nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us now. and, kris, have we heard anything from the mayor herself? no, we have been asking since last night for a comment from mayor sheng thao. her office did elected us to campaign staff, but as of 11 this morning, backers of the recall effort rather her staff has not responded. now this at 11:00 is where the backers gathered at frank ogawa plaza. this is a live look at the press conference that they called shortly after learning that their signature gathering effort was successful, the group called oakland united to recall sheng thao oust for short, got notice from the city of oakland that the signatures they gathered were more than enough to qualify for the recall for the november election. the requirement was nearly 25,000 signatures. recall supporters gathered more than 40,000. we talked with people on both sides who mentioned the impact on public trust system. all eyes to city. we trust it. leronne armstrong. we don't trust mayor tom. it's made you know, people question why vote right.

i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we begin with that developing story and the confirmation of the death of a young oakland firefighter paramedic who drowned this morning in southern california. nbc bay area's bob redell. he's live from west oakland. this is where his colleagues have been fighting that warehouse fire throughout the night. and bob, we now know who that young man is. reporter. good morning to you, marcus and chris. i spoke with a captain and two battalion chiefs on the scene of this unrelated fire here in west oakland. they were clearly distraught and did not want to talk about caden lofgren, seen here in a photo tweeted out by the fire department. this was tweeted out back in 2021 to announce his promotion. back then to firefighter paramedic. his father was assistant fire chief shane lofton, who tragically collapsed and died on the job the year before. in 2020, while caden was still a probationary firefighter. sadly, this morning we've learned that caden is gone now two. this is video from san diego ove

kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. want to continue to follow. thank you, kris, for the latest developing right now overnight drama playing out on one southern california college campus. the president of cal state los angeles is among those sheltering in her office after pro-palestine protesters took over one of the main buildings. here's some new video overnight showing the outside of the student services building. up to 100 protesters set up barricades about 12 hours ago. the school last night issued a shelter in place. a handful of school employees are said to be inside, and some are trying to help resolve the conflict. the school says the protest is unauthorize and so far police are taking a hands off approach. we're taking a live look in washington dc this morning. we're later today, former president donald trump will return to capitol hill. now this will actually be his first time back since the january 6th riots. trump is set to visit the house and senate campaign headquarters that is near the us capitol, where he'll deliver remarks. now,

today, in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with the emotional conversation that's expected. kris ginger, you have school aged kids and it is really tough when you are attached to your school and things change like that. a lot of districts are facing the same issue, which is declining enrollment, and fewer students mean fewer dollars dollars to keep those schools open. let's start there. san francisco unified has 4000 fewer students since the 2017 2018 school year. so about six years ago, san francisco unified projects, it will have 4300 fewer students by the year 2032. that's the reason for what the district is calling its resource alignment initiative out today. the superintendent will update the board and the public on the conversations that they've had and discuss the criteria for determining which schools are most viable, and then they will weigh or what weight each criteria should have. here is some of what they will consider under the equity category access to schools and programs and the school's historical challenge. they'll also consider academic performance. each s

let's go to today in the bay kris sanchez. she's live for us this morning over at the san jose police department. and chris, i understand the chief has an important message for those who are attending those sideshows. well, hi there, marcus and scott. so the chief says they are using all available resources to track down the people who are responsible for this. now, this was a video circulating on social media of the sideshow that happened just before 7:00 on saturday night near santana row. the car at the center is the san jose police cruiser with a reserve officer inside. the officer was flagged down by people who witnessed a bystander injured in that sideshow. we talked with a legal analyst who says the culprits really face serious charges from felony assault on a police officer to felony vandalism, acting san jose police chief paul joseph issued a statement saying he will work with the district attorney to ensure that once arrested, the suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. the chief is not the only one
