know we've talked about a lot of people exiting that area. how was drive up there? >> highway 50 once you got into the fire zone extremely smoky to the point where you had to really slow down and look for the lanes in the road. we found an area here on echo summit along highway 50 where we have some clear air and you can see the fire burning behind me. unfortunately the conditions for today are not good for the fire fight. there is a red flag warning in effect until 11:00 tonight which means the conditions are right for extreme fire behavior, and the fact that it also means that humidity levels are low and the fuels are extremely try and the winds will be gusty, forecast to be as high as 50 miles per hour. as the caldor fire spreads, authorities have issued evacuation orders for

i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm scott mcgrew. in for laura and marcus. our big story, the fire and weather. we've been watching live cameras across the bay area and i know we've been hoping to see a strike live, but we have not so far been quite successful. >> did see one on my drive in. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm cells and has been watching those lightning strikes on the computer model. so as we take a look at storm ranger our mobile doppler radar that gives us a good look at what is going on around the bay area, so all of the chances of lightning we've seen from the overnight hours is really starting to go down and we haven't seen any lightning strikes over the past hour or so. as we get a look at storm ranger, it is showing all of the activity we've had. i want to loop it going back about 12 hours because it was so busy at one point at about 2:00 to 3:00 in the morning

>> good morning, kris. i can tell you we are still very much in the midst of a pandemic, and taking a look at the data, at least here in san francisco, there were several consecutive days of falling numbers in terms of folks being hospitalized for the covid-19 virus. take a look at your screen. we have this laid out in a graphic for you. by the end of august, the beginning of september, that's the latest that data was available, the total number of folks hospitalized with covid in san francisco fell steadily from 110 individuals to 89. according to "the chronicle," the bay area reported on average 16 cases per day per 100,000 residents in the seven days ending on tuesday, and that compared with about 24 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago, and you can see numbers related to covid cases have decreased and some local health leaders are considering softening the mask mandate, and that would likely be tied to vaccination status, as we know that full approval of the pfizer vaccine was significant for many offices. r

kris sanchez joins us live with how soon that vaccine could be available. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. for a lot of parents with kids that are in that elementary school age group, it just cannot happen soon enough because covid cases have been going up as the kids have gone back to school in person with no vaccine protection, just the protection afforded by masks, social distancing and having the adults in their lives vaccinated. pfizer announced this morning that its data for trials in children 5 to 11 show that the vaccine is safe and produces strong immune response in the 2,000 children in the trial. the dose for children this age is about a third of what children 12 and up are getting. they submitted the status. by the end of september. it hopes of getting approval or authorization soon after. a pfizer senior vice president explained that the efficacy data is still coming, but for now the fda will consider that antibody response. >> the level of antibody the vaccine is generating in children 5 to 11 matches the level of antibody that we know provides protection for individuals 16
