today in the bay's kris sanchez is live this morning. kris, i understand you. you've learned some information. yes, we did get a late night update from oakland police. we know that the two people who were shot and sent to the hospital, they are in stable condition. but as you mentioned, there are several people detained. we just don't know who they are and what the motivation for the shooting might have been overnight. oakland police did give us a few a bit more information, saying that the shooting happened inside the school in the north part of the school, and appeared to have started with some sort of dispute. now, while the victims are said to be adults, we have not been able to clarify whether they were young adults and whether they were students. last night, witnesses told us there were people running in all directions once that gunfire happened, oakland police did have help setting up a perimeter and helping the crowd get away from the area from the chp, so no one was injured trying to leave. now, a graduate told us that it happened right after the cerem

kris sanchez joining us live from berkeley this morning. and kris, this was a pretty tense ending. it was a very tense ending. it is very quiet now, but there is a large security presence. they are stationed all about the building here that is behind me. i want to show you what it was like last night as it was all unfolding just hours after, within 24 hours of those protesters taking over that abandoned building owned by uc berkeley, berkeley police and other agencies shut down the streets nearby in order to move in and arrest 12 protesters. those protesters now face charges of trespassing, vandalism and destruction of property, according to the university. it does not appear they are affiliated with the on campus protest, which disbanded a few days ago after the student protesters and uc berkeley officials reached an agreement. we talked with the berkeley man who lives nearby, who says he doesn't think that this is over. i think people are just the pro-palestinian protesters are just fed up at this point after for that many months. so they really want to just go all out. so it's j

kris sanchez, nbc, bay area news. all right, chris, thank you. well, turning now to new developments in san jose, a shooting that shut down a freeway off ramp has turned deadly. this happened thursday at 280 and mclaughlin avenue. this is near the 2.8 101 interchange. while the investigation has led to the shutdown of that area for several hours, police now confirming one man was taken to the hospital and investigators say they learned he died sunday. anyone with any information is asked to call police. this is san jose's 13th homicide this year. well. former president. hush money trial continues in new york. and his former so-called fixer back on the witness stand, michael cohen, the former longtime lawyer for mr. trump, claims that he was directed to pay star stormy daniels to hide an alleged affair she had with trump. but mr. trump is charged with faking business records to hide payments so it wouldn't hurt the 2016 presidential campaign. now today, cohen spoke on his 13 month prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to federal tax crimes in 20

nbc bay area's kris sanchez shows us the tents, ending with law enforcement at miramar park. all quiet now here at this property, which is owned by uc berkeley, you can see some of the graffiti remaining, and there is a heavy security presence to make sure that protesters don't come back within 24 hours of taking over the abandoned building owned by uc berkeley, berkeley police and other agencies shut down the streets nearby and moved in to arrest those 12 protester. they now face charges, including burglary, vandalism and conspiracy. berkeley police say they violently resisted arrest, hitting officers with crowbars in the head. the officers were wearing helmets and were uninjured, according to the university. only one of the 12 is a student. the arrests come just days after the on campus tent protest disbanded after the student protesters and uc berkeley officials reached an agreement. we talked with a berkeley man who lives nearby who thinks this is not over yet. i think people are just the pro-palestinian protesters are just fed up at this point after for that many months.

kris van cleave, thank you.l, now to some breaking news with a new round of severe weather hammering the heartland. at this hour, there have been reports of dozens of tornadoes across iowa, with several states under tornado watches through the night. cbs's roxana saberi is in davenport, iowa, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, a dangerous tornado outbreak in iowa, with at least a dozen reports of twisters so far today. this video was captured by a tornado chaser in adams county, iowa, about 100 miles southwest of des moines. you can see a home ripped to shreds, debris swirling, and the devastating aftermath. the tornado took down several wind turbines, setting off a massive fire, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. forecasters are predicting many more tornadoes will hit the midwest tonight, including after dark, the most dangerous time, when people are asleep and may not hear warnings. and you can see the wind is picking up here in davenport, iowa. the storms are heading straight toward us. some moving

kris. all right. thank you so much, ginger. so as that hearing happens on capitol hill, less than three miles away at george washington university, a pro-palestine encampment is now gone from campus early this morning, at least two police officers used pepper spray, and others were arresting at least three dozen protesters. some of the protesters who were not arrested gathered outside the police department to demand the release of the detained people. a protesters at uc berkeley and stanford continue to decry israel's new incursion in rafah, calling for their school's divestment from israel. hundreds of people rallied at cal's sproul plaza and at stanford. palestinian supporters held what they called an all out for rafah rally. new at 11 here at home, a disturbing case on the peninsula . a redwood city paramedic is now charged with assaulting an elderly woman in the back of an ambulance. two years ago, the san mateo county district attorney's office says 35 year old miguel ontiveros was on duty with a partner in december 2022.
